“We Are Dying!” An Urgent Appeal from Kidney Failure Patients in Gaza City Due to the ongoing Israeli blockade, kidney failure patients in Gaza City are facing a severe shortage of medications and essential medical supplies, along with a decline in the availability of regular dialysis treatment. This situation is placing the lives of hundreds of patients at immediate risk. During my visit to Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH), Orlu, I was deeply moved by the dedication of the medical personnel and the resilience of the patients. It was heartwarming to witness the remarkable recovery rate of those receiving treatment, a testament to the hospital’s commitment to quality healthcare. The pediatric department at Nasser Hospital requested our help!! Support: There is a huge influx of patients at the hospital in Khan Younis due to displacements from the North and the number of malnourished and sick babies being born daily. In a 24 hour period, the pediatric ward had 1,000 patients visit with is 10x the usual number. Mothers, babies, children are sprawled out on the hospital floor because of the overcrowding. The Sameer Project responded by delivering 30 mattresses so that the huge number of cases have somewhere to rest and recover. Each mattress cost $75, with the total coming to $2,239 after 11% commission. We are always glad to be able to support the hospitals that are working so hard to take care of patients. While patients wait years for surgery and months to see a specialist, Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer are threatening to cut the number of NHS specialist doctor training jobs. Most people don’t realise this, but doctors can’t just become Consultants, Surgeons or GPs on their own. They have to get a speciality training job first. These jobs are controlled and capped by the Government. So when the Government talks about cutting speciality training jobs, what they are really talking about is cutting the number of future specialist doctors in this country. At a time when the NHS already doesn’t have enough doctors. At a time when waiting lists are in the millions. At a time when patients are waiting months just to see a specialist and years for operations. Cutting the number of specialist training jobs will not fix the NHS. It will make waiting lists longer. It will make it harder to see a doctor. It will make the NHS worse for patients. Threatening to reduce the number of future doctors while patients are already struggling to access care is not just a deliberate workforce policy decision. It is a direct threat to the NHS and to the public who rely on it, coming from a ‘Labour’ Government.

We keep applying cancer trial data to the wrong patients. RCTs enroll ECOG 1-2 patients. Functional. Ambulatory. Prognosis of months to years. Then we prescribe those same drugs to patients living between the hospital and a nursing facility. Haven't been out of a wheelchair in months. Prognosis of weeks. "Even if you believe the six-week difference in mortality — when you apply it to a prognosis of weeks to months, the absolute difference is non-existent. And we have that research." After being hit by shrapnel, or undergoing surgery, or suffering from illnesses, these cases have no nutritional support and no strength for their bodies to heal. As they are fighting hard to survive, their bodies are fending off hunger and trying to recover. Even those who care for patients, the dedicated nurses and doctors, who show up for work every day to see and deal with the unimaginable, to continue to try to save lives, are fainting from their hunger pains. The Sameer Project recently visited the Surgical Department of Al Shifa Hospital where we distributed 100 bulgur meals to the entire ward, as well as the nurses in the department. Each meal cost 25 shekels and weighed 500 grams. The head of the nursing department gave us special permission to access these patients and staff to assist. The initiative cost a total of approximately $825 after 10% transfer commission. We try to provide for those in the most dire need, and unfortunately if you are in the surgical department of Al Shifa, this is the case. Anti competitive practices are harming patients in Austin right now and I am asking Congress for help. Insurance companies decide where my patients are permitted to have surgery. They have refused to recognize my surgery center @redbudsurgerycenter as in network, even though it is fully certified by CMS, meets all safety standards, and is often a safer environment for complex cancer surgeries. My ask to Congress is simple. Allow doctors and patients to choose where surgery is performed. Pre existing arrangements that force care into specific facilities are anti competitive and not in the best interest of patients. This week my breast cancer patients needed surgery and were unable to receive care because of insurance. Cancer does not wait. If we want to talk about cracking down on insurance company practices, this is the place to start. What you can do right now: - Call your insurance company and ask for Redbud Surgery Center to be considered in network so we can take care of our patients. -Call your member of Congress and ask them to require insurance companies to allow doctors and patients to choose the facility where care is delivered, especially when patient safety is at risk. This is how change starts 💪
