OpenAI just announced API access to o1 (advanced reasoning model) yesterday. I'm delighted to announce today a new short course, Reasoning with o1, built with OpenAI, and taught by Colin Jarvis, Head of AI Solutions at OpenAI, to show you how to use this effectively! Unlike previous language models which generate output directly, o1 “thinks before it responds,” and generates many reasoning tokens before returning a more thoughtful and accurate response. It is great at complex reasoning -- including planning for agentic workflows, coding, and domain-specific reasoning in STEM fields like law. But how you should use it is quite different from other LLMs. I think o1 will be a game changer for many AI applications; and in this course, you'll learn how to use it effectively. In detail, you’ll: - Learn to recognize what tasks o1 is suited for, and when to use a smaller model, or combine o1 with a smaller model - Understand the new principles of prompting reasoning models: Be simple and direct; no explicit chain-of-thought required; use structure; show rather than tell - Implement multi-step orchestration in which o1 plans, and hands tasks over to gpt-4o-mini to execute specific steps; this illustrates a design pattern to optimize intelligence (accuracy) and cost - Use o1 for a coding task to build a new application, edit existing code, and test performance by running a coding competition between o1-mini and GPT 4o - Use o1 for image understanding and learn how it performs better with a "hierarchy of reasoning," in which it incurs the latency and cost upfront, preprocessing the image and indexing it with rich details so it can be used for Q&A later - Learn a technique called meta-prompting, in which you use o1 to improve your prompts. Using a customer support evaluation set, you'll iteratively use o1 to modify a prompt to improve performance You'll also learn about how OpenAI used reinforcement learning to produce a model that uses "test-time compute" to improve performance. I think you'll find this course enjoyable and valuable. Please sign up for it here:

I have been testing DeepSeek-V4-Pro with the Pi coding agent. I am mindblown by how well it works out of the box. A few notes: I spent a few hours building an LLM wiki with an agent powered entirely by DeepSeek-V4-Pro on Fireworks inference. This is the first time I feel like there is an open-weight model that can reason at the level of Claude and Codex. And it does this in a cost-effective way with support for 1M context length. To be clear, I am using DeepSeek-V4-Pro inside of Pi without any special configuration. It works out of the box. It's exciting that there is a model that can just be plugged into a basic harness like Pi, and it just works. I've never seen that before. Most models require lots of configuration and setup. DeepSeek's DeepSeek-V4-Pro is clearly good at agentic coding (probably the best from the open-weight models), but the model is also great on knowledge-intensive tasks where reasoning matters. The agent pulled agentic engineering best practices from different company docs (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Stripe, Meta, Modal, DeepSeek, Mistral, Cohere), searched and digested Reddit and HN threads, summarized arxiv papers, and surfaced trending GitHub repos. Then it distilled everything into actionable tips across categories. I love the Wiki it built. The quality is really good. Here is a snapshot of what the wiki looks like: DeepSeek-V4-Pro handled the task without breaking stride. Multi-step research queries, code generation for scaffolding, context-heavy reasoning across disparate sources. For coding specifically, this is the first open-weight model that genuinely feels like a Codex or Claude Code experience. It compares in capability and actual multi-turn agentic work. What made the loop feel so responsive was Fireworks' inference speed (the fastest in the market) and the fact that they actually validate models at the systems level before shipping. No corrupted reasoning traces. Just fast, reliable iteration. The hybrid CSA and HCA attention design cuts KV cache to just 10% and inference FLOPs by nearly 4x at 1M-token context. This is what makes the agent loop actually fast and cheap enough to run in practice. For devs who've been watching open-weight models close the gap but haven't found one that actually delivers in practice, this is the closest I've seen. Try it here:

New short course: Collaborative Writing and Coding with OpenAI Canvas! Explore new ways to write and code with OpenAI Canvas, a user-friendly interface that allows you to brainstorm, draft, and refine text and code in collaboration with ChatGPT. In the short course, created with OpenAI, and taught by , a research lead at OpenAI, you’ll learn to use Canvas to enhance your workflows. Canvas lets you go beyond simple chat interactions. It provides a side-by-side workspace where you and ChatGPT can edit and refine text or code collaboratively. This makes brainstorming, drafting, and iterating as you write feel more natural and effective. As the first major update to ChatGPT’s visual interface since its launch in 2022, Canvas gives a new, innovative approach to collaboration with AI. For instance, after writing the first version of your code, Canvas can review it and give suggestions for improvement. It can also help with debugging by adding logging, identifying problems to fix, and writing comments. In addition, you'll also learn what it takes to train the model for an interface like Canvas. In this video-only short course, you’ll: - Learn how to ask for in-line feedback and control the iteration of your work by directly editing selected areas of your text or code from the model’s output. - Learn how to access quick automation tools in a shortcut menu that allows you to modify your writing tone and length, enhance your code, and restore previous versions of your work. - Learn how to use Canvas as a research assistant tool with an example of asking the model to reason through the screenshot of a plot to write a research report, in which you can ask questions within the created report. - Ask the model to write Python code to replicate the graph seen on a screenshot image. - Go behind the scenes of how you can create a video game, such as Space Battleship, from scratch, edit it, and display it in one self-contained HTML file. - Get a real-world application example of creating a SQL database from the image of its architecture. - Understand the model training and design processes that power Canvas! I’ve been testing Hy4 preview in WorkBuddy, and the most interesting part is not simply the model size, it’s how much practical work it can handle with a relatively focused active parameter count. Hy4 preview brings together stronger code understanding, generation, and editing; improved document and information processing; workflow automation; web and game development; cross-tool collaboration; and more reliable completion of complex, multi-step tasks. In other words, it is designed for work that requires planning, tool use, iteration, and follow-through, not just a quick answer in a chat window. Compared with its initial release, the current Hy4 preview is noticeably faster and better-performing in practical workflows. Following an upgrade released yesterday, it can complete tasks with fewer conversation rounds and lower token usage, while reasoning more quickly and making the overall user experience feel smoother from the first instruction to the final result. For my test, I gave it a demanding Three.js game-prototyping task with a 770B-parameter model and 49B active parameters. The result was more revealing than a simple first-look demo: Hy4 preview handled the core logic, edge cases, and follow-up changes while maintaining the broader context of the project. That combination of capability, speed, context, and active compute is what makes its cost-effectiveness worth examining. A fair evaluation should use the same prompt and environment configuration across models, changing only the model itself. That makes it easier to assess task completion, planning quality, tool-calling stability, reasoning speed, token efficiency, and performance over longer workflows without confusing the result with different settings. If you want to test the model yourself, access Hy4 preview through WorkBuddy and see how it performs on a real coding, document, automation, or creative task: Tencent Hy Tencent AI WorkBuddy

I asked Garry Tan how to use meta prompting to get better at AI: "My partners at YC Jared Friedman and Pete Koomen showed me how to do this. You can take almost anything that you do all the time and just drop it into a context window. And then say, “Here’s a bunch of inputs and outputs." And maybe you also add a bunch of notes. And then you tell it, “Write me a prompt that can act as an agent that takes this input and makes this output over here.” You can do this for almost any type of knowledge work. And you can even introspect. "What are things you notice that I did to convert this from the input to the output?”. And then you can just start using the prompt. Initially, it’s going to suck. Because it’s just not that smart yet. But what’s funny is now, I also use it to Iterate my writing. You can be very direct, "I would never say that", "Don’t say it like this", or "Oh, you used the long word there, use the short word". Just speak to it conversationally. And then when you're happy with the output, you can use that new output to make a new prompt. "Based on this conversation, give me a better initial prompt that incorporates all the things we talked about." And you can do this with literally everything. And in theory, there’s so much it applies to that people do day-to-day. You could use it for tweets. You could use it for editing podcasts. You can use it for pretty much everything. I have a folder of prompts that I use all the time. My YouTube prompt is on v27 or something. I'll go through this process with all the different max models. I'll use GPT 5.2 Pro. I’ll use Grok. I'll use Claude. Then, I’ll take all the outputs from all the models and put them into Claude and say "Here’s my prompt, here’s the output from four LLMs, including yourself. Rate each response and tell me what the pros and cons of each approach are." And I usually say "give it to me in numbered form". And then you can agree with one, disagree with two, tell it three is this or that. And then after that, you say given all of this, synthesize it."

We made a thing! Very happy to announce sqlcoder-pro and the Defog Alignment Platform. Available to use immediately without a wait-list, weights will be open-sourced very soon. The video does a quick show and tell comparison against ChatGPT (with gpt-4o). Read on for more details! TLDR 💪 equal (or better) performance on text-to-SQL as the most capable Claude-3.5 or GPT-4 models 🤝 You can use it today on a free plan/free trial, without a waitlist 🪽 self-hostable on a single RTX4090, with 2 second median generation times for SQL queries 🔁 exactly the same output every time, give the same prompt 👨🏻‍🏫 teachable and steerable: show the model what you want it to do 🛞 debuggable – you can understand WTF is going on inside the model, instead of treating it like a black box Let's dig into each of these one-by-one! Performance SQLCoder-8b-pro significantly exceeds the performance of our previous sqlcoder-8b model on Postgres text-to-SQL (from 88.2% to 90.2% accuracy - gpt-4o is at 87.6%, for reference). It is also better at following instructions. This was done via self-merges, hand crafted fine-tuning data, and adapting the training data to fit our tokenizer. Cost You can host this on the model on a single $3,500 RTX4090, and support ~5 requests/second via VLLM. If you're looking to host on the cloud instead, you can run it on a single L4 GPU that costs $300/mo on GCP Repeatability We have a dense 8b model with no MoE shenanigans. For the same prompt with temperature=0, you'll always get the same answer – which is critical in BI. Teachable In our alignment and feedback modes, you can give the model feedback on how it answered certain questions, and it will automatically adapt to the feedback. Debuggable You can use logprobs and attention scores to determine where, exactly is the model paying attention to inside a prompt + what it's getting confused by when generating outputs. Available today You can use Defog on the cloud today by going to docs[dot]defog[dot]ai, and getting an API key. Excited to hear what you think!
