Art of Living pioneered the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan' more than a decade ago. Since then, over 1 crore 80 lakh youth across the country - from Kashmir to Kanyakumari - have taken the pledge against substance abuse through programs conducted in numerous colleges and educational institutions. The movement has also played a significant role in the rehabilitation of lakhs of young people. I am glad that the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has now taken up this mission nationwide on a larger scale.

Privatisation of medical colleges has drawn strong resistance from people across the state, and the massive rallies held in all 175 constituencies stand as proof of their collective voice. #MyModiStory In 2016, after completing my first year as Chief Minister of Assam, I invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji to a massive public rally in Guwahati. The atmosphere was electric. Thousands had gathered, the energy was overwhelming, and I was seated right beside him on the stage. As a speaker addressed the crowd, Modi ji’s attention shifted elsewhere. Pointing towards a tree visible just beyond the sea of people, he asked me softly, “Which tree is that?” I told him it was the Krishna Chura, known for its fiery blossoms. His curiosity continued. He wanted to know where such trees usually grow. I explained that they could be found across Assam. That was the moment when his visionary instinct came alive. He said, “Why don’t you plant more Krishna Chura trees across the state? Imagine Assam in full bloom, people from all over the world will come to witness its beauty. It will not only strengthen your identity but also boost tourism.” Those words became a turning point. With his encouragement, we launched an ambitious plantation drive setting a target of 10 crore trees. During my tenure itself we planted 9.5 crore. Soon, this effort turned into a people’s movement. Birthdays, festivals, and special occasions all became opportunities to plant trees. What began as Modi ji’s suggestion evolved into a cultural habit across Assam. For me, this was one of the most memorable moments of my life. Today, I visited the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters for my first official programme since assuming office as Chief Minister. We officially launched the Swachhata initiative, a mega city-wide cleanliness drive to ensure our city shines bright ahead of Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s upcoming visit for International Yoga Day next week. During my interaction with the KMC Officials, I addressed the current Administrative transition. Following the recent impasse, the State Government stepped in swiftly to ensure that essential emergency civic services remain uninterrupted. While an Administrator is temporarily overseeing operations to prevent any deadlock, I assured the people of Kolkata that Democracy will be restored soon. With the rainy season approaching, I have also instructed Officials to review monsoon preparedness and remain fully geared up to tackle waterlogging and keep the city safe and prepared.

With gratitude and sadness, I pay tribute to my uncle Thiru P Sabanayagam who passed peacefully, aged 101, the afternoon of 22 June. I was in London, in transit to Chennai from New York when I received the sad news. Upon landing in Chennai on the 23rd, I went to offer my condolences and pay my respects in person. He lived a full life: we had celebrated his 100th birthday last June. In his 33-year-long, illustrious career as a civil servant, he had worked as a Secretary and Chief Secretary in the Governments of the erstwhile Madras State and the current state of Tamil Nadu under four Chief Ministers: Perunthalaivar Kamaraj, my Grand-Uncle Thiru M. Bhaktavatsalam, Perarignar Anna and Thalaivar Kalaignar (1971 to 1975). He retired as Secretary, Union Ministry of Education and Culture in 1980. As we bid farewell to him, we remember his many accomplishments and the stellar legacy that set the benchmark on how Senior Officers should function. At a personal level, he was a great source of strength and confidence over the years, irrespective of my chosen career at the time. I have often marvelled at his wry sense of humour and boundless energy—he stayed active until the day of his passing. He lived a controlled and disciplined life, generously imparting the wealth of his wisdom and experience to people in the family and beyond. I remain grateful for all the love and advice, and the unfailing affection I’ve received from him through all the years, and am thankful to be able to pay my last respects in person in this brief span before leading a delegation from the IT Department on an official trip to Australia. A day later, I also had the honour and privilege of accompanying our Hon’ble Chief Minister Thiru M.K.Stalin, who reminisced of the bond between Thalaivar Kalaignar and his Chief Secretary (at the time of the declaration of Emergency (MISA Act) in 1975), during his visit to pay homage.

Prathap Simha's vile “cut” remark about Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ji in Bagalkot has exposed the BJP's despicable politics once again. It is increasingly evident that Prathap Simha’s outburst is driven by desperation. CM Siddaramaiah and DCM DK Shivakumar have received death threats in the past - from the same divisive forces, including one from BJP leaders who warned that their bodies would be stuffed into a refrigerator. This is not one man's madness - it is the BJP’s political culture. This is the same Prathap Simha, who in the past called the elected Karnataka government a "Taliban government" - not once, but repeatedly at the instruction of the BJP Central Leadership. BJP leaders are habitual offenders in spreading poisonous discourse. Ex MP Ananth Kumar Hegde openly insulted Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao's wife - while serving as a Union Minister. BJP MLC CT Ravi had fallen to the ultimate low by insulting Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar inside the Legislative Council itself. Other BJP leaders are repeat offenders in hurling insults, indignities, and outrageous remarks, to offend and denigrate individuals, communities, and religions. When abuse becomes the Magna Carta of BJP leaders, it is futile to expect language of development, progress, or harmony. The anger and frustration of BJP in Davanagere South and Bagalkot assembly bye-elections emanate from their rejection by the people and foresight of imminent defeat on April 9, 2026. Irked by the same, and angry with Kannadigas, State and Central BJP leadership has now assigned the task to the ilk of Prathap Simha, to hurl abuses and indignities at the leadership of the poor and downtrodden, including on Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. And the ultimate irony - the BJP leadership first expelled and disowned Basanagouda Patil Yatnal for six years from the BJP. Yatnal openly calls BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra and former Chief Minister Shri. B. S. Yeddyurappa as a "corrupt family”. In Bagalkot assembly, BJP and its candidate, Sh Veeranna Charantimath have now appointed Yatnal as their “star attraction”. A party divided into a thousand pieces, who cannot manage their own house, are now abusing Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Minorities and their leaders including Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shri. D. K. Shivakumar. Karnataka has a proud legacy of progressive thought, scientific temper, religious tolerance, and social harmony. The great Kannadigas will not be misled by BJP leaders, who seek to drag politics into the gutter. We demand the following immediately: 1. Prime Minister, Sh. Irked by the same, and angry with Kannadigas, State and Central BJP leadership has now assigned the task to the ilk of Prathap Simha, to hurl abuses and indignities at the leadership of the poor and downtrodden, including on Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar. And the ultimate irony - the BJP leadership first expelled and disowned Basanagouda Patil Yatnal for six years from the BJP. Yatnal openly calls BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra and former Chief Minister Shri. B. S. Yeddyurappa as a "corrupt family”. In Bagalkot assembly, BJP and its candidate, Sh Veeranna Charantimath have now appointed Yatnal as their “star attraction”. A party divided into a thousand pieces, who cannot manage their own house, are now abusing Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Minorities and their leaders including Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister Shri. D. K. Shivakumar. Karnataka has a proud legacy of progressive thought, scientific temper, religious tolerance, and social harmony. The great Kannadigas will not be misled by BJP leaders, who seek to drag politics into the gutter. We demand the following immediately: 1. Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi, BJP National President Sh. Nitin Nabin, BJP State President B. Y. Vijayendra, and LoP Sh. R. Ashoka must tender a public apology to 6.5 crore Kannadigas, particularly to the OBCs, SCs, and Minorities, for the disparaging and intolerable remarks of BJP leader Shri. Pratap Simha, made against Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah. Let them expel Prathap Simha from BJP, if they do not subscribe to his remarks, and if they are not a party to the conspiracy. If they do not do so, it will be proved that the state and central leadership of the BJP has deliberately assigned Prathap Simha for hurling these nefarious insults and indignities. 2. FIR be lodged against Prathap Simha and strict action be taken. If the BJP and its leaders do not apologize, the poor and the downtrodden would teach the BJP a befitting lesson in the bye-elections of Davangere South and Bagalkot. Jai Hind! Jai Karnataka!
