String Theory is one of the few frameworks that tries to describe Quantum Physics and Gravity in the same mathematical language. In this animation, the glowing loop is the string, the shifting color along it represent its quantum vibration modes, and the surrounding fabric is a proxy for Spacetime responding. When you quantize a string, one of its vibration modes behaves like a graviton. Into the quantum realm we go with the brilliant Prineha Narang. Narang earned her PhD in applied physics at Caltech, taught materials science at Harvard and now has her own lab at UCLA. The lab focuses on quantum materials, non-equilibrium dynamics, photonics, quantum information science and other easily digestible areas. Beyond her academic career, Narang is a science advisor to the government and a venture capitalist at DCVC. As you might imagine, we get into quantum computing and quantum technology in this episode. Quantum vs. AI, the US vs. China, when quantum tech will break encryption, quantum sensing and whether or not quantum technology actually has a bright future. We held a Quantum Summit at the Governor’s mansion with leaders from across our state — our leadership is being recognized at the federal level with Colorado’s designation as a TechHub for quantum. We are proud of this significant recognition, which stemmed from a competitive national process, and we expect an equally successful Phase 2 application, unlocking up to $70 million in federal resources for the region. To further boost quantum technologies here in Colorado we’re excited to pursue legislation that will provide meaningful incentives to support Colorado as a leader in quantum.
