When David Cronenberg's "The Fly" (1986) was released, Jeff Goldblum wrote a letter to Vincent Price saying, "I hope you like it as much as I liked yours [The Fly (1958)]." Vincent Price thought it was terribly sweet. Price hadn't met Goldblum, but he wrote him back and went...

Vincent Price on "The Abominable Dr. Phibes" (1971): "This was a mock-horror movie, and some say it was ridiculous when I had to speak out of an electric socket in my neck. But the public loved the film. I don't mind making these funny horror films at all. I find almost anything funny, and myself funniest of all. I don't mean that I'm a comedian, but I find that the minute that I take myself seriously, I've got to laugh because it's so ridiculous. It's what gets me through an awful lot of films, this sense of the ridiculous. Phibes was something that I had to take very seriously when I was doing it so that it would come out funny. All the same, it was agony for me because my face was covered with plastic, and I giggled and laughed the whole time, day and night. The makeup man and I became very good friends, because the makeup kept dissolving and he had to patch me up every five minutes." According to Richard Fleischer, Howard Hughes saw "The Narrow Margin" (1952) several times and it was his favourite picture. He was so impressed with the film that he didn't want to change anything in the movie but he wanted it to be entirely shot again with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell as the leads. Fleischer didn't know whether to laugh or cry when he heard about the plan. He was concerned that Hughes would get someone else to direct the movie. If it happened, he thought, "Instead of being the tightly wrought gem of a film noir we all believed it to be, it would now become—well, something else". But thankfully, Hughes plan didn't materialise. But it resulted in the film being released two years after it was completed. It became the the highest grossing movie for that year for RKO. P.S: On this day, 74 years ago, "The Narrow Margin" (1952) premiered in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

Denis Villeneuve met Roger Deakins for the first time at the Academy Awards when he was nominated for "Incendies" (2010) & Roger Deakins for "True Grit" (2010). Deakins told Villeneuve that he loved "Incendies". Because of that, Deakins saw the older movies of Villeneuve. When Deakins was looking for a movie to work in, he got the script of "Prisoners" (2013) & had heard that Villeneuve was going to direct it. So, he immediately decided to work in the movie. Villeneuve said, "Deakins was looking for something to do and he said that when he read “Prisoners” he said, “I want to work with that director,” which is honestly the biggest compliment I’ve ever received. It was a dream for me to work with such a master. I never thought in my life or dared to dream that I’d make a movie with Roger Deakins one day. I think he was available at that period of time and he loved the script and he loved “Incendies” and we met and that was it. It was a very beautiful cinematic experience for me–I learned so much." Deakins wasn't very much a fan of the gothic elements in the movie and the genre, but he loved the script for its emphasis on character and performance. He felt that the dramatic success of "Prisoners" rests on the acting. Deakins said, "I heard Denis was doing this movie and got the script, which was dense and had a lot of characters, and, to be honest, Gothic elements that I thought went too far. I wasn’t interested in that genre, but it turned out that Denis wasn’t, either. We did end up shooting the script, but it was always his intention that the final cut of the film wouldn’t feature those elements.” P.S: On this day, 13 years ago, "Prisoners" (2013) premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, USA.

Tobe Hooper asked Kit Carson to write the screenplay for the "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" (1986) with an emphasis on dark comedy, an element Hooper felt was present in the first film but went unacknowledged by audiences and critics. Hooper said, "I’ll be honest: I feel that "TCM 2" came out of my frustration at the comedy in the first film not being appreciated or understood. And so I amplified the comedic aspects of it, but at the same time [effects master] Tom Savini made everything so anatomically correct and cost so much, that, you know, the film ended up not even getting a rating. I like the film as this wacky, crazy, bizarre, over-the-top dark comedy, but it missed its mark in doing what the audience expected it to do, which was to scare the hell out of them and give them a little more of what they had experienced in the first film." "It was a comedy that couldn’t get an MPAA rating, so they went out with it anyway, unrated. They couldn’t advertise. And the audience at the time didn’t want that kind of film. The core audience of the film was pissed off, because what they wanted to see was more of the same. But as with a lot of my pictures I made something that was actually appreciated 10 or 15 years later. It has a lot of fans now. Looking back, it’s one of those strange films, where you wonder how it ever got made. You don’t know why it exists, like 'Showgirls' (1995) , which I liked a lot. Taking chances is cool, but it may not be smart. Those were cool times. Life was cool. What can I say?" On this day, 46 years ago, Dario Argento's "Inferno" (1980) was released in Italy. After completing filming, Dario Argento screened "Inferno" (1980) to [then] President of 20th Century Fox, Sherry Lansing. While watching the film with him, she grabbed Argento's arm and hung on tightly during every shocking/scary scene in the movie. Argento thought it was a good sign for the movie. When the film was over, she said to Argento that the movie was "too strong" for the American market. The movie did reasonably well all over the world, but was released only on VHS in the USA. It wasn't released in theaters. Argento was upset by this as it was an important film, which he held close to his heart. ('Dario's 'Inferno' - making the second mother)

On this day, 39 years ago, Richard Donner's "Lethal Weapon" (1987) was released in the USA & Canada. Roger Ebert played a huge role in the film's success. When he and Gene Siskel reviewed it on their TV show, Ebert raved about it, said the film "thrilled me from beginning to end" and said it was both a great action film and a well-written drama. He later gave it 4 stars in a written review as well. Fans who had not been that aware of the film (which was released to limited fanfare and ad space in the doldrums of the Spring 1987 release period) went to see it after Ebert's rave and soon widely agreed with him on its quality. Prior to the release of "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" (1977), George Lucas screened a rough cut of the movie which was "mostly filled with stock footage of old war movies, and all kinds of stuff" to some of his friends in the film industry. Most of them thought it was a disaster. Brian De Palma was especially sarcastic in a good-natured way, teasing Lucas about the “almighty Force” and indicating that the rough cut version of the film was one of the "worst things" he had ever seen. Even Lucas thought the film was not going to be successful. He said, “I figured, well, it’s just a silly movie. It ain’t going to work.”" But Steven Spielberg was among the two who thought otherwise. He said, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie of all time’. Everybody in the room looked up at him and said, ‘Poor Steven.'” Jay cocks was the other one who praised the movie. However, Lucas' filmmaker friends helped him fix up "Star Wars" even though "they didn't have any faith in it." When Michael Mann asked William Friedkin to play Hannibal Lecter in "Manhunter" (1986), Friedkin thought that Mann was joking. “I thought he was putting me on. I said, ‘You see me as Hannibal Lecter?’ Mann said, ‘I see you exactly as Hannibal Lecter. You don’t appear to be psychotic, but you are.’” Even though Brian Cox's performance in the movie is extraordinary, I would have personally given anything to see Friedkin as Hannibal Lecter. Christopher Nolan revealed that the final shot of The Dark Knight was accidental. “I didn’t know how to end the film visually. A stuntman went up a ramp, a movie light shone down, and we cut to black from the light. It was unusual, but it felt right.”

When "Silent Night, Deadly Night" (1984) was released in the USA, angered parents who were not happy to see Santa Claus depicted as an ax murderer, picketed theaters where the movie was screened and asked oncoming patrons to sign petitions to have the film removed from theaters. A group was formed to protest the film and lobby for it to be removed from theaters was called "Citizens Against Movie Madness". Two weeks later, the film was withdrawn. Even though executives at the studio stayed away from the media when the controversy erupted, writer Michael Hickey said he accepted any request for an interview he got, including Entertainment Tonight. He thought the controversy was absolutely hilarious and a lot of fun. He said, "I was in no way chagrined by the controversy, I thought it was great! This is a film that could have sunk like a stone and never been heard from again, and suddenly it was leading the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. I didn't know how to take that!" (Source: IMDb)

Francis Ford Coppola on how young children convinced him to make 'The Outsiders' (1983) & the reason why he loves the movie: "Interviewer: 'Rumble Fish' (1983) is so completely different a film from 'The Outsiders' (1983), not just in black and white and color, but in the tone. And everybody said, “Well, he’s off in Tulsa, making two films,” rather in a way that, once, people would go up to the desert and make two westerns at the same time. 'Rumble Fish' makes 'The Outsiders' seem an odder film than I thought it was when I first saw it. 'The Outsiders' almost felt like a film in which you weren't quite there all the time. Coppola: No, I don’t think so. 'The Outsiders' (1984) was the type of film that I personally liked, a melodrama with a romantic tone. I liked the book a lot when I read it; I thought it was sweet and youthful and had something in its little, simple theme that was of value, and I wanted to make the picture very much as the book was. Maybe that’s what you're interpreting as my not always being there, except that I did make the decision to make it exactly like the book. The key to 'The Outsiders' is the score; the fact that it’s this schmaltzy classical movie score indicates that I wanted a movie told in sumptuous terms, very honestly or carefully taken from the book without changing it a lot, with young actors—putting the emphasis more on that kind of 'Gone with the Wind' (1939) lyricism which was so important to the young girl [Susie Hinton] when she wrote it. I liked the film on that basis. It’s how I made it and why I made it. But if you think about my career, I’ve never made two films that were alike... maybe the two Godfathers. But every one of my films is very different from one another and I was feeling that I was in kind of a journeyman period of my life, approaching a future style of work as a more serious, older man which would be based on a tremendous amount of exploration while I had the chance to do that. To me it’s nothing to say, well, I’m going to make that film and it’s going to be that kind of film. Like 'The Outsiders'—it’s not that I couldn’t make that sixteen other ways. People suggested, “Well, are we really going to make this book like that?” “Well,” I said, “little kids wrote me a letter and wanted me to make it that way.” Of all the letters I get from movies, 'The Outsiders' is the one where all of these cute little fourteen- year-olds . . . so I’m in it for them. I feel I must have gained something, although it wasn’t as challenging, cinematically or even on the level of acting and other things as, say, the one that came afterwards. But I always had this idea that I wanted to make one film that was romantic and schmaltzy, like 'The Godfather' (1972), and one film that was more of an art film, more in the direction of 'Apocalypse Now' (1979)." This gentleman saw a trailer for sale on a popular social media marketplace. He felt the price was fair. After reaching out to the seller he agreed to purchase it for $1100 which was the asking price. During the meet up, the seller appeared to be on the phone the whole time, he’s now claiming another buyer is offering $1200 for it. Even though the seller already agreed to sell it to him for $1100, he is now saying he had also agreed to meet up with another potential buyer who offered him $1200 for it. The gentleman declines to agree to that price because it’s not the price he agreed on initially. Later on the seller messages him again talking about the other buyer backed out and he is now willing to sell it for the original price of $1100. Was there really another buyer, or at this point was he using a dirty tactic to get the buyer to agree to a higher price, should he renegotiate a lower price to make up for the inconvenience during the first meet up?

John Carpenter on how the studio, audience and critics reacted after watching "Big Trouble in Little China" (1986) & the reason for movie's failure: "Carpenter: I thought about writing a book about my experiences in Hollywood being a director, mainly because I was burned out on making movies. But | didn't do it because | thought, “I’m not ready yet. | don't have enough to say yet. I need to make more films and | don’t want to quit yet.” Interviewer: How did Fox executives react when they saw the movie for the first time? Carpenter: Needless to say, they had a few problems with the movie. They sat down with me and we went through the film. They didn’t like that the white hero was such a buffoon, and that he was being shown up by the Asians. They were afraid the audience wouldn't think this guy was brave, so they asked me to cut out the humor and emphasize his bravery, which was impossible to do. Then we got to the preview stage. The audience that saw it really loved it and laughed, so they wanted me to put the humor back in and go back to what it was—they still hated the movie, though. They didn't want Kurt to play it plenty. They wanted him to be an action hero, a real live action hero, not Jack Burton. They wanted him to be more like Rambo or Stallone. They wanted him to play it straight and it wasn't straight. Interviewer: How was the movie perceived by the audience and the critics? Carpenter: Nobody got it. Like I said earlier, timing was never my thing in terms of when my movies come out. This movie was completely and totally misunderstood. The critics and the public thought it was just bad, and there is nothing | can do about that." John Carpenter on how the studio, audience and critics reacted after watching "Big Trouble in Little China" (1986) & the reason for movie's failure: "Carpenter: I thought about writing a book about my experiences in Hollywood being a director, mainly because I was burned out on making movies. But | didn't do it because | thought, “I’m not ready yet. | don't have enough to say yet. I need to make more films and | don’t want to quit yet.” Interviewer: How did Fox executives react when they saw the movie for the first time? Immediately after the production of Jean-Luc Godard's 'Breathless' (1960), Jean-Paul Belmondo was convinced that the film was so bad that it would never be released. He was very surprised by the warm reception the film received. When Belmondo agreed to star in the movie, Godard gave him three pages, where it was written, "He leaves Marseilles. He Steals a Car. He wants to sleep with the Girl again, she doesn't. In the end, he either dies or leaves — to be decided" Godard wrote the dialogue for the movie on the morning of each day's shoot. Belmondo & Jean Seberg had all the freedom in the world to improvise. P.S: On this day, 66 years ago, "Breathless" (1960) was released in France.

On this day, 66 years ago, Ingmar Bergman's "The Virgin Spring" (1960) was released in Sweden. Ingmar Bergman explaining why he thought "The Virgin Spring" (1960) wasn't a good film: "I want to make it quite plain that 'The Virgin Spring' (1960) must be regarded as an aberration. It's touristic, a lousy imitation of Kurosawa. At the time I'd thought it a good film, one hell of a fine film! I considered it one of my best films. Only much later did I discover it was all exterior scenery and no inner content. It was a washout."

Samuel L. Jackson explains how he landed the role of Jules in Pulp Fiction, and what it was like seeing the film for the first time on the big screen: “Pulp Fiction and I came together in a very strange kind of way. I remember auditioning for Quentin for Reservoir Dogs in New York (for the role of of Detective Jim Holdaway, Mr. Orange’s police contact). And apparently I didn't get that role. But I was at Sundance the year that he screened it for the first time. I was sitting there and I watched that movie - I was awed by it. I mean, there were people running up the aisles when Michael Madsen was cutting the cop's ear off. People were going, "Oh my God, this is horrible!" All these “auteurs” were running out of the theatre. I was like, "This is good. This is happening. This is different." So after the film, I walked up to Quentin and said, "This film's amazing, man. It's great." And he looked at me and said, "Hey! How'd you like the guy who got your part?" And I was amazed that he even remembered who I was - but he remembered me. A year or so later, I got a phone call saying Quentin Tarantino wants to have dinner with you, because he'd seen Jungle Fever and he liked that Gator character. When we had dinner, we were sitting there talking. We started talking about Hong Kong films and cartoons and foreign movies and obscure things that we watched, horror movies. We found out we liked the same kind of stuff. And he told me he was writing this thing, and he was writing this part with me in mind. He was going to send it to me. I went off to do another film. I was in the backwoods of Virginia somewhere doing a film, and the script came. A little plain brown wrapper from Jersey Films. And Jersey's got these gangster images on the logo. And it said, "If you show this script to anybody, two guys named Ernie and Luigi will come and break both of your legs." Whatever. I went, "Yeah, right." So I sat down and read it. Boom. I read this thing. It's like, "Oh my God. This is awesome." And then I said to myself, "Nobody writes a script this good. There's no way that this script is as good as I thought it was." I closed it. I opened it again. I read it immediately. Okay. This is great - If whoever produces this film lets him shoot exactly what I just read, if they stay away from it, they don't try to edit any of this stuff out - this is going to be a great film. It's going to be kind of audience-specific, because I like that kind of stuff. I have friends that I knew would like it. It was a generational kind of film. I never thought it would cross over and do all this stuff. We shot it. We had a great time doing it. And the first time I actually saw the film was at the Cannes Film Festival. That night, it screened, and I was sitting there watching the film. The audience was loving this movie, loving it. About halfway through, I realized there were subtitles at the bottom of it. So I said, "Hey, these people are reading it, and they're getting it. This might be special. This really might be something special." And actually, by the time it was over, there were tears running down my face. I was just so pleased that I was part of that particular film… I never felt that satisfied, and that kind of full about a performance and about being part of something as I was in that particular moment.” Quote comes from an Interview with the American Film Institute 2010

The premiere of Carl Theodor Dreyer's 'Vampyr' (1932) in Germany was delayed by UFA for nearly nine months since the studio wanted the American films "Dracula" (1931) and "Frankenstein" (1931) to be released first. But the film was still a financial failure. When it finally premiered in Berlin on 6 May 1932, the audience booed the film, and Dreyer reportedly removed several scenes following the first screening. When the movie was screened in Vienna, audiences demanded their money back. When this was denied, a riot broke out, and police restored order with night sticks. Stephen King considers "Stand By Me" (1986) to be the best movie adapted from one of his books. After seeing the movie for the first time, King was moved to tears and broken up. He left the screening room for 15 minutes & upon return, he hugged Rob Reiner & said, "That`s the best film ever made out of anything I`ve written, which isn`t saying much. But you've really captured my story. It is autobiographical." After the success of the movie, King said, "You have to remember that the movie was made on a shoestring. It was supposed to be one of those things that opened in six theaters and then maybe disappeared. And instead it went viral." (Stephen King's interview with Andy Green, Rolling Stone, 2014 & "`Meathead` Rob Reiner Meets And Defeats His Longtime Demons", Gene Siskel, Chicago Tribune, 1986) P.S: On this day, 40 years ago, "Stand By Me" (1986) premiered in Los Angeles, California, USA.

On this day, 53 years ago, Douglas Hickox's "Theater of Blood" (1973) premiered in Toronto, Canada. Vincent Price on why the playing the character of Edward Lionheart in "Theater of Blood" (1973) was a dream role for him: "This was one of the most ingeniously inventive films I have ever made. It was quite unlike anything I’d ever done. before. The screenplay was so funny and original. And when I first heard all the big names they had assembled for the cast, I simply couldn’t believe it. It was a marvelous role because I got to play eight Shakespearean parts in it, which is a feast for any actor. And I got to knock off eight critics. It was a story dear to the heart of any old actor. It was a dream to make and very real to me. I really understand the man who is doing his very best and yet is unrecognized." ("The Price of Fear", Joel Eisner, 2013)
