Ahead of Ramadan – Standing in Solidarity with Palestinian Communities Under Attack Against the backdrop of the ongoing horrors in the Gaza Strip over the past two years, the humanitarian crisis in the West Bank continues to deepen. We are witnessing an unprecedented escalation in settler terrorsim, alongside broad processes of ethnic cleansing carried out with the support and leadership of the government. During this period, 45 herding communities in Area C - home to more than 2,600 people - have been forcibly displaced. Thousands more have been uprooted from refugee camps that have been destroyed across the West Bank. The deliberate impoverishment and starvation of Palestinian communities is another tool in the ethnic-cleansing toolkit: denying access to grazing lands and agricultural areas, unprecedented violence during the olive harvest, and the sweeping cancellation of work permits since the beginning of the war in Gaza have all severely undermined these communities’ basic ability to sustain themselves economically. In the face of these policies, for more than two years we—together with activists and grassroots organizations—have been operating a food-aid network for Palestinian communities in Area C of the West Bank. So far, we have delivered more than 5,000 food parcels to dozens of communities throughout the West Bank. Four of the communities we supported were violently expelled from their land, and we continue to support them as much as possible in the temporary locations to which they were forced to flee. As Ramadan approaches, we invite you to join us and support this effort. Severe poverty, food insecurity, and rising prices make the special month of Ramadan an immense challenge for many families in the West Bank. In times of great darkness, preserving the tradition of family gathering and observing Ramadan with dignity and abundance carries profound meaning. As part of the current campaign, we hope to support approximately 500 families across the West Bank (in Area C) by raising 125,000 NIS. The cost of each food parcel is approximately 180 NIS. Ramadan is a month of generosity and shared responsibility. In 1992 alone, consumer prices rose by approximately 2500%, annihilating decades of savings built up by citizens during the Soviet Union. There were over 5 million excess deaths in the decade after the collapse of the Soviet Union. I wanted to share this because a lot of people still don't understand what impact Dolly Parton had on millions of families and children. In 1995, she launched Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a nonprofit program that mails one free, high-quality, age-appropriate book every month to enrolled children from the time they are born until they turn 5 years old. She launched an initiative promising every 7th and 8th grader a $500 check upon graduation under one condition: they had to sign a contract with a "buddy," and both students had to graduate together The foundation also established an ongoing scholarship program providing $15,000 to local high school seniors pursuing higher education. Urgent Call for Humanitarian Aid for Şêx Meqsûd and Eşrefiyê For days, armed groups affiliated with the Syrian government have been carrying out heavy attacks on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo. Hundreds of thousands of Kurds in the districts of Şêx Meqsûd and Eşrefiyê are the targets of these brutal assaults. Since the start of the offensive, numerous civilians—including women, children, and the elderly—have been killed. Hundreds have been injured. At the same time, in these cold and harsh winter days, tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and neighborhoods. Attacks involving tanks, artillery, and heavy weapons constitute a clear violation of international humanitarian law. At this moment, the right to life and human dignity of hundreds of thousands of Kurds in Şêx Meqsûd and Eşrefiyê are under acute threat. Jihadist groups are deliberately targeting Kurdish residential areas and indiscriminately bombing civilian facilities, hospitals, and homes. In particular, due to the attacks on the Khalid-Fajir Hospital, dozens of injured people cannot receive medical care. As a result of these attacks, shortages of medicine, food, drinking water, and electricity have worsened dramatically. In response to this severe humanitarian crisis, the Kurdish Red Crescent (Heyva Sor a Kurdistanê e.V.), together with partner organizations in several European countries and the USA, has launched an urgent aid campaign for the Kurds in Şêx Meqsûd and Eşrefiyê. The aid collected through this campaign will be delivered as quickly as possible to the affected population with the support of our diaspora community. Thomas Sankara once said: "Comrades, there is no true social revolution without the liberation of women. May my eyes never see and my feet never take me to a society where half the people are held in silence. I hear the roar of women's silence. I sense the rumble of their storm and feel the fury of their revolt." He was assassinated in a coup led by his brother, friend and ally, Blaise Compaoré. Spent only 4 years in power and he did the following: - He vaccinated 2.5 million children against meningitis, yellow fever and measles in a matter of weeks. - He initiated a nation-wide literacy campaign, increasing the literacy rate from 13% in 1983 to 73% in 1987. - He planted over 10 million trees to prevent desertification -He built roads and a railway to tie the nation together, without foreign aid - He appointed females to high governmental positions, encouraged them to work, recruited them into the military, and granted pregnancy leave during education. - He outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy in support of Women's rights - He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of the ministers. - He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and forbade the use of government chauffeurs and 1st class airline tickets. - He redistributed land from the feudal landlords and gave it directly to the peasants. Wheat production rose in three years from 1700 kg per hectare to 3800 kg per hectare, making the country food self-sufficient. - He opposed foreign aid, saying that "he who feeds you, controls you." -He called for a united front of African nations to repudiate their foreign debt. - In Ouagadougou, Sankara converted the army's provisioning store into a state-owned supermarket open to everyone (the first supermarket in the country). - He forced civil servants to pay one month's salary to public projects. - When asked why he didn't want his portrait hung in public places, as was the norm for other African leaders.

Today in my constituency, Masaka City - Kijjabwemi, I had the distinct honour of representing H.E. the President of the Republic of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri K Museveni , at the Mothers' Union Buganda Annual Conference and the commemoration of 150 Years of the Global Mothers' Union. The conference brought together delegates from the six dioceses of Buganda - Namirembe, Mukono, Luweero, Mityana, Central Buganda and West Buganda - under the theme _"Lighting the Way for Generations to Come."_ In his message, which I delivered on his behalf, H.E. the President, together with Maama Janet K. Museveni , thanked the Almighty God for 150 years of continuous Christian service, family nurture and community upliftment. He commended the leadership of Mothers' Union Buganda, led by President Josephine Kasaato, for being an unwavering pillar of Christian faith and a moral compass anchoring households in biblical values. The President particularly applauded the practical initiatives of this conference - the business expo and community health camp - noting that true faith must be active and responsive to the physical and economic needs of the people. He noted that you cannot have spiritual light in a home with extreme poverty and disease; true light means food security, financial security and good health. He further commended the Mothers' Union Buganda SACCO for promoting a culture of saving and investment, and reiterated that when a woman is economically empowered, the entire household is transformed. He reminded the mothers that the real medicine against poverty (obwaavu) is wealth and job creation in the four sectors of commercial agriculture, industry, services and ICT, and urged every family to take advantage of the peace, infrastructure and wealth funds put in place by the NRM Government to create household wealth. He called upon every delegate to return to their dioceses as agents of both spiritual renewal and socio-economic transformation. On support to the Union, as you may recall, H.E. the President had earlier extended *UGX 500 million* to the Mothers' Union Buganda SACCO as a revolving fund, which the mothers are using prudently. Today, he sent me with an additional UGX 20 million to support the hosting of this historic conference. The host school, Kijjabwemi C.O.U. S.S, expressed deep appreciation to H.E. the President for his consistent support, including the construction of modern laboratories, the termly capitation grants, and teachers on the government payroll. The Headteacher, however, appealed for support towards a 5-storeyed classroom block to accommodate more learners, as Kijjabwemi is the biggest school in this community where most families are still raising the first generation of literate children. On this request, I was very clear: This is exactly why I vehemently rejected the suspicious plan by the Masaka City Mayor to build city offices worth UGX 14 billion! We are in the Kisanja of no more sleep and no more corruption - a Kisanja of priorities among priorities! You cannot aspire to build offices worth 14 billion while the very schools and health centres in the same city are limping, our markets are non-existent, and our women's groups still need support. We must prioritize what touches the lives of our people first. I thank the Mothers' Union Buganda for the warm reception and for their tireless service to God, family and country. S.S, expressed deep appreciation to H.E. the President for his consistent support, including the construction of modern laboratories, the termly capitation grants, and teachers on the government payroll. The Headteacher, however, appealed for support towards a 5-storeyed classroom block to accommodate more learners, as Kijjabwemi is the biggest school in this community where most families are still raising the first generation of literate children. On this request, I was very clear: This is exactly why I vehemently rejected the suspicious plan by the Masaka City Mayor to build city offices worth UGX 14 billion! We are in the Kisanja of no more sleep and no more corruption - a Kisanja of priorities among priorities! You cannot aspire to build offices worth 14 billion while the very schools and health centres in the same city are limping, our markets are non-existent, and our women's groups still need support. We must prioritize what touches the lives of our people first. I thank the Mothers' Union Buganda for the warm reception and for their tireless service to God, family and country.
