With PlayStation 6-related reporting circulating, a listener inquired how Sony may calibrate itself to compete with Xbox next-gen. My answer is: It's doubtful Sony continues to maintain focus on a competitor that has done such a continuously poor job of meaningfully showing up.

I love the Xbox brand (or what it used to be at least) but Sony shouldn’t do anything but worry about being the best version of Sony they can. That’s it They just need to improve what they do, offer more variety of gaming content, & make the ps6 an affordable monster

Sony’s biggest competitor is Nintendo, that’s who they need to focus on. PC is not a competitor really since they released on their anyways. Nintendo is the Goliath they gotta worry about

Basically predicting the death of console gaming with that one. One platform’s dominance spells doom for consumer friendly pricing on hardware. I do think as much as I love both platforms, this next gen is make it or break it for Xbox.

They need to focus on having people stay on their console rather than PC and Nintendo. Stop releasing on PC and cut down budgets for all but a few games so your ample amounts of studios can put stuff out every 3 years or so like Astrobot scale. Also get porting stuff that isn't available on modern consoles. Many games languishing on PS3 that could bolster your exclusive library

Colin I like your stuff but your takes about Xbox Cry Sony schill. Microsoft has done a good job and sometimes a not so good job but either way have earned their place in console gaming and for now looks like they’re here to stay. Sony on the other hand have brand recognition and with that has also come some not so friendly consumer behavior like launching the PS3 and 600 bucks and forcing their customers to pay for subscription services to play old games that most serious gamers have lying around somewhere. I can go on but I’m sure you already know all this stuff.

If PlayStation didn't care, they wouldn't be locking down exclusives deal that target Xbox specifically. If PS didn't care, Horizon would be on the Xbox and switch

NHK aired a dramatized documentary on the creation of PlayStation! Father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, went to Nintendo and made a deal to create a sound chip for the SNES that allowed for 8 sound channels instead of 3. After that they began to collaborate on a CD based add-on. But just as Sony were about to announce the partnership, Nintendo backed out at the last minute to go with Philips instead. Ken Kutaragi was shocked and furious. He said 99.9% of people in Sony wondered why Sony are trying to make games and tarnish the brand. However, in the following management meeting Ken Kutaragi stood up in front of then Sony CEO Norio Ohga and said “is our company the type to give up like this?” He proposed his plan to use Sony’s latest technology to create their own game console. Sony CEO Ohga responded “Then give it a try. Do it!” And the Sony PlayStation was born!

Brad Sam's, who specialises in Microsoft coverage, believes the timing of #Xbox substantially raising prices just before #PlayStation's annual Days of Play sale, was a very poor "self inflicted wound" and "dagger" from Sony. He believes Xbox didn't believe Sony would discount hardware, but that they should have waited till after the annual sale, just in case. Also that PlayStation was especially savvy after reports of them having stockpiled #PS5's ahead of tarriff increases and the Switch 2 launch. To me it's just another example of Xbox missing the mark on brand optics and strategy, and PlayStation once again being cut throat and steps ahead of their competition. There is a reason the gap is as wide as it is, and has been since the tail end of the 360 or more so the Xbox One. Even now, between the aggressive price discrepancies, PlayStation advertising tentpole Xbox games running better on their own hardware etc, they are digging the nail deeper and deeper.

While it's clear there's change afoot at #PlayStation, it's a shame we get such contextually limited takes and framing from pundits and journalists on news (Sony VP on moving away from hardware and the job listing). Thankfully there's outlets like Digital Foundry who are astute enough to parse context and provide more detailed analysis, while still acknowledging changes. This isn't to say PlayStation can't or won't eventually go everything day date multi-platform the way Xbox appears to be shifting, just that the actual context of the data, questions, answers, presentations etc do not yet point to that. Especially when as DF mentions, they are in conflict with the strategies outlined by PlayStation execs multiple times in the past, including very recently. Naturally, things can change, but current shifts still line up with the "experimental" and "very measured, very deliberate" multiplatform strategy SIE execs have spoken of, while still aiming to retain PlayStation console "differentiation".
