MBS has an incredible and bold vision for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and his people. For years he has been executing that vision with massive results. My first trip here was 18 years ago. The changes over this time, especially in the last five years, are striking. Saudi Arabia is using its natural cultural resources, its energy resources and its highly educated and motivated population to build an incredibly successful and diverse economy — all while retaining their national identity and religious and cultural values. This fits perfectly with the vision of President Trump to end the dismally failed US policies of aggression in the Middle East in favor of a rising tide that will lift all boats: a relationship of mutual benefit, not of destruction. It’s time we end the bombs and bullets and replace them with handshakes, deals, cultural exchange and prosperity. Sadly, my country has been responsible for significant problems in this region over the last several decades. Our military aggression cost the lives of over a million Iraqis and thousands of our own troops who died for a non-Constitutional misadventure fueled by the forever war military industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned us about. What the President indicated this week is that the era of the neocons and other violent globalist agendas is over for the United States and soon over for the world. We will lift sanctions on Syria, we will welcome trade, we will provide expertise and investment and, God willing, we will see the rise of the most peaceful and prosperous Middle East the world has ever seen. I am the most proud of my country I have ever been and the most enthusiastic about Saudi Arabia and the region that I’ve ever been. To its west, the Houthis are consolidating their position around Bab el-Mandeb, a chokepoint an Israeli official reportedly now considers an even more difficult problem than Hormuz because ships pass so close to Houthi-controlled territory. And the pressure is moving inland. After Saudi Arabia reportedly launched 129 airstrikes against Houthi positions over 48 hours, satellite imagery showed heavy damage at an Aramco facility in Abha, including at least six destroyed storage tanks. Saudi Arabia is now reportedly considering a major Yemen operation even without U.S. participation, after MBS asked Trump twice for American military help and was refused. Meanwhile, the east-west pipeline designed to bypass Hormuz has also been attacked. That leaves Riyadh staring at an ugly strategic map: Hormuz constrained by Iran. Bab el-Mandeb threatened by the Houthis. The east-west escape route under attack. If you look from 1958 onward, the Gulf countries have stood with Lebanon every time we needed help. We have 450,000 Lebanese living in the Gulf. Most of the billions of dollars transferred by the diaspora to Lebanon come from the Gulf. So this is an umbilical relationship between us and the Gulf, and we are grateful for it. Every time Lebanon went through a crisis, the Gulf opened their doors and allowed our people to obtain visas, go and work, and send money back to Lebanon. This is very important for us, and we appreciate everything they have done. Saudi Arabia in particular has been the longest-serving country standing by Lebanon, and it has consistently supported Lebanon. They were also among the countries that helped lead the Taif Agreement, which ended the civil war in Lebanon. Saudi Arabia remains very engaged in supporting stability in Lebanon. I believe Saudi Arabia and the United States are aligned on the future of Lebanon and the region. Our other friends—France, the UK, Egypt, Qatar, and Europe in general—have also stood by us and helped us over the years. We have many friends, but we need to align ourselves on how to move forward. The key now is for this government to disarm Hezbollah and to continue peace talks in Washington in order to sign a peace agreement.
