Why don’t teams go for two here? I’ve never understood.

I get that it didn’t work out for this theory in the Houston/Texas Tech game… I do agree with you 100 percent and have this thought somewhat often. I feel like teams usually score and get the two point conversion when down 8… 9 basically puts it out reach

My theory is always this. Do you trust your offense to convert a 2 more than your defense to stop an attempt? If so go for it

Kicking that extra point won them that game in regulation btw

In college the try is from the 3 and XP is 19 yards, the XP is 100% a better call. In the NFL I think you can argue the strategy.

You now have your answer sir, odds of other team scoring td and converting 2 point aint great

Because then they would’ve been in OT instead of winning the game

Jake you stumbled into some complex GTO math. most math models say they would prefer the other team take the roughly 45% conversion rate going for 2 it’s close and arguably wrong. If the coach is aggressively finding tiny math edges throughout the game, this could be correct.

Let's say TTU did go for two, Houston then scored a TD which would've made it 26-27, and an extra point ties the game. Instead, TTU makes the extra point, Houston gets the TD making it 26-28 and TTU stops them on the 2 pt attempt. That's why you don't go for 2

It all depends on whether you think your team is better or worse than the other team at 2 pt conversions.

They don't understand math yet

Because you put the pressure on the other team to score and convert a 2 pt rather than yourselves and giving away your advantage.

I think it’s a fair question if you are a road double digit underdog

Because if you go for two and don’t get it then it’s only 7 points, and that 2 point conversion last night would’ve been to win the whole game instead of tie. Game of inches they got lucky

Especially since the 2 pt conv could have easily been called good and there wouldn’t been any evidence to overturn.. I also agree you go for 2 to go up 2 scores

On the road, maybe. But at home you gotta kick it to go up 8. Force them to score AND get a 2 pt conversion. On the road in a hostile environment. Worst case you go to OT.

Well if ur only up 7 the other team can win on a 2pt conversion which would be bad. If ur up 8 the other team can only tie, leaving u in a much better situation

You give the trailing team the information advantage of knowing what they need to do in order to win.
