Day one of Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur is in the books, and a couple of small moments already say a lot about how meticulous he is. No matter how minor or major the situation, he coaches what the game presents. The first example came when he approached Dominic Solanke. During a small sided game, Solanke was using constant movement, checking runs and changing direction to create space. When play paused, De Zerbi stepped in to explain that in tight areas, locking/shielding the defender directly can actually create more space surrounding him to receive, without needing movement. It sounds simple, but if it needs coaching, he addresses it immediately and with intent. The moments of when to move vs when to lock on! The second moment highlighted his well known focus on tempo. He urged calm from defenders when they had an overload, encouraging them to slow things down just enough to ensure accurate distribution. That patience also allows the structure ahead of the ball to take shape and for movement to develop, leading to more controlled and progressive possession. When the moment is right tempo speeds up to progress the play! The detail stands out. If it's detail and energy Tottenham wanted, Roberto De Zerbi will 100% bring that.

Incredible insight from Luis Enrique when asked about Cesc Fabregas and his view that football is moving increasingly mainly towards movement patterns, manipulation of space and coordinated actions, rather than traditional positional play, which he believes is becoming a thing of the past. The modern game is less about where a player is positioned and more about when, why and how they move to an area of the pitch. The best teams are now defined by their ability to recognise the opponent’s structure, identify the spaces that can be attacked and then coordinate the timing of movement to exploit them. It is not movement for the sake of movement. It is movement with purpose, based on recognition, timing and collective understanding. Luis Enrique reinforces a fascinating principle he spoke about last season. The objective of modern football is to become unpredictable for the opponent while remaining completely predictable to your own teammates. That is the real challenge at the highest level. Creating freedom without losing organisation. Producing variation without creating chaos. Giving players the intelligence to adapt their positioning and movement while maintaining a shared understanding of what the team is trying to achieve. At the weekend, De Zerbi was coaching his double pivot during build up against a press led by a single centre forward. The key detail, the pivots must remain staggered. As the ball travels across to the opposite centre back, the opposition number 10 jumps to press. In doing so, the number 10 blocks the passing lane into one pivot as he moved. But the staggered positioning in the pivot positions creates the solution, the ball side pivot stays behind the first line of pressure. The opposite pivot drops at an angle to receive. A passing lane opens around the pressing player who jumps to press. The team escapes pressure and progresses through the centre. There has been a misconception online that we have switched to a 4-2-3-1 in the last two games. That’s not true. It’s the same 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 we have played all season. Woltemade is playing LCM. My thinking as to why it seems we aren’t is because of the freedom Eddie offers our players within the structure. Woltemade is allowed to move and receive between the lines, just like Willock (when he plays LCM) is allowed to hold width and use his pace in wide areas.

Pressing, transitions and goals in Canada! After the hiring of Jesse Marsch this week by Canada Soccer , there has been lots of talk about pressing and transitions in the football community. This is THE style of play that we have used for the last 5 years with Alliance United FC in @L1OMens and will give you some insight in how this can look. We went away from the 'possession' based 1-4-3-3 that everyone has been using as the 'best way' to develop players and win games. Many say this is the 'right way' of playing. However, we use the players' abilities and inabilities as the starting point and based on players produced in Canada, within our youth system, this is the way we think will get us the best results and help our players get to the next level. You need to understand youth development in our country to understand what is and what is not being taught to young players. This is not a negative outlook, it is just looking at the reality. Many mistake this style of play as just non-stop pressing and chaos. Yes, these two aspects are important but it is a much more deliberate and planned way of playing that is used to predict where the opposition will play the ball, where the ball can be dictated and what areas the opposition leave open for transitions when they attack. In 2019, I was introduced to Ernst Tanner former Academy Director of Red Bull Salzburg and current Philadelphia Union Sporting Director that has led the club to being one of the top clubs in MLS and arguably the best academies in North America the last few years. Both organisations are known for their pressing and fast transitions in addition to producing top players. He became a mentor to me and gave me insights and education on this style of play. He has changed the way I look at football. Every season we try to recruit players that can play this style that I will describe below and we do not waiver in the way we played. Every game since 2019 Alliance United FC have played either in a 1-4-2-2-2 or a 1-4-4-2 midfield diamond....every game. We have no secrets in how we play. We focus on defending, pressing, forcing teams into mistakes and transition football. It is important to understand that we do not care how much possession we have and we actually want the opposition to have the ball most of the time. Stats in football show that only when a team has the ball 70% or more in a match their is a correlation to winning. Anything less is not correlated to winning in a certain match. In addition, 80% of goals are scored under 5 passes or less and under 10 seconds when regaining possession. We follow the trend! So, here are some important points based on the video: a) Pressing higher up the pitch when possible. All 11 players are committed to the team intention (principles) and if anybody is not committed and does not contribute to this style of play, they do not play. There is no leeway on this. Either you are in 100% in or you are not. All it takes is one player to not commit and the plan will not work. If we do not win the ball on the high press, everyone is to drop behind the ball as fast as possible to restart the press closer to our goal. b) Based on the opponent's scouting we press certain players and decide if will press closer to the sideline and 'pin' the player to the sideline or we dictate the passes and dribbles centrally and 'surround' the player to win the ball in central positions. We also decide if we will sometimes drop lower for the opposition to advance so we can play behind them when winning the ball. This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. This is a quick overview of a different way of playing football that Canada will see with the Men's National Team.

This is done if we scout that the opposition centre-backs are slower than our two strikers. This means we will 'outrun' them in the space they leave behind. c) When winning the ball we want to exploit space behind their backline as the priority which means that a player(s) need to be passing options behind the backline and preferably centrally which is closer to the goal, players winning the ball has to look to play the ball to the player furthest up the pitch. Possession is not a priority but scoring goals as fast as possible is. d) When winning the ball we stay as central as possible with passes and dribbling. We use the width of the penalty area (44 yards) as the preferable dimension when transitioning. We want to stay within this width. The wider the team plays the ball, the more time the opposition has to block the middle. PLAY AS VERTICALLY AS POSSIBLE! The emphasis is to get the ball to the two strikers and play 1v1 against the CBs. e) We know that most youth players grow up playing against a 1-4-3-3 which means there is one central striker meaning the centre-backs one back press and one can cover. Against 2 strikers this is not possible and many centre-backs do not have the ability to play 1v1 with space behind them. They are not taught the cues to step and press or drop to protect space behind them. They are never taught at youth level. We exploit this deficiency. e) All 11 players must get up the pitch to close the spaces if we lose the ball from our attacking transition so the opposition cannot transition against us and we can counter-press. f) A goal is the best outcome based on the objective of attacking but at the minimum we want to get a shot on goal from a transition. THE ANSWER TO ADAM SILVER.. Basketball is a simple game… the teams that dominate SIMPLE, have the most success. What Europe does extremely well for their players, is give them a SOLID FOUNDATION of understanding team basketball, give them freedom to build their Individual Skill, and make every game Meaningful Something. That Foundation is simple to teach, we don’t do a good job of it in America. In top of that, when players don’t do the little things, we don’t hold them accountable to them. When the best ones get to the next level where their talent/skill is even, they can’t get on the floor or impact winning bc of this. By sheer numbers we’ll always have Size/Speed/Athleticism and Skill to choose from. Build these players with Stronger TEAM FOUNDATIONS, hold them accountable to it, and you’ll build AMERICAN BASKETBALL. P.S. the reason this probably won’t happen is the same reason why people won’t watch this full 1:30 video… its boring

Challenge Your Own Coaching Inspired 100% by Jamie Hamilton, Roger Bonet "Ruxi" & many others that keep bringing "Relationism" to the front of footballing discussions as the cure to boring "Positional" Play. I've been pretty obsessed with Positional Play, occupying areas, making the pitch big & exploiting through rotations and penetrating when a gap is created. So, last night decided to just chuck a curve-ball and see how players would react to trying to throw some combination ladders (A to C through B Dummy) and into a possession box promoting a point for success & what followed was: > Quick Successes after Untidy Chaos > Combination Play Improved > Players Scanning for Each Other > Going Into Crowded Areas It didn't quite transfer into the 8v8 with the big goals at the end but it has seemed to challenge players to play off 3rd players and combinations much quicker and with a more direct route through traffic. I may yet be converted 🤣

This is a Manchester City positional transfer rondo from their open training session today. Very Pep Guardiola like from Enzo Maresca who it seems is keen not to change too much. Play is continuous 8v3, with the team in possession aiming to complete a set number of passes before transferring the ball into the opposite zone for one point. A bonus point is awarded if the transfer is made through the neutral link player positioned in the central dividing zone. Players are limited to one or two touches. Arsenal are yet to concede a goal this season, and there are some interesting details behind the way they are preparing their players defensively in matchday warm ups. Their training has placed a much greater emphasis on duels, but their approach to matchday preparation is equally interesting. The coaches are heavily involved, working closely with their specific units. Here is Gabriel Heinze, for example, on Monday night away at Aston Villa. What stands out is the lack of a fixed routine. There is no predetermined sequence where the ball travels from A to B, the player follows the pass, and the pattern simply continues. Arsenal approach it differently. The work is position specific and built around actions the players are likely to experience in the game, but the sequence itself is not planned in advance. The players do not know exactly what is coming next, which means they have to constantly process information, make decisions and react. That is exactly what the game will demand from. The purpose of this random and reaction based work is to switch the players on mentally before kick off. They cannot simply go through the motions or operate on autopilot, as can sometimes happen during closed passing patterns. Every action demands concentration, awareness and a response to the information in front of them. It is a small detail, but an interesting one. Arsenal are preparing the brain as much as the body, and so far, it is working.
