Pinal County Sheriff Ross Teeple announced Wednesday his department will not renew its contract with automated license plate reader vendor Flock Safety, letting the deal lapse at the end of September over Fourth Amendment privacy concerns. "The only way to stop this mass surveillance system, and the government’s involvement in it, is to stop our cities from signing away our rights through these contracts," said Nathan Taylortaft, co-director of East Valley Unite, the organization spearheading the campaign against ALPRs in Chandler. "Proponents of Flock will argue that we are on the side of crime, but it’s the opposite. Crime is being committed through Flock’s system, and we want that system ended through city ordinances, and laws protecting our privacy."

Man claims to have taken down every Flock camera in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, moments before he was arrested. In a video shared on social media, Jevon Martinez said he was on his way to dropping off all the cameras at the sheriff's office. ALERT: Vigilantes go on a rampage, destroying FLOCK cameras in a quiet Northern California county. Marcus Bee, 40, was one of the alleged suspects and was seen destroying 3 of the Flock cameras and even ramming one with his truck in Monterey County. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office arrested Bee on suspicion of felony vandalism and set his bail at $30,000. Seaside police have stated that 2 cameras were also destroyed and believe it is a targeted incident. “There’s more than just vandalism alone. Lumpkin County, GA sheriff who offered $1000 reward for info on broken Flock camera shifts tone after backlash ----- It's good that he's starting to see our side more but he clearly doesn't go far enough. Now he wants to "regulate" the cameras more. Perhaps with continued pushback he'll finally see all of the light and agree to ban them.

Today, I am urging our Commission to prohibit the use of Flock cameras and similar devices in our County. For those of you who don't know, these cameras, technically called Automated License Plate Readers, are motion activated and take a picture of every car which passes by. While License Plate Readers have been around for a while, because of AI and vastly increased networking and data retention capacities, these Flock cameras have capabilities not even imagined in the past. Older cameras only took a photo of your license plate, which was then retained for a short time. Flock cameras take a photo of your place, but also use AI to catalogue distinguishing features of your vehicle: make, color, model, even bumper stickers. That data is stored in a searchable database for sometimes up to a month or more, depending on the policies of that particular agency. When these cameras are deployed in large numbers, they create a network that can be used to track your movements. Currently, there is no federal regulatory framework governing these devices in place, and the Tennessee laws regulating them were written over a decade ago. My fear is that may be inadvertantly creating a warrantless mass surveillance system and undermining the privacy and Liberty of our people. So I urge the Tennessee General Assembly and the United States Congress to look at this issue and take neccessary action to safeguard our privacy and civil liberties as these new technologies continue to emerge. Why are there license plate readers sitting at the crossroads of a wildlife management area? Who are they watching? The hunters? People exercising their Second Amendment rights? Families going camping? Fishermen headed to a boat ramp? Because it isn't just here” “But here's the question that no one seems willing to ask: How much surveillance are we willing to accept? For decades, law enforcement investigated crimes without building massive networks of cameras that record the movements of millions of law-abiding Americans” I have ferried these cameras are indeed there, and there is literally nothing around the area They were installed by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office which has also deployed dozens of Flock cameras across the county. From what I can find, over 40 installed on county roads Law enforcement says there are here for - Recovering stolen vehicles - Tracking suspects - Solving crimes in these rural areas - General public safety They look like unnecessary surveillance.
