I flew my drone through Austin while riding in a Tesla Cybercab. No driver. No steering wheel. No pedals. Nobody up front. I got in, set my temperature, pressed one button, and the car took me where I wanted to go. That’s it. The closest thing I can compare it to is an elevator. You don’t get into an elevator and think about who’s operating it. You press a button. The doors close. You arrive. Cybercab felt exactly like that… except it was moving me through Austin. And after experiencing it, I keep coming back to one thought... How does Uber compete with this long term? An Uber is still built around a human driver. You’re getting into somebody else’s car. Their music. Their smell. Their temperature. Their mood. Their driving style. Maybe they want to talk. Maybe they’re on the phone. Maybe they miss a turn. Maybe you just want to sit there quietly and get where you’re going. Cybercab removes all of that. The car pulls up. The doors open. You get in. Set the cabin the way you want it. Press Start Ride. And go. No awkward small talk. No tipping. No wondering who is picking you up. No driver needing to earn enough $ money from the trip. No business model built around constantly finding, paying, and managing millions of human drivers. Uber’s biggest asset today is its driver network. As expected, Tesla’s Model Y ride-hailing service in the Bay Area currently has a safety driver in the driver’s seat, which is why Tesla is calling it a ride-hailing service rather than a Robotaxi service. It is still a paid service though and is likely using the same software as the Austin Robotaxis. Once Tesla receives the required permit, they will remove the safety driver and instead have a safety monitor in the passenger seat like they do in Austin. That could happen within the next 1–2 months, according to Elon.

This is why you don’t get in front of a vehicle! I do NOT think he will be doing that again! Dude lunges at a vehicle in a parking lot, breaking the back windshield. He then proceeds to kick the vehicle and challenge the driver to a brawl. The driver gets out for a minute and has words with the attacker before getting back into his vehicle to drive off. The man then steps in front of the vehicle as the driver floors it, giving him a ride on the hood of his car for the length of the parking lot. Play stupid games……

It was a normal day for this Uber driver. He’s been picking up and dropping off people all day. Everything was going fine for him until he picks up this woman. Off the bat he says she seemed a little weird and spaced out. He was talking to a friend on a hands free headset when she stated that she felt unsafe with him in the car. So he pulls over and she calls customer service. She lies to customer service about not being able to go elsewhere because there is no business’s she can wait at for another Uber. We grew up hearing the same rules over and over: “Don’t talk to strangers, don’t ever get in a car with one, and definitely don’t take candy or anything else from them.” But now? We open an app, message a total stranger, climb into their car, and sometimes even take a bottle of water or a mint they offer us. Sure, we double-check the license plate, say their name out loud, and they say ours back… but let’s be real, it still feels a little weird, right? We’re basically doing all the “never do this” stuff our parents drilled into us. I use Uber a lot traveling, but I don’t crawl in until the driver says my name. My app is set up with a personal contact that is notified as soon as the Uber driver puts my pin into his phone, then it notifies my PC that I am route to my destination. My PC can track my movement and is also notified immediately if the driver veers of the route. Once at my destination my PC is automatically sent my arrival time. Do you uber?

Took my first ride in a public Tesla Tesla Robotaxi today in San Francisco. Called it in an alley and the driver intervened after a few minutes of waiting to make a left turn out of the alley. He took a right manually and turned self-driving on again. The robotaxi immediately turned into the same one-way alley which prompted the driver to take over again. He did a u-turn in the alley manually and eventually the robotaxi was able to make the turn into the busy street. To interventions in what was supposed to be a 6-minute ride but took 15 minutes due to traffic. Not the best first ride but that's how it goes sometimes. I'm curious what this experience will be like after Tesla launches the service, especially with the Cybercab where there's no steering wheel or driver.
