The Department of Labor’s decision to halt enrollment at Maine’s Loring and Penobscot Job Corps Centers is deeply misguided and will do damage to hundreds of young people. These programs serve nearly 500 Mainers a year and are pillars of support for some of our state’s most vulnerable teens. Loring alone employs 129 people, making it also one of the largest employers in rural northern Maine. To show what’s at stake, today, I shared with the Secretary of Labor the story of Adais Viruet-Torres. When I first met Adais in 2008, she was a Job Corps student at Loring, having escaped a dangerous and unstable life in Connecticut and New York. With training and support from the Loring Job Corps Center, she turned her life around, later earning her nursing degree with honors from Husson in 2019, and continuing on to become a nurse practitioner. This is what America and China are doing — building armies of skilled individuals. For Nigeria to compete with these great nations, we must take a page from their playbook. Scott Adams once said, “Every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success.” This is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and our Federal Ministry of Education strategy. That’s why we are aggressively reviving our technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system. We aim to equip young men and women with “life skills” that will enable them to be productive members of their communities, while also improving their employability and career opportunities. TVET is one of the cornerstones of our 6-point agenda to reform our education system. We will be creating opportunities for our young Nigerians both men and women to give them life skills to improve their employability irrespective of their level of education — from basic education to tertiary institutions. A skilled workforce is key to President Tinubu’s vision for the nation. We will also be adding to our TVET curriculum life skills in Renewable Energy (Solar), compressed natural gas (CNG) and mechanised farming to also support PBAT’s agenda of ensuring food security in our country. We are working to build a better nation for the next generation.

While I am an advocate for giving kids chores and trying to instill responsibilities in children, I am torn about this. She has some kids doing all this work while others are sleeping and doing easier jobs. I get it she has 8 kids, but she may be working them way too hard at such a young age. I say let them be kids, she literally has a schedule of all their chores and some of their lists look a little hefty while others look lite. Isn’t it the parent’s job to take care of the house when the kids are this young?
