Billy Donovan shares a lesson that changed how his players thought about winning. At Florida, he had a manager track how long the ball was in each player's hands during a game. He asked one of his starters: "How many minutes do you think you had the ball in your hands for the game?" The player said 15 minutes when he had played 30. The real numbers? "A backcourt player, for the most part, is probably 92% of the game gonna be played without the ball in their hands. A frontcourt player - 95% of their minutes is gonna be played without the ball in their hands." Think about that. You're playing without the ball almost the entire game. "It's amazing to me how many players focus on points, points, points. That's what goes on ESPN. That's what gets the highlights." "But if you're gonna strictly talk about winning and you're really driven and motivated by winning and competing and being a good teammate, you have to look at the fact is -- what am I doing with my 92, 93, 94, 95%?" "Am I screening? Am I running the floor? Am I on the floor for loose basketballs? Am I rebounding? Am I taking a charge?" "There's so many ways to impact the game with the amount of time you're on the floor when the ball's not in your hands." This is what separates good players from winning players. You control how you show up. You control your attitude. You control your effort. Great teammates master what they do when no one's watching - and when the ball isn't in their hands. Winning isn't about the glamour. It's about the 95%. (๐ŸŽฅCoaching U ) (๐ŸŽฅBrendan Suhr)

ใ€Winning Ticket : Horse racing = the Derbyใ€‘ โ€œIt was the one and only race of my life. I went into that Derby convinced this was my lastโ€”my onlyโ€”chance.โ€ Masato Shibata, regular rider of Winning Ticket, said those words twenty-six years after finally capturing the prize he had chased since boyhood. You cannot speak of Winning Ticket without speaking of Shibata; that 1993 Derby remains seared into memory no matter how times change. In 1964, at fifteen, Shibata left his rural hometown for the jockey-training school in Tokyo, and that same year he saw the Derby live for the first time. Shinzan, later a Triple-Crown champion, won amid thunderous roars. The young Shibata was overwhelmed: โ€œI want to ride in the Derby before a crowd like that. And once Iโ€™m riding, I want to win. Horse racing equals the Derby.โ€ He turned professional at eighteen and reached his first Derby in his third seasonโ€”finishing twenty-third. Year by year he honed his craft and became a trusted jockey, yet the Derby kept slipping away. In 1985 he felt how cruel luck could be: he had teamed with Miho Shinzan, a colt many expected to sweep the Triple Crown, only to lose him to injury before the Derby. โ€œIโ€™m going into the Derby with the mindset that if I win, I could retire on the spot.โ€ It was meant simply as a show of determinationโ€”but the media twisted it into headlines like โ€œShibata to retire after Derby victory,โ€ and fans came to believe he had vowed to quit the moment he won. A public desire to grant him that victory grewโ€”yet he lost again that year. He now had another reason to crave the Derby. Shibata travelled the world to ride, and wherever he went someone asked, โ€œHave you won your Derby?โ€โ€”in America, Australia, Britain, everywhere. Each time he admitted he had not, he could see their shoulders drop in disappointment. โ€œThe closer Derby season came, the stranger things happened,โ€ he later laughed. A senior retired jockey offered a harsher view: โ€œHeโ€™s a strange fellowโ€”forever honoring old debts and favors, climbing onto horses that canโ€™t run.โ€ ๐Ÿงต1/3
