Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

Does anyone know this game? I never played it in the arcade, but I had a lot of fun playing it on a PC DOS computer. All you had to do was beat your rival, but they would chase you so closely that the tension was incredible. When you win a race, you can use the prize money to upgrade your car, and with the variety of tracks, it never gets boring. I also have great memories of sitting with my friends, three of us sharing one keyboard and playing together. 😆

Did you know that arcade cabinets with CRT monitors actually had three different resolutions? Most classic 2D arcade games used a 15kHz (320×240) resolution. This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. I’ve been seeing a lot of comments lately saying that using RGB cables with dedicated monitors or TVs gives you much better image quality. Personally, though, I still enjoy playing my retro games through composite. Of course, having the best possible picture quality is great, but I actually prefer the slightly softer, less polished look I remember from back in the day, rather than the sharp and vibrant image you get from broadcast monitors or something like a Trinitron TV. About 15 years ago—like in this video—I used to hook up all my consoles with RGB cables as well. But these days, I mostly stick to this small LG TV for my retro gaming. If I ever want that clean, authentic RGB quality, I can always fire up my arcade cabinet. Oh, and just in case anyone’s wondering, the RGB selector you see in the video is a custom-built unit my friend made for me.

If you played Capcom arcade games in the ’90s, you probably remember seeing the Q Sound logo during the opening screens. Back then, I was really curious about what it actually meant, but there was no easy way to find out. I finally understood it years later after buying a Capcom Q GrandAm 25 cabinet. Most standard arcade cabinets simply output the mono sound signal from JAMMA directly without a dedicated amplifier. But this cabinet came with a separate amp designed specifically for stereo input. Because of that, when you connect the stereo outputs from CPS1.5, CPS2, or CPS3 boards to the amp, the sound becomes much richer and more immersive. What impressed me the most was that this cabinet lets you switch between Q Sound and regular mono audio, so I could compare them directly. The stereo sound definitely feels more spacious and cleaner. But the biggest difference comes from the speaker box mounted at the top. It’s made of wood and has a much larger internal space, so the audio quality is on a completely different level compared to the cheap speakers used in ordinary arcade cabinets.

The Zelda series is incredibly popular, but Breath of the Wild is actually the only game I’ve ever finished. I also bought The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when it first came out and gave it a try, but I eventually realized that it just wasn’t my kind of game. I also played The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword, but I ended up dropping all of them before reaching the ending. So for a long time, I thought the Zelda series just wasn’t for me. Then I played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and I absolutely loved it. Now that Ocarina of Time is getting a remake for the Switch 2, I’m thinking about giving it another shot. Is anyone else looking forward to the new The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?

gunwook day 1 here&now encore ending ment 🥹 💌 the first day of the encore concert has ended. it’s coming to an end. since it’s been a while since we were together with zerose and meeting you again to perform like this, i was really nervous but also really happy. even while preparing, i felt very excited. there were things we were showing for the first time, and many stages we were performing for the first time with this set, so it was really fun. more than anything, the fact that the nine of us were building and carrying the stage together felt especially precious during this concert. since i’m one of the taller members in the team and i usually stand at the very end in the official formations, i get a lot of chances to see all the members at once. every time that happens, i feel so reassured, and i really love being able to see the backs of our amazing members seeing the backs of the other eight members and also seeing their side profiles. i hope that from now on, for a long, long time, i can keep capturing those moments and those in my eyes, and i also hope i can keep filling my eyes with zerose’s blue lights and your blue smiles. somehow, i remember writing this in a letter back during our first anniversary. i said that i felt sad and upset that there might be an end, because i was so curious about what our future selves would look like. and i think i still feel that way now. i don’t know what will happen in the future, but i’ve become so curious about the futures of the other members too, and i really want to support those futures. so because of that, i think the feeling of sadness becomes a little bigger as time passes. for some zerose, today might be the last time you see us like this, or maybe you’ll see us again tomorrow, or the day after tomorrow. but i hope that you can take the image of the nine of us as zerobaseone and keep it in your hearts forever, treasuring it as something precious. and i hope we can become a presence you can always look back on something that gives you strength whenever you need it. thank you. i love you.

Art of Fighting 2 was shocking enough in its first installment, but the sequel added real depth and fun on top of that impact. I’ve played many fighting games, but Art of Fighting 2 is one of those rare titles that’s genuinely fun even against the CPU, not just in player-versus-player matches. Maybe it’s because after throwing your opponent, you can immediately fire a projectile and put them into a dizzy state. If you learn how to use that properly, you can enjoy the game for a long time. The bonus stages are also great — unlocking new special moves and using them alongside the original super moves feels incredibly satisfying. Graphics, sound, characters — there’s nothing lacking. It’s a true masterpiece.

I naturally expected it to be ported to home consoles and waited for it, but in the end, it never came out on any console. Interestingly, though, it was ported to PC. It had a few shortcomings, but I have great memories of playing it on a 386 computer and having a really good time. Anyone else play it?
