Max Levchin explains why B-players hire C-players The co-founder of PayPal and Affirm reflects on the famous Steve Jobs insight that A-players hire A-players, and B-players hire C-players: “It’s profoundly true. But there should be an asterisk explaining why this is true. And the reason for this is fear.” A-players love working with other A-players because they know it will make them better. They want other A-players who challenge them and will tell them when their work isn’t good. Most B-players are net positive too, but as Max argues, some are fearful and will say: “If I have too many B-players or A-players around, I will look terrible and it’ll be very obvious that I’m just not that good. So the way to fix this is for me to become a manager and hire a bunch of people who aren’t very good at all so that I’ll look like the tallest mushroom.” Max continues: “That is the real danger of B-players. SIMPLE CUES ON DEFENSE It’s so funny, these are cues that I use with the young players that I coach and develop. So they are meant to be simple. There will be players/coaches/trainers/parents at higher levels that look at this video and think it’s dumb, or too basic. Yet when I watch bad defensive players/teams at the Pro/College/HS level … they can’t keep players in front, are late in rotations, and don’t finish possessions with rebounds. So idk, maybe this is just for youth players, or maybe it’s for everyone 🤷‍♂️

Here’s the full series highlights from this series. Pay attention. Defenses were allowed to be all up on you. Defenders like Shane Battier were All Defense level players with great length and defensive ability. Ron Artest as well. The paint is packed. And there isn’t 2-4 players on the court at all times that will jack up a 3 so the perimeter and the paint is all packed. You have to be elite. You have to be the BEST to score on this. You have to be an elite shooter that can be effective in a small space. That can make a shot with a hand in the face. That can shoot off angles and off balance. Can’t you see? I give Jordan the edge because of his freakish athletic ability. But this man Kobe Bryant mastered the skill of the game. When players like Reggie Miller says that Kobe was Jordan but took it to another level because of Kobe’s jump shooting, THIS IS WHAT HE WAS REFERRING TO.

The cameras backstage at the tournament… I know you got filmed recently forgetting your credential… you’re sort of always on camera at a lot of different tournament areas.. I’m wondering if you think there should be more privacy for players and their teams as they’re back there? Or how you see the balance of that versus them trying to have entertainment and content coming out.” Iga: “The question is, are we tennis players? Or are we animals in the zoo? Where they are observed even when they’re pooping. Ok, that was exaggerating obviously, but it would be nice to have some privacy. It would be nice also to have your own process and not always be observed. For example, in other sports, you have some technical things you wanna do. It would be nice to have some space you can do that without the whole world watching. On Wimbledon there are courts where people with accreditation can get there but it’s without the fans. There are some tournaments where it’s impossible and you’re constantly observed. I don’t think it should be like that because we are tennis players. We’re meant to be watched on court and in the press. That’s our job. It’s not our job to be a meme when you forget your accreditation. It’s funny for sure. People have something to talk about. Playing time is the ultimate motivator Every program has their non negotiables, and within the program each player has a certain role that they need to crush. A lot of players and parents struggle with the idea that you don’t get unlimited mistakes and chances. At some point, if you aren’t producing, you won’t be able to play. This will happen to 95% of players.. whether it’s for a couple possessions, for a couple games, or for a season. The real tell is the players ability to learn from it and grow!

The key to installing a PBO is to keep the main thing the main thing. Explain to your players the most important principles of play and continuously emphasize them throughout the season. These principles will become a constraint or a guide that will get their attention and intentions. Players will self-organize with tasks (constraints) and if you allow them to complete these tasks, you will see them playing great team offense. You don’t need to explain every last detail, just get them started with the basics of shot selection, spacing, ball movement, creating advantages with matchups or 2-man game, and off-ball picking. Using constraints like an 8-9 second shot clock on a side will get them to flip the field. Or, if you’re not picking off-ball it’s a turnover. Or if you hang out on the crease it’s a turnover. These are simple ways to get your team to play incredible and unpredictable team offense. Obviously, installing a PBO in one minute isn’t going to be a time constraint for your average coach, but the point of this reel is you would be amazed at how well your team will play when you take off the reigns and focus on the principles. Throughout the season there will be glaring strengths and weaknesses that you will have to address, but again, use constraints to do the teaching and keep the focus on the Principles.
