While exploring the Lucasfilm archives for Rogue One, Gareth Edwards discovered cans of original Star Wars footage that had never been fully digitised. Among them were unused 1977 shots of Red Leader and Gold Leader. ILM restored the footage and placed the pilots into the Battle of Scarif nearly... show more

Gareth Edwards is a fantastic director who focuses on the source material and what the fans want. So of course Kathleen Kennedy had to get rid of him.

Rogue One is the second best Star Wars movie after Empire and Andor is far and away the best series they made. Come at me. I know I’m right

They were consistent with the original film. I always liked how Gold Leader is a by-the-books dork and Red Leader is from Planet Alabama.

Partly correct. Actor Angus MacInnes was alive at the time and re-recorded some of the voice dialogue for Rogue One.

I didn’t know this. I actually couldn’t tell until now.

Loved this movie. Rogue One is the best of Star Wars. As are the two Andor series.

Hey, let's make a movie that's worse than the Holiday special.

The only good Disney Star Wars film. Works very well as a prequel to New Hope.

Still love that gold leader is reading the script from inside the cockpit, hence why it seems he’s looking down a lot 🤣

I want to see more of Porkins !!!!

The Battle of Scarif is the most Star Wars thing you will ever see in a Star Wars movie.

If Disney ever reboots to decanonize the sequels and their spinoffs, I hope they keep Rogue One canon.

I hope everyone of those actors from 40 years ago got a credit.

I remember watching this in the theater and thinking, Red and Gold squaderans should be there. Right after I thought that they showed up. I wanted to cheer!

Genius move. Also, Wedge was not there because he was helping run the operation from the base. His voice is heard making announcements.

Gold Leader's actor was still alive and recorded new lines for the film. You can tell when the new lines kick in because they cut to an exterior shot and distort his voice with radio static.

Rogue One was excellent from start to finish.

I watched Rogue One again recently and realised that it was actually a terrible Star Wars film, devoid of any real fun, wit or irreverence and over populated by miserable, po faced English toffs trying to sound all profound.

Red leader is played by Denis Lawson. He is Ewan MacGregor's uncle.

That was such a cool surprise in the theater, those of us of a certain age erupted with excitement at such attention to detail. Especially learning what happened to Red 5 before Luke and, of course, Vader's massacre at the end. Amazing connections back to the first film, so fun.

I really hope Disney gets someone with talent and a love for the original source material to make the Rogue Squadron movie.

Liked Rogue One pretty good, except, A) they filmed it like it was 2015 not 1977 -- that is shaky cam, high contrast footage, and space battles still looked a little too cg, and B) Most of the main rebel leaders were had a Brit accent, which breaks from what GL established.

Cgi star wars is ass

You know, I never caught Gold 5 becoming Gold Leader (for all like 3 seconds).

Sadly, they lacked their ace at Scarif: 'ol Red Six himself, Jek Tono Porkins! RIP

@IMAX @IMAX_JAPAN please bring this back to theaters… People need to see this battle in 3-D. Nobody has 3-D televisions anymore or ever did. This needs to be experienced. Please bring this back. Once a month would be nice.

@McNate1973 SO cool........

Sitting in the theater watching that dive into the death star blew my 14yr old mind, never seen anything since that had the same effect.

I remember seeing Red 5 and thinking "well bud, you're fucked".

For a film with heavy rewrites and reshoots, this movie gets a lot of praise. I get it, it’s not perfect, but it is very fun and done well.

Always had wondered how they did that. Cool story Thx

Rogue One is without a doubt my fav. The trilogy is Rogue One A New Hope Empire Strikes Back

😎

Both Rogue One and The Force Awakens are to be commended for their archaeologist-like conviction to bring back the SENSIBILITY of the original. Whether that’s by using footage, the same raw ingredients and so on and so on.

So Gold Five was instantly promoted to Gold Leader. But, is there any word on what happened with Red Six (Porkins) who was asked, after his ship was destroyed, if he could see Red Five (Luke)?
