Brian De Palma is usually known for big, operatic set pieces, but in Scarface he opens on a simple close-up of Al Pacino’s face. He later explained why... "I think the most stunning thing about Al is his face. He's the kind of guy that can hold the screen with his face. When you start a movie, you sort of want to give the lead character a very impressive entrance. And that face, that character, the crazy shirt he's wearing, the scar, the way he moves, the way he talks; you just want to really hit them because you're hitting them with something they've never seen before. A lot of this had been reported on the news, but nobody had ever seen it in a movie before. You see these Cuban gangsters and the way they talked, the way they moved. And he just sort of embodied that in that close-up."

Quentin Taratino said Lawrence Fishburne’s performance in King of New York was so incredible he thought - “he could be the greatest actor of his generation”. He explains: "As great as Christopher Walken is in this movie. To me, it's Larry Fishburne's movie - it was the rock that becomes a diamond aspect of the movie. It's why I could defend this movie against all comers, because to me, Fish's performance in this movie was comparable to a young Brando. It was the most exciting performance by an actor of his generation that I'd seen in a movie of that time. And I thought, well, that's it. There is a new Marlon Brando, and his name is Larry Fishburne - it was amazing, it was mesmerizing… He is the first hip hop gangster in movie history. That character had never been done before this. He invented that character. And he invented it as something to do. It wasn't in the original script. He came up with that himself… The three big Fishburne moments to me, is his opening sequence with…Tito. That's it, with Tito - black glove dude. And his reunion with Frank. And then it's the chicken scene (see below). Those are his three big arias. Not only that though - expressions that I would later hear for the rest of the decade, I actually heard for the first time in that scene. I'd never heard the expression; “I'll slap the black off you” before. That was the first time I heard it when Fish says it to Snipes. I've since heard it many times… And that was actually the first time I ever heard, “fuck you very much”. And I would proceed to hear that for the rest of the 90s. This man keeps getting criticized about the grass g wording at the property line divider of his neighbor. Normally when he cuts the divider’s grass, he will only cut and treat half of it. He feels it’s his neighbor’s responsibility too and he shouldn’t have to cut the whole thing every time. It should be noted that when the neighbor cuts it, they cut the whole thing. Is he just being petty or lazy by not just cutting the whole thing, what would you do in this situation?

This is the simplest way to understand square roots… and somehow most of us were never taught it. Instead of just memorizing that the square root of 9 is 3 because “3 times 3 equals 9,” this guy shows it visually. He draws dots in the shape of a square and explains that the square root is simply the length of one side of that square. Why didn’t they teach it like this when we were in school? It makes so much more sense when you can actually see it. Would you have understood square roots better if they were taught this way?

This scene feels even more tragic now going into a far darker and bloodier season. This was Viserys' final desperate attempt to reunite his family and preserve peace, and in that moment, he genuinely believed he had succeeded. Yes, he shares part of the blame for the Dance… but what makes this heartbreaking is how he is completely convinced that everything is finally held together, right before it all inevitably falls apart. Paddy Considine sold this scene perfectly, and it's IMO one of the most beautiful and wholesome moments in the entire GOT universe.
