Death (and birth) used to be an extended family thing. This modern idea of putting the elderly out of sight as if they were inconveniences is beyond unholy. There is no excuse for this, since no job or money should supersede love, care, compassion - and the feeling of helplessness and worry. Nobody is equipped to have a baby or take care of the elderly; it comes on the road... ...no career or status can be more important than taking care of loved ones, however inconvenient it might be.

This is why I resigned from the fire dept. after my dad died and moved back home to take care of my mother. Abuse like this is common and I wouldn't have been able to bear it happening to my mom.
