Naval Ravikant on the importance of hiring high-agency people Naval defines agency as: “People who just solve problems without even being asked to solve the problem—they identify the problem, they go solve it, they don’t even necessarily have to update you every step of the way, they’re not asking silly questions, and they’re just coming up with solutions.” He believes this is important because “building a startup is an infinite set of problems that are being thrown at you.” And there comes a day where you can’t even look at every problem your company is facing—let alone solve every one of them. He cites the Vinod Khosla aphorism: "The team you build is the company you build, not the plan you make.” And your ability to solve problems is based entirely on how many problem-solvers you have at your company. Leadership is a transfer of belief. Positive leaders transfer their belief to their team and as a result they accomplish more than they ever thought possible. Remember, if you don’t have it, you can’t share it, so each day you need to feed yourself with positivity, optimism and belief in order to feed others. Ask yourself what could your team accomplish if they knew you believed in them? What could they accomplish if they believed in themselves? How do you share your belief with your team?

This is one of my favorite speeches of all time… It always hits me hard: “You get up every day—you’re entitled to nothing. Nobody owes you nothing. You could have talent, but if you don’t have discipline, and you don’t execute, you don’t focus… What do you get? Nothing. If you’re complacent and not paying attention to detail… What does that get you? Nothing. So nothing is acceptable but your best.” This is a harsh reality of life: Talent is meaningless without discipline. Ambition is worthless without execution. Focus is the difference between potential and reality. You’re not entitled to success—it’s earned in the quiet, thankless moments when no one is watching. The antidote to entitlement is relentless ownership. Show up fully. Pay attention to the details. Do your best—every single day. Because in a world where everyone wants the reward, it’s those who refuse to accept anything less than their best who build something worth being proud of.
