Honestly it’s becoming a problem for me that BJJ is less of a workout as I get better

He’s right. Once I stopped exploding and moving like it was a championship wrestling match and started just flowing and moving calmly and only exploding when I need too, I could go 10 minute rounds instead of gassing after 3 minutes lol

it's different, but the base is still cardio as a coach put it... I've never seen a serious runner show up to jiu jitsu and get really tired me neither boxers and MMA guys run the track jiu jitsu guys don't but it's a matter of culture

You can test this yourself. When I roll with people and the skill gap is large I don't really have to do much. Change it up with a buy bigger/stronger AND more technical guy - my output has to increase by orders of magnitude that isn't sustainable.

You know Gordon hates you whenIn addition to technical and energy efficiency he also gives you the mothers milk. Being between this dude's breasts while gasping for oxygen has to suck.

Yep... but that perspective would apply mostly to grapplers with substantially uneven skills levels. However, when playing mostly on the same level, advanced cardio will give a grappler advantage in the longevity of the match; and, breathing management for thinking.

This is why 2mins of wrestlings is worse than an hour of jits😆

Gordon is partially correct here - what he’s describing is economy, which is basically a proxy for aerobic capacity. In the case of BJJ it is technical efficiency x intensity which ultimately determines your cardio. “Cardio” is modality specific.

100% agree with the technical aspects affecting work rate but there's more to it than just skills. Strength is also a factor. If I'm using 50% of my strength and my opponent is using 90% of his, he'll get tired faster than me.
