You're looking at the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne, a heavily armed experimental attack helicopter that first flew in 1967. Only 10 were built before the program was cancelled in 1972. (We just couldn't resist adding the music.)

famously cancelled to pour money into this top secret project

Could have so had it's grandchild.

Thanks for the 1990's flashback "Wings!" trigger warning. 😁😁😁

Back when the Army thought maneuvering armed helicopters were the future, before deciding the in combined arms warfare in the Cold War... hover holds were more survivable so just make the replacement AH-64 Apache carry as many guided anti-tank missiles (from out of ZSU-23-4 range) and hardened. Marine Corps still saw (sees) armed helicopters as assault helicopter escorts and stayed in the twin-engine AH-1 family to this day.

@ChipDowning I knew what music would play even before clicking. Awesome soundtrack!
Did the video came to you so perfectly cut for the music or did you have to cut it? (Because damn right it was the right movie choice)

We cut and shuffled a lot of the shots from a larger video. The music ended up fitting nicely over our edit.

The only correct music. Took me right back to Saturday evening ITV (1984?)

Is it me or does it resemble a Russian Hind 🤔

Watching it I could swear that I caught the front pilot seat turn. That had to be an interesting design.

While neat this was seriously going to be a piece of junk operationally. Single engine and a bunch of elaborate analog fire control gear that depends on big beryllium mirrors for sighting. To match what the Apache did it'd need total system replacement and a new drivetrain.

Its demise was due to a number of factors. The Army had an inter-service rivalry with the Air Force regarding the Close Air Support Role. The Cheyenne, while technically advanced had no all weather capability. Rotor issues, including a fatal crash. Cost. $4.0 million per helo.

Whats the music from?

The MIDI music gives Tyrian vibes. Cool!

Is was a bit beyond experimental. It was a pre-production demonstration program by the time of cancelation.

Lockheed smoking that good stuff as always. I love just the concept of the Cheyenne. We need it to go fast? Well give it a push prop!

Didn't realize it had a Last Starfighter like rotating gunner's seat

Needs “Flight of the Valkyries”

American Hind...

Great post but I think “Flight of the Valkyries” would have been a better song choice.

Now do The Comanche!

That thing looks straight outta a movie 😎🚁🔥

Trivia: Airwolf was a modified Bell 222, a commercial business helicopter.

Wait did that gunner's sear just rotate???!😳

This heli is coming on war thunder along side the xf5u flying pancake

Saw one at Ft. Polk in the museum, I don’t know if it’s still there though.

The music was a nice touch.

I believe they did some testing of this here in Yuma Arizona.

American take on Mi 24 Hind

believe that had a rigid-rotor system @RWMann @Shwag92

Aka the dragonfly... 😅

Girodino and inverted tail. That's new

Awesome !!

😜
