NEW: Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson says he is fighting to give new taxing powers to Springfield by changing the state constitution. “We’ve received clear indication from members of the General Assembly that they support this [millionaire tax] effort that I’m pushing.” But that would require a statewide referendum. And there is no path to passing a statewide constitutional amendment in Illinois with Johnson’s name attached. In 2020, the progressive tax constitutional amendment on the ballot won 71% support from Chicago voters and still lost statewide. In 2024, Johnson’s Bring Chicago Home referendum won just 48% from Chicago voters. When the mayor can’t win a simple majority in his own city, it’s difficult to believe state lawmakers would want a referendum on his leadership on every ballot in Illinois.

The mayor claims his head tax proposal means Chicago is "setting the trend". Unfortunately, it would be a downward trend. One that means greater job losses. Fighting for working people requires job creation. Working people enjoy having jobs to go to. Policies that lead to businesses cutting jobs are inherently harmful to the working class. Policies that lead to job creation are pro-worker. This should not be a complicated policy to understand. Chicago needs less taxes and more growth. The head tax not only hurts businesses for being successful, but it ultimately hurts the workers who depend on those important jobs the most.

People are not going to like certain kinds of revenue enhancements that he’s got in his budget. There was a shooting today at Walmart on 95th and Western. Two gunmen opened fire outside, then ran into Walmart and kept shooting inside. This is my Walmart , I go there all the time. And this is what we live with. Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson wants us to believe crime is down, but it’s not. We can’t even shop in peace or walk in our neighborhoods without fear of being shot. This is what I’m fighting for ,safety, peace, and protection for our communities. We need help. The mother of five, Kiara Jenkins, lay dead for 10 hours before her body was even found. Meanwhile, Mayor Brandon Johnson is out here using the police to investigate ICE, instead of protecting Chicago citizens. We have people shot, bleeding, dying, and left in the streets, and he doesn’t address it at all. No press conference. No outrage. No accountability. But Pritzker found a loophole: The Automatic Inflation Tax. Years ago, he signed a law tying the state gas tax directly to inflation. That means when inflation spikes and your budget is stretched to the breaking point, your taxes automatically go up. The result? The four biggest tax hike years in Illinois history have all happened under this one administration. In practice, it's taxation on autopilot. Now, they are taking this exact same playbook and aiming it at the Illinois toll roads. If they succeed, your toll bills will automatically increase every time inflation ticks up. And they are relying on you being too distracted to notice the automatic deductions draining your bank account. But! There is a window to stop it. The toll board hasn't finalized this yet.
