In Division III, Region 10 action, #6 University School Baseball took advantage of a handful of Defiance miscues and used a three-run 3rd inning to defeat #14 Defiance Baseball, 4-1, advancing to the Regional Final. 2026 Auburn Baseball commit Deacon Nelson is widely known for what he does at the plate, but it was his arm that stole the show on Thursday. The right-hander kept Defiance off balance throughout four strong innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out two. 2028 RHP Miles Wolf slammed the door over the final two innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit in an impressive relief appearance. 2026 SS/3B James Bucci impacted the game on both sides of the ball for the Preppers. RHP Anthony Eyanson (LSU Baseball) is another college arm worth keeping close tabs on this season. After collecting 34 strikeouts across 29 IP as a Freshman, Eyanson last year pitched his way into a full-time starting role and worked a 3.07 ERA with 85 Ks to 24 BB in 82 IP. Last summer on the Cape, Eyanson allowed 2 ER and struck out 6 in as many innings before departing for Team USA. Eyanson has a prototypical pitcher's frame at 6'2" and 195-lbs with some present physicality in his lower-half. He has a simple and under control delivery, and attacks from a three-quarters arm slot. Whippy arm stroke, average arm speed. Eyanson does a nice job of consistently repeating his delivery. Will vary his tempo. Mechanically sound. Eyanson's FB sits in the low-90s, but was up to 97 this summer. Not a real bat-misser right now, but it has riding life in the top-half of the zone and will also flash some run/sink to the arm side at times. Consistently stays off the barrel of opposing hitters with it thanks to his advanced command of the offering. He supplements his FB with two distinct breaking balls. The first of which is a mid-to-upper-70s CB. Eyanson can both land it for strikes and get whiffs out of the zone with it. Will at times flash a big shape with true 12-to-6 action and some teeth. Raises his arm slot slightly when delivering it to get more on top of the baseball. Regularly flashes above-average. For me, Eyanson's best weapon is his low-to-mid-80s SL. Effective against both left and righthanded hitters. He manipulates its shape well and against LHH it has a harder, more gyro look. Against RHH, it flashes two-plane tilt with more sweep than depth. Late bite. Generated a 41% miss rate and held opposing hitters to a .127 average. Would give it a 55. Eyanson rounds out his arsenal with a seldom-used changeup. Sits in the low-80s and while he's still gaining a feel for it, it at times flashed late tumbling life. It's a fine 4th pitch. Eyanson has above-average command and control of his entire arsenal and has a lengthy track record of filling up the strike zone. He pitches with a slow heart beat and screams starter at the next level. In line to pitch on the weekends this season for LSU. Outstanding makeup!

Today’s #SaturdaySleeper is RHP Sean Matson (Harvard Baseball). Matson this summer was legitimately untouchable, pitching his way to a sparkling 0.00 ERA with 26 K to just 3 BB across 21.2 innings. The Cape League All Star was named the Most Outstanding Relief Pitcher for his performance. The 6’2”, 210-pound righthander attacks from a high-3/4 slot, features a short, quick arm stroke and has some natural deception in his delivery. Matson hides the ball well and is an athletic mover. His FB this summer was sat in the 89-92 MPH range (t94), but it played up due to its riding life (averaged 21.1” of IVB at school) and the fact that it looks like he’s throwing it out of his back pocket. This summer it generated a 29% miss rate. The main attraction with Matson are his secondary offerings. Between his CH and SL, opposing hitters hit a combined .054 (2 total hits, both against the SL). Low-80s SL features tons of sweeping action and he throws it with conviction. 42% miss rate this summer, 60 offering. To round out his arsenal, Matson throws a mid-70s CH that on average is 14+ MPH off his FB. It has plenty of tumbling action and seemingly disappears 1-2 feet in front of the plate. LHP Ben Abeldt (TCU Baseball) is a name to follow closely this spring. Enjoyed a strong Freshman year in which he worked a 3.60 ERA with 71 Ks to 24 BB in 55 IP. Was dominant last spring and pitched his way to a 1.83 ERA with 54 Ks to just 16 BB across 44.1 IP. Two-time Team USA invitee. Standard pitchers' frame at 6-foot-3 and 210-pounds. Added noticeable strength and physicality to it between '23 and '24. Some natural funk and deception in his delivery. Uncomfortable look, especially for LHH. Works exclusively on the 1B side of the rubber which makes it even tougher for LHH. Long, loose arm stroke and attacks from a low-three quarter slot. Big time crossfire. Abeldt relies heavily on his fastball (threw it 79% of the time in '24) that sits in the 91-94 MPH range. Was up to 96 during the spring and up to 98 over the summer. Run and ride through the zone with particular life on his arm side. Like a lot of the low-release lefties who have a little giddy up on their heaters, it's generates the most whiffs when located on the inner-1/2 and/or top-1/2 of the zone. Does a nice job of staying off the barrel with it, 23% whiff and OBA of .208 last spring. Go-to secondary offering is his low-80s slider. Long, sweeping life with some late bite at times. Not to beat a dead horse, but just a brutal look for lefties; Abeldt will release the pitch from essentially behind their backs. Legit swing-and-miss pitch that's effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. 45% miss rate last spring, comfortably a 55. Closer to a 6 than a 55. Third pitch right now is a low-80s CH for which he's still gaining a feel. Gets good separation off his FB (averaged 10 MPH off) and does a nice job of killing spin. Natural fade to the arm side and will occasionally flash some tumbling life. Profiles as an effective option against RHH. Strike-throwing ability is above-average. The key for Abeldt this season is selling his ability to start. Has made just 2 starts in his collegiate career and could headline TCU's rotation in '25. Look for both the SL and CH usage (especially the SL) to tick up. Curious to see how he fares in more extended looks. Easy comp is former Miami LHP Rafe Schlesinger. 3rd-4th round type this July.

Drew Faurot (FSU Baseball) was one of the more underrated players in the CCBL this summer. The Seminole will likely start up the middle next spring after slashing .263/.342/.414 in 28 games with a wood bat in Brewster. The switch-hitting middle infielder has a similar stance as a LHH and RHH and shows a high leg kick upon load. It's a violent hack through the zone with exceptional bat speed and was able to show decent pull-side pop from both sides with 6 2B & 3 HR this summer. Faurot was third among qualified SS in hits (26), OPS (.756) and second in HR (3) and SLG% (.414). He looked smooth defensively and showed the ability to play SS or 2B after splitting time at both spots on the Cape. Solid range with average speed and a fringe arm at SS/2B but can get the ball out of his glove quickly. He should stick at either position at the pro level. Pitch recognition could improve as he struggled at times with the slider and change, resulting in a 55% miss and 42% miss rate, respectively. He had a 30.3 K% on the Cape but has a career a 40.9 FB% in college. Would also like to see some more line drives via hard hit balls after having a below average 42.6 GB% while at school. His second Cape stint showed that improvement is coming. Faurot's hard work ethic stands out. He's always watching film, taking hacks, fielding grounders - looking to improve in all aspects of his game. He's going to be an early Day 2 draft prospect in '25 with projectable power and versatility both offensively and defensively.

OF Jaden Gustafson (Wichita State Baseball) is an under the radar name to keep tabs on this spring. Hit .296/.367/.403 last spring with 15 XBH and followed with an outstanding summer in the Jayhawk League in which he posted a .391/.439/.626 slash line with 11 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 32 RBIs and 12 BB to just 2 Ks across 115 at-bats. Athletic frame at 6'3" and 215-lbs with particular strength in his lower-half. Stands upright in the box with a high handset and slightly open front side. Will drop/drift his hands a bit in his load, but Gustafson has plenty of hand speed. Small-strider. Compact operation in which he takes a relatively direct path to contact. Has shown the ability to adjust. Gustafson has double-plus bat-to-ball skills, and last season he posted an 87% overall contact rate and a 93% overall IZ contact rate (94% against FB). He also possesses advanced pitch recognition skills and swing decisions, and last year his overall chase rate was 24%. Very few swings outside of the shadow zone. Gustafson uses the entire field, but has a particular knack for going the opposite way. Barrel skills are also advanced. The most intriguing part about Gustafson in my eyes is his potential power upside. That might sound a little strange considering he has 0 collegiate HRs, but he's a strong kid with some present impact (90th EV of 103, Max of 104.3) and whose AirPull% last spring was a minuscule 7.7%. The bat and hand speed is there, and I'll be curious to see what will happen if he can get the ball up in the air more. Even if he can just start pulling the ball more. Gustafson is a great athlete who profiles best in a corner OF spot. Can go and get it, and he's got North-to-South range as well gap-to-gap range. Arm is fringy, but the athleticism certainly plays. Runs well underway. Could play his way into the 7th-10th round range. (📽️: Wichita State Baseball)

OF Jaden Gustafson (Wichita State Baseball) is an under the radar name to keep tabs on this spring. Hit .296/.367/.403 last spring with 15 XBH and followed with an outstanding summer in the Jayhawk League in which he posted a .391/.439/.626 slash line with 11 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 32 RBIs and 12 BB to just 2 Ks across 115 at-bats. Athletic frame at 6'3" and 215-lbs with particular strength in his lower-half. Stands upright in the box with a high handset and slightly open front side. Will drop/drift his hands a bit in his load, but Gustafson has plenty of hand speed. Small-strider. Compact operation in which he takes a relatively direct path to contact. Has shown the ability to adjust. Gustafson has double-plus bat-to-ball skills, and last season he posted an 87% overall contact rate and a 93% overall IZ contact rate (94% against FB). He also possesses advanced pitch recognition skills and swing decisions, and last year his overall chase rate was 24%. Very few swings outside of the shadow zone. Gustafson uses the entire field, but has a particular knack for going the opposite way. Barrel skills are also advanced. The most intriguing part about Gustafson in my eyes is his potential power upside. That might sound a little strange considering he has 0 collegiate HRs, but he's a strong kid with some present impact (90th EV of 103, Max of 104.3) and whose AirPull% last spring was a minuscule 7.7%. The bat and hand speed is there, and I'll be curious to see what will happen if he can get the ball up in the air more. Even if he can just start pulling the ball more. Gustafson is a great athlete who profiles best in a corner OF spot. Can go and get it, and he's got North-to-South range as well gap-to-gap range. Arm is fringy, but the athleticism certainly plays. SS Marek Houston (Wake Forest Baseball) is one of the premier college infielders in this year's Draft. After earning the starting SS job as a true Freshman, Houston had a standout summer with the Amsterdam Mohawks in which he hit .429/.557/.548 with 4 XBH and 13 RBIs in 17 games. He proceeded to break out last season to the tune of a .326/.434/.516 slash line with 16 2B, 8 HR, and 39 RBIs. Had an impressive summer that was split between the Cape and Team USA. Did what very few college players do anymore and started on the Cape, went to Team USA, and finished out the summer back on the Cape. Was a CCBL All-Star and hit .306/.465/.329 with more BB (26) than Ks (21). Lean, athletic build at 6'3" and 190-lbs. Pro body. Somewhat wide base in the box with a medium-high handset. Puts the majority of his weight on his back side. Minimal load in which he wraps his bat a bit. Small stride with average bat speed. Will eliminate his stride and widen his base in 2-strike counts. Takes a direct path to contact. Compact, contact-oriented operation. Does a nice job of consistently working inside the baseball. The most appealing part of Houston's offensive profile is how polished his hit tool is. Bat-to-ball skills are comfortably plus and last season he ran an overall IZ contact rate of 92%. Pitch recognition skills and swing decisions are both advanced, and this summer on the Cape he worked a remarkably low overall chase rate of 16% - including just 8% against SL. Will use the entire field. It's a bit of a cliche, but he hits the pitch where it's thrown. Hit tool is without a doubt a 55, but closer to a 60 than it is a 55. Biggest question mark right now is his impact and how much is in there. Flashed some pull side thump during the spring, but it's below-average power with wood. Again though, you're buying the hit tool. Adding impact both this year and beyond is key, though. Houston's calling card is undoubtedly his defense. Pro shortstop through and through. Silky smooth actions, range both up the middle and to his arm side. Comfortable attacking the baseball and throwing on the run/from different arm angles. Soft hands with an above-average arm. Instincts are high level. He does a great job of staying behind the baseball then working THROUGH it on a line. The epitome of "suave!" Top-40 overall type this July. (🎥: Wake Forest Baseball)
