Today Gaza held the first municipal elections in over 20 years, in Deir Al-Balah. Few observations: 1- Voter turnout was only 22% 2- Four slates competed over 15 seats. Their campaigns focused on electricity, water & services. But all promises were meaningless b/c Israel alone controls & has turned off all of Gaza's electricity since 2023 & destroyed the overwhelming majority of Gaza's water infrastructure during the genocide. Israel is still preventing the entry of any basic equipment to fix the water & sewage systems in Gaza despite the Trump plan explicitly promising to start repairing those very infrastructure over 6 months ago. 3- The Gaza gov deployed 500 police & civil servants to guard the voting venues. Observers said the police were neutral & didn't interfere. 4- While the municipality election's voter turnout was lower than room temperature, there is strong Palestinian demand for presidential & parliamentary elections. 5- The municipal elections are merely symbolic to show some democratic renewal to the European countries that recognized the state of Palestine. But the fact that they went smoothly, free & fair, is a demonstration that Palestinians are ready for general elections immediately.
