In a show of solidarity for CNN, MSNOW, and Politico, multiple news networks have decided to deprive Trump of camera coverage when he leaves the White House. Yes, that's right, there will be no television network news cameras following the president around as a result of his decision to ban the press from the White House campus. Good. It deprives him of what he wants more than anything else: to be the center of attention. Trump is a malignant narcissist who cannot tolerate any measure of criticism. He turns to authoritarianism in the face of humiliation. He denies hard truths and lives constantly within an information bubble that his staff have worked tirelessly to maintain. A safe space where he is free from unfavorable reporting and difficult realities. So of course he lashes out whenever he encounters facts that expose him to contradictory information. Trump's latest attack against the press is part of a pattern of behavior that is consistent with how dictators, fascists and KINGS historically behave. Trump has abandoned liberal democracy for the sake of his own ego. He has been weaponizing every agency and lever of the federal government to stifle free speech and restrict press freedom. Read this: "Reporters Without Borders maintains an index that tracks press freedom in 180 countries, clocking governmental threats, subpoenas and the vindictive use of regulations against journalists. The United States now ranks at its lowest since the organization started the index in 2002 — 64th, just above Panama and just below Botswana." Trump's actions towards the press have been so EXTREME that some American journalists now enjoy the same level of freedom as reporters from third world countries! As president, Trump has been using the power of once independent law enforcement agencies to target and prosecute his political opponents and critics. He's been directing the FCC to revoke the broadcast licenses of news networks and pressure media companies into firing reporters who don't shower him with praise and late night talk show hosts who tell jokes at his expense. He's been sending federal agents to journalists' homes to intimidate them and seize their devices after they've reported on stories that reflect poorly on him. His Pentagon fired staff leadership at the independent Stars and Stripes newspaper for the same reason. The DoD also blocked access to journalists who wouldn't agree to restrict their reporting to stories that are only pre-authorized by the Pentagon. He ousted the board at the Kennedy Center and appointed himself as chair, then abused his position to cancel performances and censor free and artistic expression. He's been exploiting his executive power to influence the outcomes of mergers between multi-national media corporations and their billionaire, right wing executives with the intention of monopolizing and altering the media landscape to his political advantage. His administration is trying to control how and what information is shared to the public. He has also stripped funding from public television and radio, and has been suing major news organizations because they publish unflattering stories about him—lawsuits he frequently loses when challenged in court. At Trump's behest, the White House is restricting the press pool to mostly pro-Trump, conservative outlets, podcasters, even "influencers." Trump frequently attacks reporters for asking fair questions, and he has made "fake news" a rallying cry for the MAGA movement—often aimed at any coverage that is critical of him. The Trump administration's goal is the complete federal takeover of the national information environment Trump's White House communications director has even referred to it as "full spectrum dominance."
