Sony originally planned to make a CD-ROM add-on for Nintendo's Super Famicom. After Nintendo cancelled the partnership, Sony used this experience to create PlayStation. I've designed a concept showing how their collaboration might have looked, with a switch to toggle SNES/PS.

I always said that if this project had been carried out, it would've been the best console of all time. Just imagine: the whole catalog of games that came out for PS1 would've been released for this console instead, plus the SNES catalog, plus part of the N64 games.

The SuperCD was a completely different concept than the PlayStation. There is one guy who is recreating it on the basis of photos of the prototype that surfaced some years ago.

So sorry PlayStation disk drive for Super Nintendo was going to be a thing and but Nintendo decided to go with Panasonic video at the last minute and that broke their agreement with Nintendo and phony decided to make the PlayStation instead and dominated the entire gaming Market

NHK aired a dramatized documentary on the creation of PlayStation! Father of PlayStation, Ken Kutaragi, went to Nintendo and made a deal to create a sound chip for the SNES that allowed for 8 sound channels instead of 3. After that they began to collaborate on a CD based add-on. But just as Sony were about to announce the partnership, Nintendo backed out at the last minute to go with Philips instead. Ken Kutaragi was shocked and furious. He said 99.9% of people in Sony wondered why Sony are trying to make games and tarnish the brand. However, in the following management meeting Ken Kutaragi stood up in front of then Sony CEO Norio Ohga and said “is our company the type to give up like this?” He proposed his plan to use Sony’s latest technology to create their own game console. Sony CEO Ohga responded “Then give it a try. Do it!” And the Sony PlayStation was born!

When Sony first announced that they were going to make a game console, I remember thinking, “Is that really possible?” At the time, Nintendo and Sega had already dominated the market for two generations, and NEC was also building a solid presence of its own. My biggest doubt was about first-party games. Even if they could build the hardware, it was hard to imagine a console succeeding without strong first-party titles. That’s why I always felt NEC was a step behind Sega and Nintendo. Now it’s already been over 30 years since the PlayStation launched—32 years this year—and I never would’ve imagined back then that it would rise to form a two-giant system alongside Nintendo. Looking back, there’s no doubt that Ken Kutaragi was an incredible figure for making PlayStation a reality. A lot of us have great memories with PlayStation, don’t we?

Straight wire! 🤯 Ends up that the recently dumped, mysterious SNES dev cart rom with a GameCube controller displayed on screen, is indeed a controller tester rom used to test LodgeNet controllers. I decompiled the rom and discovered that it was bit banging a custom controller protocol over the normal controller’s data and latch pins.
