Trump handpicked the board of the center and is himself chairman. After the announcement, members of the Kennedy family fired back. Maria Shriver, who's the niece of John F. Kennedy, wrote, "It's beyond wild that he would think adding his name in front of President Kennedy's name is acceptable. It is not." House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the board has no authority to rename the center without legislative action.

Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts" on the building's facade on Friday. The move prompted outrage from Democrats and members of the Kennedy family. Congress approved plans to establish the cultural center in 1958, but the institution didn't open until 1971. Any name change would appear to require an act of Congress.
