The entire night was supposed to be about him, yet during his own acceptance speech he looked at Robert Lewandowski and told him: “You deserve your Ballon d’Or. Everyone agreed that you were the winner last year. I think France Football should give you the 2020 Ballon d’Or. You deserve it.” Think about the humility required to do that. Messi was standing on the biggest individual stage in football, holding the biggest individual award, and instead of making everything about himself, he used his moment to recognize another player.
