After regrouping with our investors and the team, I’ve made the difficult decision to wind down Hike completely. Our US business, launched just nine months ago, is off to a strong start. But scaling globally would require a full recap, a reset that is not the best use of capital or time. The Big Question → We could raise the capital, but the real question is: is it worth it? Is this a climb worth pivoting for? For the first time in 13 years, my answer is no. Not for me, not for my team, and not for our investors. Why? 1. RMG was never the destination. It was a way to test unit economics and traction in India while working toward a bigger vision. In hindsight, starting in India locked us into the model and regulatory headwinds, turning a temporary path into a more permanent one. 2. The Gaming Nation vision is real, but we may be too early. The world will eventually move toward a Nation-type model in gaming and Web3 - Company 2.0. But crypto regulation is still developing globally, and we don’t want to repeat India, where we hoped for clarity that never came. 3. And most importantly, if doing a full reset, is this where I’d put my own capital and energy today? For the first time, the answer is no. The world has changed in the last decade - and so have I. There are more important problems to solve and bigger opportunities to deploy brilliant talent and capital. Looking Back & Lessons The last 13 years have been immense. Hike Messenger reached 40M MAUs and became the 35th most loved consumer brand in India at its peak. With Rush, we built a brand new kind of Casual PvP gaming platform and scaled it to 10M users and $500M+ in gross revenue in just 4 years. Our execution was super, but we could never quite make it stick. There are clear lessons to carry forward, especially on market selection: 1. Be careful with winner-take-all markets. To win, you need to go global. 2. Don’t build for today’s tech constraints. Build on the spring/summer of new technologies. 3. Regulatory clarity matters. Risk is fine; uncertainty is not. More importantly momentum is everything. And build what your heart and mind are deeply excited about. It’s the conviction that carries you through. This is both a disappointment and a hard outcome. But I choose to look on the bright side: the learnings are invaluable, and my conviction for what’s next is even stronger. To everyone who has been part of this journey - our users, our team, our investors, and our community - thank you. As a CEO, you’re only as strong as your team, and I want to give a special shout-out to mine - an incredible group of people who gave this everything. Hike This chapter ends, but the climb continues. Looking Forward I’ve always thrived at building at the forefront of technology. Over the last decade, in the little time I had to explore outside of Hike, I kept returning to the same three frontiers. And now, they feel like the great canvases for decades to come → 1. AI → For the first time, technology has both intelligence and memory. Imagine products that don’t just serve us functionally but truly know us - systems that adapt, grow, and partner with us. As a UX-first builder, this is the most exciting time to be building software. 2. Breakthroughs in Energy → Human progress has always been bound by energy. The world’s demand for energy is rising faster than ever. Breakthrough approaches, especially in physics are needed to power the future. The last century gave us mastery of fine matters and electricity, the next will move deeper, at the intersection of science and spirituality - into what yogis call divine magnetism and physicists call the quantum world or electromagnetism. From there will come technologies that today feel impossible to imagine. 3. Mastery of the Self → As AI takes on more of our work, a deeper question will rise: what now defines us? When productivity is no longer the measure of worth, humanity will turn inward. Man’s evolution will move from the intellect to intuitive attunement - a deeper connection with ourselves and the divine (which we’ll realise are one and the same). The tools, spaces, and guides that help us explore this inner world will be as transformative as any innovation in the outer one - unlocking the next level of humanity’s potential. If you put these together, a picture emerges: → the cost of intelligence trending to zero → the cost of energy trending to zero → and the cost of willpower falling lower and lower. Just imagine a future where willpower is infinite, energy is abundant, and intelligence is at our fingertips. Twelve years after the formation of Telangana, one thing remains unchanged: the anti-youth mindset of the Congress and BRS. The successive Chief Ministers of Telangana towards our youth. Governments may have changed, but the tendency to mock and undermine the aspirations of Telangana's students, rather than empowering them, has remained the same. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who holds the Education portfolio, has no moral right to describe engineering students as "criminal waste." Such a remark is not just insensitive; it is an insult to lakhs of students, their families, and every engineer who has brought pride to Telangana and India. Unfortunately, this demeaning of students & youth is not an isolated incident. Similar rhetoric was used by former CM K. Chandrashekar Rao. Whether under BRS or Congress, successive governments have failed to recognise the immense talent and potential of Telangana's youth, choosing instead to belittle and demoralise them. Telangana's engineers have built globally successful careers, driven technological innovation, founded world-class companies, and strengthened India's reputation as a global technology powerhouse. Yet, instead of celebrating these achievements and inspiring the next generation, the Chief Minister has chosen to ridicule an entire community of aspiring professionals. Telangana's engineers are not "criminal waste." They are innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers and nation-builders. The youth of Telangana deserve leaders who believe in their potential, invest in their future, and inspire them to dream bigger, not those who undermine their confidence with reckless and demeaning remarks. I would like to wish all my compatriots a happy Independence Day, happy Independence Zimbabwe. The independence of our country, unlike many other African countries, came through blood that was shed. There are so many Zimbabweans who lie in unmarked graves from Tanzania to Zambia to Botswana to Mozambique, and they put their lives on the line so that you and I could have the independence that we did not have under colonial rule. There is a distinct difference between those who fought for the independence of our country and died, never seeing an independent Zimbabwe, and those who took over from colonial rule and then destroyed our country through incompetence, corruption, and many other afflictions that should never have been there. I am in no doubt at all that had our country not become independent, I and many Black citizens would probably not be where we are today, thanks to the early gains of independence. Sadly, I now find myself as a journalist and a Zimbabwean with NO freedom to speak, to write, and to exist as a full citizen in my country post independence after the derailment of the independence dream. Many of our people did not have the opportunities that I personally got, and many others got, to advance our lives. It is unfortunate that we find ourselves where we are today, not because independence is bad, but because we ended up with selfish, corrupt, and incompetent individuals who abandoned the principles and aspirations that inspired many Zimbabweans to go out there and fight so that their country could be free. So on this day, when we celebrate 46 years of independence, the same zeal and drive that defined those who died fighting for our country must be carried forward by those who are alive today, to make sure that the country is restored to where it is supposed to be. Zimbabwe is one of the richest countries under the sun. It has almost every mineral that you can think of, and it has some of the best soils in the world. There is no reason for any Zimbabwean to be unemployed, to fail to earn an income, or to go to bed on an empty stomach. There is absolutely no reason for any Zimbabwean to struggle if the country is led by people who know what they are doing and who put the country first, the national interest first, ahead of their own selfish needs. Whilst colonialism was a terrible stain on the history of our country, there are lessons that can be drawn from that period. Rhodesia was run like a business, not like a fiefdom. The fact that most of the central hospitals that exist today were built during the colonial period, with the exception of Chitungwiza, tells us that infrastructure was prioritised, even if it was designed to serve a minority. That reality does not excuse colonial injustice, but it exposes the scale of failure after independence. Forty-six years later, the government has built only one central hospital. Around 2,500 women die every year during childbirth due to a lack of adequate maternity facilities. The largest hospital in Zimbabwe still relies on a maternity theatre built in 1977, and even then only one of its two theatres is functional, with the working one having been refurbished by a South African bank. That is a damning indictment on the current leadership. The fact that millions of Zimbabweans have been forced to leave the country to take up menial jobs in South Africa, as waiters or farm workers, is an indictment on the current leadership. The fact that people like myself and many others have had to leave home out of fear for our lives is an indictment on the current leadership. Whilst the leadership has failed, we as citizens of Zimbabwe also carry a responsibility towards our country, in whatever space we occupy. We must stop following personalities and start following ideas, whether in the ruling party or in the opposition. Our country has been destroyed because we follow personalities, many of whom are vacuous and empty, and when they fail, they drag the nation down with them as our leaders have done. We must not wait for a Messiah to come and save us from the afflictions we face today. We have a responsibility to do what is right for our country. During the liberation struggle, leaders were changed at different points because the struggle was never about personalities, it was about an idea, an independent Zimbabwe where every Zimbabwean, black, white, green, or yellow, has the same rights and opportunities to pursue a better life. So as we celebrate, and we should celebrate, we must also reflect on our responsibilities going forward. We celebrate because independence itself was a noble idea and remains a noble idea. When things are bad, you do not burn down the house, you fix what is broken. We must honour and remember those who lost their lives so that people like myself could go to college, become journalists, and be recognised internationally, as many Zimbabwean professionals have been, some even advising presidents across the continent and beyond. Zimbabwe has some of the most accomplished people anywhere in the world, and it should not be where it is today. It is therefore up to us, as Zimbabweans, to make sure that we do what is right for our country. Once again, happy Independence to my compatriots, and thank you to all the stalwarts who laid down their lives for us to be independent and to the countries that supported our struggle. We could not have achieved independence in 1980 without Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, and many others who stood with us. They did well for us and we thank them. It is those who destroyed the country who should hang their heads in shame today. My heart bleeds when I see so many young Zimbabweans with university degrees, yet ending up as victims of drug abuse because there is no work to go to. There are no opportunities available that are aligned with what they went to university to study. It is a tragic indictment of the situation we find ourselves in today. Today we have become a nation where boreholes are being drilled in the middle of cities because the rulers have failed to do something as basic as delivering water into people’s homes. Today we have become a nation where the rest of the region laughs at us because our roads are riddled with potholes, yet the leadership drives Ferraris on those same roads. Today we have become a nation where even our O-level pass rate has not gone beyond 34% because of the failure of leadership to do what needs to be done. Today we cannot even feed ourselves. We have to rely on food aid, and yet we were once colloquially referred to as the breadbasket of the region. These are some of the realities we should reflect on. I could go on and on, but at this point, it is not necessary. To our leaders, I say, how does it feel when you hear the very people you lead saying Ian Smith was better, when they say colonialism was better? How do you feel? Or do you even feel anything at all when those words are spoken? Of course, colonialism was brutal. Of course, Ian Smith was a racist leader who upheld a minority regime built on exclusion and oppression. But it is a damning indictment of your failed leadership that some of our own people now feel pushed to the point of romanticising that dark past. Independence was meant to usher in dignity, opportunity, and shared prosperity for every Zimbabwean, regardless of colour or creed. It was meant to restore ownership of our future to the people. Yet today, you cannot deny that a small, privileged few are the primary beneficiaries of that independence, while the overwhelming majority are trapped in poverty, penury, and relentless suffering. That is not what liberation was fought for. However, nothing can justify a failure to be grateful to those who fought and died for the independence of our country. They did their part. It is now up to us to do our part and ensure that our country becomes what it is meant to be. Happy Independence Zimbabwe.

During the liberation struggle, leaders were changed at different points because the struggle was never about personalities, it was about an idea, an independent Zimbabwe where every Zimbabwean, black, white, green, or yellow, has the same rights and opportunities to pursue a better life. So as we celebrate, and we should celebrate, we must also reflect on our responsibilities going forward. We celebrate because independence itself was a noble idea and remains a noble idea. When things are bad, you do not burn down the house, you fix what is broken. We must honour and remember those who lost their lives so that people like myself could go to college, become journalists, and be recognised internationally, as many Zimbabwean professionals have been, some even advising presidents across the continent and beyond. Zimbabwe has some of the most accomplished people anywhere in the world, and it should not be where it is today. It is therefore up to us, as Zimbabweans, to make sure that we do what is right for our country. Once again, happy Independence to my compatriots, and thank you to all the stalwarts who laid down their lives for us to be independent and to the countries that supported our struggle. We could not have achieved independence in 1980 without Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, and many others who stood with us. They did well for us and we thank them. It is those who destroyed the country who should hang their heads in shame today. My heart bleeds when I see so many young Zimbabweans with university degrees, yet ending up as victims of drug abuse because there is no work to go to. There are no opportunities available that are aligned with what they went to university to study. It is a tragic indictment of the situation we find ourselves in today. Today we have become a nation where boreholes are being drilled in the middle of cities because the rulers have failed to do something as basic as delivering water into people’s homes. Today we have become a nation where the rest of the region laughs at us because our roads are riddled with potholes, yet the leadership drives Ferraris on those same roads. Today we have become a nation where even our O-level pass rate has not gone beyond 34% because of the failure of leadership to do what needs to be done. Today we cannot even feed ourselves. We have to rely on food aid, and yet we were once colloquially referred to as the breadbasket of the region. These are some of the realities we should reflect on. I could go on and on, but at this point, it is not necessary. To our leaders, I say, how does it feel when you hear the very people you lead saying Ian Smith was better, when they say colonialism was better? How do you feel? Or do you even feel anything at all when those words are spoken? Of course, colonialism was brutal. Of course, Ian Smith was a racist leader who upheld a minority regime built on exclusion and oppression. But it is a damning indictment of your failed leadership that some of our own people now feel pushed to the point of romanticising that dark past. Independence was meant to usher in dignity, opportunity, and shared prosperity for every Zimbabwean, regardless of colour or creed. It was meant to restore ownership of our future to the people. Yet today, you cannot deny that a small, privileged few are the primary beneficiaries of that independence, while the overwhelming majority are trapped in poverty, penury, and relentless suffering. That is not what liberation was fought for. However, nothing can justify a failure to be grateful to those who fought and died for the independence of our country. They did their part. It is now up to us to do our part and ensure that our country becomes what it is meant to be. Happy Independence Zimbabwe.

When the US was the manufacturing powerhouse of the world and was getting exponentially richer each year, providing Europe with the materials to rebuild after WWII, the greed of the rich dictated that they wanted yet more profit. Human labour was their biggest cost and as such was inhibiting their bottom line. So under Reagan, they decided to throw American workers under the bus and ship jobs and in some cases whole manufacturing plants to China. That was a conscious and deliberate decision. This accelerated under Clinton, as the sole focus of American corporations was on profit. They were happy to destroy US manufacturing to simply make more money. China said ‘Thanks very much’ and used the American investment to lift 850 million Chinese out of absolute poverty and build the most advanced infrastructure in the world. They did that with greedy American’s money because they don’t have a shareholder class. As a result, China now has the most advanced automated manufacturing systems and are now the manufacturing capital of the world. The American response? Play the victim, impose tariffs and attempt to choke Chinese progress and innovation by taxing Americans to do it. The result? China has a $1.2 trillion trade surplus, as well as infrastructure across Africa, Europe and South America. It controls 80% of global rare earth processing and owns almost $700 billion of U.S. sovereign debt. That’s before we talk about them seeking to dominate the global AI Tech Stack and robotics space, all while leading the world in nuclear technology and cheap renewable energy, outpacing US energy generation capacity. Don’t blame China for the biggest economic fuck up in history. As a result of Trump’s short sighted imbecilic policies, is far from hot, it’s simply a legend it its own lunch break. His obsession with power and stuffing his own pockets with money is breaking America. The American people deserve better and above all deserve to know the truth, that this corrupt regime is NOT winning on anything except economic and geopolitical incompetence at which they have become world champions. Trump’s delusional belief that the U.S. is respected is embarrassing. The world is laughing, in the knowledge that it is rewiring trade and security ties quietly in the background. Inside a decade the U.S. is facing irrelevance in what will be a new world order in which they no longer call the shots. Empires rise and fall as do reserve currencies. China can smell blood in the water and if it’s one thing China excels at, it’s playing the long game. It doesn’t have to worry about four year election cycles or a fickle voting public. It can wait as the economic lifeblood is drained from a nation eating itself alive. They’re happy to wait, because they have global infrastructure in place, highly advanced manufacturing and AI capable economy with a pipeline of highly educated graduates. Their shift away from fossil fuel imports dependency with an objective to electrify the nation using low cost renewable and next generation nuclear energy, is all baked into their roadmap. The days of America dictating the future are receding. The change will not happen overnight, and China is fine with that. They’re prepared to wait as long as it takes for the U.S. to slowly self suffocate. The sad thing is, because of Trump, and his treatment of longstanding allies, nobody will lift a finger to help the U.S. without the kind of concessions that will further diminish American standing on the world stage. If Democrats think it just needs a change of government to make things better, those days are long gone. It will take a generation to repair the damage done. People don’t easily forget extortion attempts and arrogant posturing. We are at a true inflection point, sadly it’s not one recognised by the delusional convicted criminal in the White House.

Over the last decade, a consensus has grown on the Left and Right that the US needs to be more self-sufficient when it comes to manufacturing. During Covid, we discovered we didn’t make much of the equipment we needed to deal with a pandemic and were thus dependent on other nations, and so Congress passed and Trump signed the CARES Act in part to spend money to support domestic manufacturing of medical supplies. In 2022, a bipartisan majority in Congress passed the CHIPS Act to bring semiconductor manufacturing back to the U.S. out of the recognition that we had become dangerously dependent on foreign nations for microchips, which have become general-purpose technologies, necessary for national security, and upon which the AI revolution will be built. Where America had a $38 billion trade surplus in 1991 on advanced technology manufacturing, today it has a $299 billion deficit. Liberals and conservatives, Leftists and Rightists, have long shared a broad agreement that manufacturing and its knock-on industries are an essential source of employment for non-college-educated working-class people, and that the loss of manufacturing contributed to social fragmentation, family breakdown, and the drug addiction and death crisis. In a 2024 survey, Americans agreed ten to one that “we need a stronger manufacturing sector; 47% said America suffered from globalization, while 33% said it benefited. It is partly for that reason that Joe Biden, in perhaps the most bipartisan and non-ideological decision of his presidency, kept in place the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump during his first term as president. And yet both liberals and many conservatives are reacting with outrage as President Donald Trump puts in place precisely the trade tariffs needed to reduce our dangerous dependency on other nations and increase our manufacturing of the goods we need for national security, economic security, and societal wellbeing. The China tariffs, the CARES Act, and the CHIPS Act did not result in the return of much manufacturing, much less the rebalancing of trade. Total manufacturing jobsare 12.8 million in December 2019 and are 12.8 million today. The US still depends on China and other nations for active pharmaceutical ingredients, personal protective equipment, microchips, and critical minerals. Suffice to say, we are a very long way from a manufacturing renaissance sufficiently robust to revitalize the communities that have lost good, high-wage jobs to China and other competitors and even rivals internationally. The reason is clear. The average tariff level globally is 6.7% compared to America’s 2.7%. And simply subsidizing industries may not be enough for two major semiconductor manufacturers, Intel and TSMC, to produce domestically without tariffs. US companies moved production to countries with lower labor costs, fewer regulations, and subsidized exports. Economists calculate that just the so-called “China Shock,” that country’s entry into the World Trade Organization, alone cost the U.S. 2.4 million jobs and had ripple effects across entire communities. The average manufacturing wage is $103,000 per year compared to $37,000 per year for the average service sector wage. And where a service sector job supports 2 to 3 jobs, a manufacturing job supports nine jobs. Continuing with a system that is fundamentally advantageous to a minority of the country and disadvantageous to a majority is not sustainable and unwise to prop up. Trump’s trade actions are part of a broader return to nationalism underway globally, and they can’t be understood on economic grounds alone. Regarding priorities, we should put the two-thirds of the country that is non-college educated working-class ahead of the 50% of the country who own stocks, for moral and democratic reasons. America is deeply divided. While there are many proximate reasons for this, including geographic sorting, cable TV, and social media, the underlying reasons are economic. The gulf between the educated elites and the non-educated working class has grown dangerously large. Many critics of the tariffs are well-intentioned. They are right to worry that they could come with significant economic costs and disruption. The concern of many of them is genuinely for the working class and poor, who higher prices for imported goods would most harm. However, many American elites today identify more with their global counterparts than their fellow Americans. And that’s a huge problem. In his study of 21 civilizations, British historian Arnold J. Toynbee found that civilizations collapse not simply from external invasion but from internal decay, precisely when their elites stop identifying with the people. “Civilizations die from suicide,” he famously wrote, “not murder.” Civilizations all depend on their elites, Toynbee noted, or the people he called the “creative minority.” But rising success creates decadence, complacency, and eventually contempt toward their people, and they start to identify with elites in other nations. This is all a natural outgrowth of trade, cosmopolitanism, and snobbery. It starts to view the ordinary people as “deplorables.” At this point, the elite lose their creativity and become simply the “dominant minority,” one that rules no longer by example but rather by manipulation or force. Toynbee could be describing America in the 21st Century. College-educated elites look down on the American working class and identify with other professional and managerial elites in Europe and other nations. They sympathize less with the low-skilled American citizen born here and more with the low-skilled foreign migrant here illegally. Such elites are more concerned with tariffs' impact on their stock portfolio and the cost of their gadgets than they are with the downward pressure illegal migrants put on wages or with how nations manipulate their currency to retain manufacturing. Toynbee said that, at this stage of development, a nation’s elites become “parasites or renegades,” alienated and contemptuous toward the culture that produced them. Civilizations at this late stage are morally hollow and thus fragile and prone to abuses of power, like censorship, lawfare, and the weaponization of government agencies.
