Your baby doesn’t just love looking at your face - they STUDY it. Eye tracking research suggests that babies focus their attention on two areas of special interest: the eyes and the mouth. Caregivers’ eyes are a particular focus in early infancy - and tell a story about your... emotional state (and hence baby’s sense of safety and wellbeing), attentiveness, and more. But as your baby’s interest in language grows, your mouth becomes the main attraction. Your baby watches it with keen interest, working to decipher just how you make all of those amazing sounds. I’ve written often about reading with your baby, noting that - at the very earliest stages - it’s okay to start small (a minute or less) and not to get too discouraged if your baby spends more time attending to your face than the book itself… Or even expresses greater interest in chewing on a board book than reading it. But today let’s see the flip side of this coin! I couldn’t help but be taken by just how engaged this little guy is with the book dad is sharing - his eyes wide and laser focused and his face lighting up with delight over the surprises revealed on every page. (Accentuated, of course, by his father’s melodic and enthusiastic narration.) It’s not where all children begin (so, again, don’t be discouraged if your baby doesn’t react with the same initial interest and enthusiasm) but it sure is fun to see. Let’s talk about language-rich environments. One of the determining factors in both the speed at which your child develops language and the size of his/her early vocabulary is exposure to (direct & interactive) caregiver speech. Even before your baby is using language conventionally, he/she is soaking up all of yours. (And I do mean ALL… keep it G-rated.) One way to support your baby’s language/brain development is to narrate your life together. (Engage your child by talking about the steps you’re taking as you fold the laundry, for example. Or describe what you’ve received as you sort through the mail.) This grandpa gets a gold star here - not only narrating, but turning the simple act of rolling a ball back and forth into a thrilling TV sports play-by-play that includes the baby’s name and actions over and over. What a lucky little guy to be so immersed in language. He’ll be better off for it… just you wait and see! But I’ve rarely run across a better video example than this lovely moment shared to IG by seanandcaitlin. Watch this back and forth closely. Am I reading with my baby too soon? (Spoiler alert: No. Never.) A parent recently reached out with this very question, noting that her infant often seems more focused on her during reading time than on the books themselves. Perhaps she was just introducing them too early? In reality, it’s never too early. But it’s also important to realize that, in the earliest months of life, the goal of reading isn’t about your child attending to the text - or even to the illustrations. Reading with your infant is a social activity. It is an opportunity for bonding. It’s an opportunity to expose your little one to rich and varied vocabulary. If your baby spends the whole time looking at you, that’s just fine. In fact, it’s beneficial. As you read, your baby is attuned to the way your mouth is making all these amazing sounds. Watch this little one closely. Her eyes rarely leave big brother’s face. I can’t say with certainty that she even glances at the book itself. But we’d be hard pressed to suggest she isn’t eating the experience up! She knows from repeated readings that this particular book (“Moo, Baa, La-la-la!” by Sandra Boynton - who is, BTW, the patron saint of board books) is filled with new and unusual sounds - which she anticipates (and delights in) on every page. I do not understand this fantasy of making someone constantly happy. You are a grown woman. Your emotional state is your responsibility. If you need a handler to regulate your happiness, then that is your weakness, not his failure. Every time I hear the word “provider” thrown at a man, I ask the obvious question: Provide what exactly, and how much is enough? A roof? Money? Attention? Validation? Endless reassurance? At what point does it stop—or does it ever? This woman sits there waiting for a man to manufacture her happiness like he is a factory and she is entitled to the product. As if she is incapable of building a life she enjoys without outsourcing her emotional stability. She wants joy delivered on a silver platter and calls it love. That is not love. That is dependency dressed up as romance. If you cannot create your own happiness, you are not looking for a partner. You are looking for a caretaker.
