For anyone curious, they also go by their name of yard tractor. Instead of lifting the legs up, the fifth wheel gets pulled up and it has connections for the air brakes. These trucks are expensive and regulated by DOT in strange ways, versus that car that guy was using

Dude you don’t need a CDL to move the trailers on the property grounds! Most likely it’s due to cost risks from some of these kids missing the plate slamming the cab into the trailer or getting the pin stuck up on the plate…shit I’ve seen a couple idiotic actions in the yard 🤣

I don't think they need to worry until they see one of these pulling a trailer down the road

Yard jockeys don’t have cdl. This is actually how you get experience driving trailers without having a license. Also smaller facilities that can’t justify the cost of an actual jockey will use this to move a trailer for when the drivers show up.

That’s just not true. Most spotters are in fact cdl holders because they are a backup plan in case an extra driver is needed. Amazon is just being cheap by not wanting to pay a driver, but they’re also being extremely inefficient.

Hi, former OTR trucker, lease operator and company owner here. These yard operators (called Yard Dogs) are not required to have a CDL because they never leave company property. Yard dogs are not “backup” drivers to sub in for OTR drivers.

Can someone please inform this guy that you don't need a CD l to drive in a parking lot with the trailers? That's private property , they've never used c d l drivers for that

CDL's are for drive ways. Private property is not a drive way. Police are allowed to get in drive ways and give you a ticket. If there is a sign that says private property or authorized vehicles only no license is needed. The license is only needed because they want to skip the lessons to driving

As some one who works for a company that deals with Amazon. Having these or yard goats is saving them lot my money. Amazon does not hire “cdl” drivers. They are all foreigners. The don’t speak English and and DESTROY every trailer they get. My shop is full of trailers from Amazon

Should workers who move airplanes around the airfield, need a pilot license?

I worked for Coco Cola, they use switching trucks with guys who have no CDL. Like you said this guy doesn’t know shit.

And? Who cares? If you don't like it don't buy from Amazon and don't work for Amazon. It's amazing how stupid people are to not understand capitalism.

Just so you’re aware that Mr. Tom in order to drive a spotter more commonly called a yard dog because most of these places have yards multiple locations within a two or 3 mile radius of there ceiling for trailers. You need to have a CD out to do it.

So this one guy is angry because a business found a more efficient and less expensive way to their operation, while at the same time potentially cutting some liability and giving someone potentially entry level work into their large scale business?

Yard Dogs or Yard Jockey’s are used by their employees to move trailers over their property

It actually is a cdl position. You can go on indeed and find many spotter positions requiring a cdl because experience matters. Amazon can do whatever they want, but it's time consuming to move this thing around the yard. They will need at least four just to keep up with a truck

So what. You can’t get mad about a company doing something that saves time and money. You better adapt and get with the program.

Not sure I see his issue. Sounds like common sense to do this to minimise costs.

It’s even crazier because a lot of yards don’t even require you to have a CDL to be a yard dog or a spotter

I did the spotter before, as a manager of a Warehouse because nobody else would do it. I did not need a CDL. It was nice having a heater in the winter and AC in the summer plus it had a radio. Those fools are missing out.

Making it robotic would make more sense and enen less costly, mostly programming you would have to keep up to date with and maintenance is every what 6mth.

Mark's profile picture

Amazon only does this at extremely small facilities where they only have to move around like 5 to 6 of these trailers. they essentially use these trailers for storage at smaller sites.

In the state of Illinois you dont need a CDL on private property to spot either.

FRAUDULENT CDL SCHOOL UPDATE: DHS alongside the DOT has found 75 CDL schools suspected of helping illegals fraudulently qualify for CDL licenses. These “schools”, called CDL mills, would fast track non-English speaking illegals through their “classes” and help them obtain non-domiciled CDL licenses. These “mills” led to hundreds of thousands of illegals being issued fraudulent CDL licenses, resulting in Americans being killed on U.S. highways. Earlier this year, I began investigating how migrants were getting licenses and found schools just like the one below, advertising CDL classes in foreign languages to migrants overseas, even offering free housing and airport pick up for migrant attendees. Some schools even advertised that migrants could get their license in “as little as 10 days”. DOT has tried to crack down on this issue and has since: Taken 24,000 drivers off the roads for failing to speak English Forced states to cancel 28,000 licenses illegally issued to foreign drivers Purged 9,500 unqualified CDL training schools from FMCSA registry. The DOT also re-instated “English Language Proficiency” requirements, ensuring that drivers could speak/understand English before being granted their CDL license. Now they’re going after the nationwide CDL mills that helped these non-English speaking migrants get their licenses. (I am unaware if the below school is a part of the above mentioned investigation and will reach out to the DOT for comment. I am simply attaching the video as an example of how CDL schools across the nation have been advertise their CDL training programs).
