Did you know? Your calf has a muscle that helps pump blood back to your heart. It’s called the soleus, and it’s part of your peripheral heart. When it contracts, it squeezes the deep veins in your calf and pushes blood up against gravity. Valves stop it falling back. But if you sit still all day, this pump sits idle while blood pools in your legs. Mind you, standing calf raises won't fully challenge it. With the knee straight, the gastrocnemius (the muscle on the surface) is free to share the load, because it crosses the knee. So the soleus always gets help and never works at its limit. But if you bend the knee, that flips. A bent knee shortens the gastrocnemius until it goes slack and can barely produce force. Also called ‘active insufficiency’ in exercise science, where a two-joint muscle, shortened at one end, drops out of the movement. So the gastroc switches off, and the soleus, which only crosses the ankle, has to carry the whole thing on its own. That's why the best way to hit it is a bent knee: seated calf raises, or this deep squat version. It’s nearly 80% slow-twitch, so it loves volume and barely fatigues. Start with whole foods and limit ultra-processed foods. Combine aerobic exercise with strength training. Take a 10-minute walk after meals to help keep blood sugar under control. Prioritize sleep, manage stress, avoid smoking, and monitor your blood pressure. And do not assume that looking healthy means you know your risk. Go beyond the standard cholesterol panel. Ask your healthcare provider about ApoB, Lp(a), hemoglobin A1c, and fasting insulin. Check your blood pressure at home, track your waist-to-height ratio, and follow these numbers over time. The ventricle Is such a complex structure that we are learning more and more about. One thing that has helped us understand this complex structure is strain imaging and 3D echocardiography. We have learned that the ventricle contracts in 4 ways: contraction (radial) motion but it also has a twisting (torsional and circumferential) and shortening (longitudinal) motion. . . . 👐🏽The surgeon I always work with often described the hearts motion as “wringing of a towel.” This can be seen in the video above. The understanding of the multiple different motions of the heart has allowed us to better understand intrinsic myocardial disease and pick up disease earlier in its process allowing us to add disease modifying agents to slow and sometimes reverse the negative remodeling of the heart. . . . 💓So next time you think of your heart pumping don’t think of it in one motion (squeeze) but rather a Towel being wrung of water. Horrible scenes are unfolding - Syrian Government Forces have been deployed but they appear to be unwilling/unable to stop the violence in this neighbourhood of Homs. The attackers - predominantly from the Bani Khalid tribe are attacking Alawites and their properties randomly in response to an alleged sectarian attack on a Sunni-Arab husband and wife from the Bani Khalid tribe yesterday night - they were attacked and killed in their home and *Bani Ummaya dogs,Ya Hussein* was written with blood on their bathroom wall. The husband and wife are said to be working for the Syrian ministry of interior. This is one of my favorite views (because it’s pretty easy to get) and can help you assess multiple structures in a pinch. . . To obtain this view put your probe on the 3rd-4th rib space with the probe marker facing the right shoulder. From there you can make a quick adjustment (turning the probe marker to the left shoulder) to get the parasternal short axis view (PSAX). Both of these views are great for assessment of wall thickness, the mitral valve, as well as for effusions (among many other things). . . . When Danger Whispers Before It Screams: Eclampsia, and the Women We Are Still Losing Dear Women and Men, My dearies, no pregnant woman should convulse before we care, and this is not poetry, this is policy, this is science, this is humanity. When I watched that video, a woman convulsing in pregnancy, I felt my heart splinter, just a little, because I have stood in that room before, and I have fought that fight, and I have watched a shaking body argue with death. It is never sudden. It only looks sudden to those who arrive at the last sentence without reading the earlier chapters. That lifeless stare, that chaos of limbs, that trembling cry, it is the final paragraph of a story that could have been rewritten much earlier, and much more gently. We call it eclampsia, a name that sounds almost elegant, and yet it is one of pregnancy’s most ruthless murderers. It is what happens when blood pressure rises and rises, and then decides it wants more, more damage, more danger, more destruction. The brain rebels, the liver strains, the kidneys falter, and the woman, the woman who is carrying life, begins to lose herself. Sometimes it announces itself with blurred vision, and sometimes with swelling feet we excuse, and sometimes with a headache that drums and drums and refuses to be ignored. "Jesus was not murdered but died voluntarily for your sins" In short, without Jesus' death on the cross for our sins, none of us would have eternal life. Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" ( John 14:6 ). With this statement, Jesus explains the reason for His birth, death, and resurrection—to pave the way to heaven for sinful humanity, who could never reach it on their own. When God created Adam and Eve, they were perfect in every way and truly lived in a paradise, the Garden of Eden ( Genesis 2:15 ). God created humanity in His image, meaning that humans also had the freedom to make their own decisions and choices. Genesis 3 then describes how Adam and Eve succumbed to Satan's temptations and lies. In doing so, they disobeyed God's will by eating from the tree of knowledge, which they were forbidden: “And he [God] commanded him [Adam], ‘You may freely eat of every tree in the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you must not eat of it, for when you eat of it you will surely die’” ( Genesis 2:16-17 ). This was the first sin committed by man, and as a result, all people—because of the sinful nature inherited from Adam—are subject to not only physical death but also an eternal, spiritual death. God declared that all who sin will die, both physically and spiritually. This is the fate of all humanity. But in His grace and mercy, God provided a way out of this dilemma in the form of the blood of His perfect Son shed on the cross. God declared, “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” ( Hebrews 9:22 ), but through the shedding of blood, redemption is obtained. The Law of Moses ( Exodus 20:2-17 ) provided a way for people to be considered “sinless” or “righteous” in God’s sight—the offering of animals sacrificed for sin. But these sacrifices were only temporary, and were actually a foreshadowing of Christ’s perfect sacrifice, offered once for all on the cross ( Hebrews 10:10 ). This is why Jesus came and why He died: to become the ultimate and final sacrifice, the perfect offering for our sins ( Colossians 1:22 ; 1 Peter 1:19 ). Through Him, the promise of eternal life with God is made effective through faith for those who believe in Jesus “so that the promise might be given through faith in Jesus Christ to those who believe” ( Galatians 3:22) .These two words, "faith" and "trust," are essential to our salvation. Through our faith in the shed blood of Christ for our sins, we receive eternal life. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast" ( Ephesians 2:8-9 ).
