Young progressives are standing up and fighting for a better future. I support them. They should fight back. Their generation has been left to graduate off a cliff! Millions have landed in a harsh world with too much college debt and too few jobs. The Democratic Party should get... behind all their positive proposals and demands — like affordable housing, Medicare for all, climate solutions, all the good things. But every wild notion does not merit our support — just because someone says it’s “progressive.” For example: we desperately need criminal justice reform — but it’s nutty to say we want “no police, no prisons, no borders.” Generationally, it may be time for a “changing of the guard.” But that doesn’t mean we must swear allegiance to unfit candidates with backwards ideas like Darializa Avila Chevalier. This is a person who supports terrorists; opposes interracial marriages; and thinks America shouldn’t deport rapists or murderers. 😳 Progressives: we need change, but we can’t throw “common sense” out the window. The GOP stopped calling BS on all kinds of obvious foolishness — and look at what a clown show that party turned into. They are NOT the same thing. And the difference matters. Some defend the far left by claiming they only want Nordic-style social democracy. If that were true, I might applaud them. I want those policies, too! But what does universal healthcare have to do with Hamas? With abolishing all law enforcement? With erasing all borders? With treating every wealthy person as a villain? Ideas matter. And these are terrible ideas. Right now, extremists are trying to sneak backwards proposals into our party, hoping mainstream Democrats are too frustrated with MAGA and the Democratic Party establishment to notice. Where does Northern Ireland fit into all of this? It's clearer than ever to me that while people are talking about Reform the party, we need Reform of Stormont. We don't know what the future holds, but one thing is certain, we need to guard against all eventualities and the last thing we want is to be without a devolved government. I mentioned this on #TV3GH a few weeks ago. The NDC still think we are in 1992, they have no credible altenative for the people. I’m glad that Rupert Lowe MP has decided to set up his own political party separate from Advance and that it looks like we’ll get it in early March. If terms can be reached to merge and migrate members over that’s great but we need to be led by Rupert and his team and not by Ben and his team. Frankly I don’t think Ben should have much of a role. It also has to be very clear that we do not welcome Tommy Robinson or his crew of grifters and that this new party is not a neoliberal Thatcherite party like Reform. We need a party led by Rupert that promotes a handful of potential successors e.g. Bardella in France because we have to eliminate the key man risk as soon as possible. This new party can’t be open to accusations that we are Reform 2.0. It has to be something demonstrably different. I don’t want any donations to be taken from foreigners or their descendants, I don’t want any foreign lobbying efforts to infiltrate the party, I don’t want any former Tories or Reform MP’s, and I want a huge focus on policy. We have to be publishing policy papers within months that are detailed and that we can put on the desks of Permanent Secretary’s and tell them to get to work. We need a shadow Cabinet of 6-8 people quite quickly to be expanded over time. We need a completely novel media strategy that includes vlog style content so people can see what we’re up to and take control out of the MSM’s hands and back into our own. Above all we need to be ready to fight a general election by summer 2027 in case Labour collapses and we should expect a summer 2028 election as the base case. Be ready for then so that any extra time is a bonus. Finally, we have to have a plan. A plan is different to policies. A plan sets out an order of priorities and what we are going to do first. For example, if we are to leave the ECHR that is going to drag on for years at huge political cost so we have to explore how we can operate within the ECHR to maximise short term effectiveness. Another example is net zero. You can’t just end net zero overnight because projects are approved years, even up to a decade, in advance. So we have to level with the public that net zero will be reversed but that the full benefits will take time to materialise. But in the short term we can do things to help families like lift carbon taxes and reform how we price and source energy e.g. I’d reopen our markets to Russian energy. The key differentiator above all with Reform is that they are a controlled opposition clown show and we are a party preparing seriously to govern. Candidates must be chosen on experience and ability rather than celebrity but we also need to breed new talent from millennials and Gen-Z whose hearts are full of radical fervour. It’s going to be unbelievably tough, but it’s also going to be great fun. Let’s go!

I got a lot on my mind… We need to have real conversation on the left about many many things including why we continued to give Graham Platner multiple passes and look the other way despite all kinds of allegations since October. This is not just about dropping out the race. Yes he should do that. AND, we need a bigger conversation.
