During tributes today in House of Lords to Ann Widdecombe I paid tribute to her principles, kindness and intelligence - grounded in her Faith and Patriotism. From different political traditions we celebrated when we agreed and when we disagreed we respectfully learned to handle differences without rancour. Ann became a great friend and was Godmother to one of my children. In the House of Commons she and Sir David Amess became close friends. I am deeply shocked that both have been murdered. I hope that justice will now prevail and that in a toxic climate of hatred and hate speech we will learn the importance of respecting difference. Watch tributes in full:

The Free Speech Union has said that, should Heather Herbert join the Free Speech Union, we would do our best to help him. Heather Herbert posted a vile and deeply offensive statement on the social media platform BlueSky about the tragic murder of Ann Widdecombe. The University of Aberdeen employee has now been arrested and charged over his offensive comments. While the Free Speech Union does not support Heather’s offensive comments about Ann — a dear late friend of the FSU — it is not an offence, no matter how offensive, to speak ill of the dead. Ann was a staunch defender of our fundamental right to free speech, and we very much doubt she would have supported Police Scotland’s actions. Police Scotland has a poor record when it comes to recognising citizens’ rights to free speech. If Heather has been charged with a speech offence, the Free Speech Union is here to help. My last speech this term, asking for some perspective in a mini-moral panic debate which called for yet more state intervention to stop young people gambling. I couldn't resist calling out the misuse of stats and the conflation of children and young adults. I was not at all popular in a rather puritan group of Lords. No change there. Oh well, a Westminster-free summer beckons. Phew.

I was sorry to miss the House of Commons paying tribute to my friend and colleague Ann Widdecombe. Unfortunately, at the same time, I was speaking in Westminster Hall in a debate on illegal migration and offshore deportation centres. It would be easy to stay quiet right now. Recent events have had a profound effect on us all. But that is not what Reform is about, and Ann would have been the first to say so. She never stayed silent in the face of threats. She spoke up and raised the subjects others were too frightened to confront. So that is what I did today.

Yesterday in the House of Lords I opened a debate on the costs of renewable energy. My speech (15 minutes) is here. If you'd rather read it, the link is below. 👇 I set out my concerns about the costs of renewables in some detail. As I noted concluding the debate, unfortunately few of the proponents of net zero engaged with these numbers, preferring to appeal to authority, or just to assert that we needed to decarbonise whatever the costs. This may be the first time we have debated the costs of renewables, but I am confident it will not be the last.

Fair play to Neil Shastri-Hurst, one of Kim Leadbeater’s strongest allies, who now says this: “It’s absolutely right that the great strength of the House of Lords is that you’ve got expertise in there, and they are the scrutinising chamber. And of course Tanni’s right, this is a private member’s bill, there’s no convention that says it has to be passed… “There will be ill-feeling if it doesn’t get through, by some sectors, and I think we have to recognise that. But if the House of Lords feel the haven’t had sufficient time to scrutinise it then we have to respect what they do.” Iain Dale: “You voted for it?” NSH: “I voted for it, I will be disappointed if it doesn’t become law. But I also recognise the importance of respecting the House of Lords and the role that they take. I don’t think those are necessarily contradictory points. I may disagree with some of the points that are being made up there, but that’s the purpose of debate.”

I think we should be extremely concerned about anything that undermines the First Amendment... We must protect free speech, and free speech is only relevant when it's someone you don't like saying something you don't like because, obviously, free speech that you like is easy. The thing about censorship is that for those who would advocate it, just remember at some point that will be turned on you."

The judgment in the case of the University of Sussex vs the Office for Students is deeply disappointing. It not only overturns the OfS fine over failures to uphold free speech in the Kathleen Stock case — it also risks rendering the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act toothless. The consequence? More academics will be left exposed to the kind of vile treatment Kathleen Stock endured. We hope the OfS will challenge this judgement. If they do, the Free Speech Union will seek to intervene. Most alarming has been the triumphalist reaction from some university leaders — many of whom appear to hate the free speech duties under Hefsa. This judgment will be seen by them as a green light to ignore violations with impunity. The toxic culture of cancellation on campus is still alive and kicking. The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, must now stick to her word — and urgently implement the complaints scheme promised under Hefsa. This scheme would give academics and visiting speakers a free route to defend their right to free speech. There can be no more delay. Please watch Baroness Kidron's speech in the House of Lords yesterday. A perfect summary of the theft at the heart of AI training, and the importance of commonsense legislation that holds AI companies to account. To pull out two passages in particular: "The language of AI - scraping, training data, modules, LLMs - does not evoke the full picture of what is being done. AI corporations - many of which are seeking to entrench their existing information monopolies - are not stealing nameless data. They are stealing some of the UK's most valuable cultural and economic assets." "My Lords, whatever your party allegiance is, I ask you to make clear to the 2.4 million people who make up the creative industries, to their dependents, to the would-be creatives of the future, and to the citizens of the UK that enjoy and benefit from their creativity, that their property, their labour, is worthy of your protection - because apart from anything else, it is not ours to give away." The Lords defeated the government by 272 to 125 votes 🙌

General Secretary of the Free Speech Union, Lord Young of Acton, asked the Justice Minister in the House of Lords to guarantee that at least people accused of speech crimes have a right to a jury trial, which is such an important bulwark of free speech. She declined. Trial by jury is a cornerstone of English liberty — especially free speech. David Lammy’s plans amount to the biggest assault on our liberty in 800 years. If the Government were serious about reducing delays and the court backlog, they’d stop creating so many new criminal offences -- 65 in the Crime and Courts Bill alone. If Lammy gets his way and jury trials are scrapped, you’re far more likely to be banged up for hurty words. We cannot let this happen.
