Will forever stand by the fact that The Battle of Scarif at the end of Rogue One is genuinely one of the greatest fictional battles that I've ever watched in a movie. Gareth Edwards' stunning visuals only make this sequence even more iconic, and I'll always appreciate how they utilized unused footage from 1977 to further interconnect this story to the original Star Wars film. Can't believe it's almost been a decade since I first watched this in theaters, seeing this in IMAX with a packed crowd back in 2016 was unreal.

The first draft of Rogue One actually had Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor survive. Gareth Edwards and writer Gary Whitta wanted the heroes to sacrifice themselves, but assumed Disney would never let them kill off the entire main cast. Then Kathleen Kennedy read the script and asked: “Shouldn’t they all die?” Edwards couldn’t believe they were being given the green light. And that’s how Rogue One got one of the boldest endings in Star Wars.

The same footage that took months to shoot across six countries… one bad light exposure away from being completely ruined. Nolan sat there and watched it happen. He later told Jimmy Fallon: “They opened up all the cans. It was a massive amount of film cans… and they did not actually expose it. In the ensuing battle, 4 members of Rogue Team would be lost.
