The Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam #GERD recently welcomed visits from religious leaders and renowned athletes, highlighting its significance not just as a source of power but as a symbol of national pride, unity, and self reliance. Their visit underscores the monumental achievement of the Ethiopian people, who came together to make this dream a reality. Built entirely with the contributions of Ethiopians children, the elderly, the poor, and the rich alike the dam stands as a testament to the country’s determination and resilience. Despite immense pressure from Western powers favoring Egypt, Ethiopia made great sacrifices to complete this historic project. Ethiopia’s right to use its own resources and its fair share of the Abay (the Nile River) has long been undermined and misunderstood, as if Egypt owns the water a complete lie. Ethiopia contributes more than 85% of the Nile’s water through its rivers, yet it has historically been denied equitable access. GERD is a declaration of Ethiopia’s sovereignty and its rightful claim to utilize its resources for the benefit of its people. I am so glad to see that it’s finalized. How bitcoin mining can help achieve universal electrification in #Africa Africa faces a renewable energy paradox: underutilized capacity. While countries invest in large-scale renewable projects, transmission and distribution infrastructure often lag, leaving much of that energy stranded. Take Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as an example. With a capacity of 5,150 MW and an estimated annual generation of 16,153 GWh, GERD has the potential to transform the region’s energy landscape. However, QRB Labs estimates it could cost $8-10 billion to build the transmission and distribution lines needed to deliver this power to end users. Ethiopia is turning this challenge into an opportunity. By selling stranded renewable energy to Bitcoin miners, the country is generating critical cashflow to fund its energy infrastructure: • $55 million in revenue in just 10 months • Contribution of 2.25% of the global Bitcoin hash rate • Projected $123 million in revenue by 2025 It all began with QRB Labs, Ethiopia’s first and only locally owned Bitcoin mining operation. Their pioneering effort demonstrates how Bitcoin mining can monetize surplus power and finance the infrastructure needed for universal electrification. Its laboratory and research capabilities play a crucial role in disease prevention and in coordinating responses to epidemics and pandemics. This also presents a valuable opportunity for our health sector professionals to engage in continental research efforts and utilize its advanced laboratory facilities. For member states, it is incumbent upon us to strengthen this institution in collaboration with partners. Therefore, I call upon fellow African leaders to join efforts in establishing our continental public health agency as a premier institution, fully committed to advancing health across the continent.

FirstPost TV interview. Here’s a video highlighting the main topics I discussed: 1. Ethiopia’s recent elections. The successful completion of the elections is a big postive not only for Ethiopia but for Africa. Furthermore, it assures reforms will continue and sustained economic growth in the world’s 2nd fastest growing economy in 2026 (IMF). The elections were declared free and fair by international observers including the African Union (AU). 2. Ethiopia’s right to regain its own direct unfettered access to the sea. In my view it was a historical mistake that made Ethiopia landlocked. Ethiopia is the world’s 10th most populous country with 135 million people and amongst the 5 largest economies in Africa with a GDP of US$556 billion (PPP). 3. The US$5.0 billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), is already completed and fully operational. It’s a hydro electric power dam (not an irrigation dam) which does not divert or reduce water flow to Egypt. If there are water flow concerns, they can be addressed by highly qualified technical experts from Egypt and Ethiopia, as has been done continuously. The GERD provides electricity to millions across Eastern Africa who previously lived in absolute darkness and is a clean, green renewable energy source which is environmental friendly. I held a constructive bilateral meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin to further strengthen the political and economic ties between our two countries. We agreed to expand cooperation in clean energy, FDI, fertilizer production, and regional security issues. Ethiopia and Germany enjoy close cooperation on matters of climate change, energy, education, regional peace and security.
