Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

Let me introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade game), a game I had an absolute blast playing in arcades when I was a kid. Back then, Konami was making a lot of belt-scrolling action games using various IPs, and this title was a huge hit. It was also ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the arcade feel was recreated surprisingly well, which made it very popular. Even today, it’s still incredibly fun to play 👌

It's no surprise that this legends ultimately became Sega's top-selling arcade game in 1987 and is still talked about today, in its 40th year.

When I first saw this game in the arcade, I thought it was similar to OutRun. But instead of running on a fixed circuit, you follow a straight course, which makes racing really fun. It was only released on the Nintendo 64 in North America, so only NA gamers knew about it. It never came out in Asia, and the region code was different, so there was no way to play it back then. Nowadays, you can run it using EverDrive or code-free mods.

Let me introduce Altered Beast, one of Sega’s classic arcade games. If you’re in your 40s and spent any time in arcades, you’ve probably seen it at least once—more likely many times. When you defeat the white wolf, it drops an orb. When you collect it, you hear the famous “Power up!” voice and the main character starts becoming more muscular. After the third power-up, he finally transforms into a beast, gaining incredible strength. That transformation is really the core of the game. Another fun part is that each stage lets you transform into different beasts like a werewolf, dragon, tiger, or bear. I had a lot of fun playing it in arcades back then. Later it was ported to the Mega Drive and also to the Famicom. But the Famicom version was a bit disappointing compared to what I expected. The transformation animation is one of the highlights of the game, but it’s missing there, so it doesn’t quite capture the same impact as the arcade version.

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness (Blizzard, 1995) was such a badass game back in the day. Sure, from today's perspective it looks outdated, the graphics a bit clunky, the rendered cutscenes will at best get a "pass", but for anyone who plated RTS games in the 90s, Warcraft 2 was among the best. There was a time when Blizzard just rolled out incredible games: Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, and then World of Warcraft - all four of those had such a massive impact on the gaming culture. It all started with "Warcraft: Orcs & Humans", but I chose the sequel for this post, since I believe this was their real break through game. Hard to believe for modern gamers... but Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness was once peak gaming! Within the period from 1993 to 1999, Warcraft II was the 6th best selling game among all that were released during that time.

I really love racing games, especially the early 3D racing games that first appeared in the ’90s — like Daytona USA, Ridge Racer, Scud Race, and Sega Rally. The Sega Rally I’m talking about today feels completely different from on-road racing games. I really love the sliding physics. Predicting the course and starting your drift in advance feels amazing. The PC version was based on the Saturn version of Sega Rally, but the original arcade version is still the coolest. Have you played this game?

It adds a green circular ring portal to every #vibejam game that players can walk, swim, jump, drive, sail or fly through and get teleported to any of the other 1000+ games It's like a mini meta verse for vibe coded games to teleport through Last year it was a bit buggy because me and s13k had to manually manage all the games added and games would start 404'ing quickly This year it works differently and is fully automated: the Vibe Portal tracks which games send traffic to other games, and based on that sends traffic back to them, so automatically if a game doesn't send traffic, it knows either it doesn't have a portal or the portal is not working (like the last fish game in this video) or not shown properly in the game. In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales. And by the way, the Mega Drive shown in the video is a custom modification that combines the console and the 32X into a single integrated unit. 😆

Moon Patrol by Irem, from 1982 - probably one of the most iconic games of the early 80s. When you walked into an arcade, you could hear this one from a mile away. The music lives rent-free in my head. Moon Patrol was also the very first game that introduced full parallax scrolling - with a whopping 3 levels scrolling at independent rates (sky, mountains, front terrain) - giving it a better sense of "3D".

Malls used to have arcades full of video games, and in the early 1990s they were always super busy and jam packed. This is the TILT arcade at Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo in 1991. In ninth grade my friend Jason, who I used to skate with, bragged in class that he could drive a stick and that he could teach me too. It wasn’t in a real car, but on a sit-down racing game with a clutch at a place called TILT, which was at Fashion Island Mall in San Mateo. I begged my parents to let me go on a Friday night and they finally said yes, as long as I was home by ten. We skated there from El Camino in San Mateo and it felt like the longest ride of my life. That whole night was spent on the game, taking turns shifting through the gears like it meant something. I still remember it clearly, because it was the first time my parents let me stay out late, and at the time it felt like the best night I had ever had.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. I’ve been playing games since the ’80s, but the most shocking graphics I ever experienced had to be Daytona USA. Running on Sega’s Model 2 hardware with smooth 60fps and high-resolution visuals — I didn’t know the specs back then, but I could instantly tell it looked on a completely different level from other games. And that iconic “Let’s go away!” from the opening? One line and I’m right back in the arcade. Daytona USA 2 was great too, but somehow I still prefer the original’s unique speed and atmosphere. Pretty sure everyone tried this at the arcade at least once, right? 🎮
