🟣The legendary Christiane Christiane Amanpour did the Lord’s work in this foreboding 2018 CNN interview. In it, she asked Mr Mnangagwa whether he believed Robert Mugabe had stayed in power too long. Almost prophetically, she further asked whether Mnangagwa would do the same. Mnangagwa said he would not overstay because the Constitution forbids any person from staying on beyond the 2-term limit of ten years. Someone please tell Christiane Amanpour that we are back where we started. ZANU PF is about to destroy the Constitution to give Mr Mnangagwa a third term. Tonderai Chidawa, President of the Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform, an affiliate of Zanu PF and its youth League, says the 2030 agenda to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule beyond his 2028 second term constitutional limit is on and the window for different views on it has now closed. This comes ahead of the ruling party's annual conference in Mutare from 13-18 October, which aims to pass a resolution supporting its Bulawayo decision last year to extend Mnangagwa’s rule to 2030. WATCH | An affiliate member of Boys Dza Mdara says that Resolution Number One argues President Mnangagwa is loved by the people and should remain in power until 2030, even though the Constitution limits his term to 2028. Using the same reasoning, he claims that Paul Tungwarara is also loved by the people and should be co-opted into the ZANU-PF Central Committee. Today, a group of Zimbabwean youths kickstarted the resistance campaign against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s plan to remove term limits and allow him to stay in office until he dies. Mnangagwa, who is 86 years old, has three and a half more years left on his current second term, which he wants to extend to 2030 and beyond. At least half of his party, ZANUPF, is also opposed to the idea, which aims to prevent Mnangagwa’s deputy, General Constantino Chiwenga, from ascending to power if ZANUPF wins the 2028 elections—a likely outcome given the collapse of Zimbabwe’s opposition. Chiwenga helped Mnangagwa remove Robert Mugabe in a military coup in 2017 when he was the Commander of the Defence Forces. Biti’s CDF is opposed to the mutilation of Zimbabwe’s Constitution and the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term. After Biti’s press conference on Friday, the state has moved in on his offices. It clearly shows that the regime is acting outside the law in its attempt to rewrite the Constitution. Deploying state security apparatus to shut down voices opposed to its agenda is not only oppressive, it is a direct assault on the Constitution itself. It is unlawful, unjustifiable, and exposes the regime’s fear of scrutiny. If its agenda is legal and constitutional, why is it terrified of open dialogue?

We enacted a new Constitution in 2013 to ensure that presidential terms are expressly limited so that no president can stay in power indefinitely. Fast forward to 2026, ZANU PF wants to take us back to a place where we have an imperial presidency who has vast power, is not voted for by the people and who has extensive control over the judiciary and other key levers of the State.
