Tesla Self-Driving V14.2 takes me 550 miles from Johnson City, Tennessee to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in my Model Y with zero driving interventions (mostly in the dark). During the trip, there is 1 scenario where the vehicle chose the wrong parking spot. Instead of trying to re-route to the chargers, I just did this maneuver manually (shown at 15:33). There is also a slight, unnecessary yield at the very end of the drive, but it figured itself out after a second. Aside from these two scenarios that were not safety critical, I just sat there and relaxed for over 9 hours. This is how close they are. There were zero tense moments along this entire route. I would’ve felt perfectly comfortable not supervising for this entire 550 mile ride. The car could’ve done this entire drive safely without anyone in the car. Small nav tweaks are all I’m seeing today that stand between Tesla and at-scale operability. This is nothing compared to what I would’ve told you less than 18 months ago. Are there more issues that I’m not catching and others are? Yeah. Are they safety critical? Probably some, but not many that I’ve seen online. The critical thing to think about is where we were in 2023, vs 2024, vs 2025, vs present. Regardless of what anyone says, the signal can be observed inside of these vehicles. Tesla has made unprecedented progress in a very short amount of time, and they are now in the end game, passing human capability. If you think you understand FSD but haven’t lived with it within the last few months, you are far behind. What an achievement. What a time to be alive.

Using Tesla FSD and looking out at the road makes you realize that the majority of drivers out there are barely paying attention while they manually drive their vehicles. It is beyond frustrating that people do this, but the genie is out of the bottle now - I don’t think there’s anything society can do to convince people not to use their phones while driving. That is why self-driving needs to become the norm as soon as possible. Not only does it make YOU safer while using it, it makes it safer for everyone else on the road who is impacted by how you drive. I really hope insurance companies start to reduce rates for people who use autonomous driving features - I really think that would be a big motivator (money) for people to start using FSD.

A common thing I hear when speaking with gas car owners is that the idea of owning a Tesla is too complicated and not worth the trouble. They often cite not knowing where chargers are, and not wanting to deal with the headache of figuring it out. They also believe there aren’t enough chargers to satisfy their travel needs. This is a myth, and the opposite of true for almost everyone. The truth is that Tesla ownership is actually easier than gas car ownership for travel, and in general. That’s it, that’s the entire travel “planning” process. You don’t have to do it, the software does it. And after your first road trip using FSD 14.2 instead of driving yourself, the energy you will have at your destination will be impossible to ignore. You will realize the luxury of self driving far exceeds the extra 45-60 mins of charging required along a long route like this. You will realize the trip psychologically felt way quicker, because you didn’t have to be tensed up and locked in the entire time. It’s game changing. This is why Tesla is a leader in customer retention. Once you take the plunge, you realize the truth is opposite what you thought before going for it, and you can’t imagine going back.
