Roman architecture is at centre of Europe’s visual allure. Sophisticated Roman structures have survived hundreds of centuries without renovation... In 103 AD Roman engineer Apollodorus of Damascus built a 1.1km bridge from stone and wood. Trajan’s Bridge was 19m from surface of river, 15m wide and capable of supporting the weight of hundreds of traversing Roman soldiers. It was only a few feet shorter than Sydney harbour bridge. Romans built a lot of West’s longest standing buildings. They were also the first civilisation to make bridges from concrete. Some of these ancient bridges stand now as they did day they were built. This is thanks to the structural innovations that were first used by Romans. And innovations that eventually helped shape contemporary bridge engineering. Alcántara Bridge is such a bridge, standing in Spain since 104 AD. Roman civil engineer Caius Julius Lacer was the man behind the bridge. His tomb stands nearby, with an epitaph that reads “I leave a bridge forever in the centuries of the world”. He wasn’t wrong. There is a rumour doing the rounds on web that Roman engineers in charge of building bridges had to stand beneath them as scaffolding was removed. Apparently, trepidation of tonnes of rock and debris falling and crushing you lead to some pretty tight structural planning. A more likely history is found in Roman Empire’s military expansion. To improve Roman access lines the empire formed guilds of skilled workers and thinkers who shared ideas and building principles. These early engineering guilds made important discoveries in structural design, in the materials and in the piers that supported the legs of the bridges. Romans had improved traditional footbridge by creating a bridge that maintained its structural integrity through the centre. To achieve this the Romans did not rely on steel beams running through the stone members, but instead on the tensile strength of the stones themselves. The shape of the arch allowed the bricks to be inserted at a curved angle until they joined at the peak of the arch with a keystone. This keystone was shaped as a trapezoid that used the weight of the stone and concrete in the bridge to compress the tapered stones together. This pressure formed a structure in the arch that required a tremendous amount of force to rupture. Where traditional bridges were at their weakest in the centre, the arch was at its strongest. Arch was a structural innovation in building design. But it wasn’t only thing Roman Empire contributed to construction. Romans were also unique in the materials they chose to build with. A natural cement called pozzolana was used by Romans as mortar for piers (legs) of their bridges. Not only is this cement said to be ecologically cleaner than today’s cement mixtures, but its also a cement that grows stronger over time. Pozzolana is still used in some countries. It’s made by combining two parts pozzolana (which is a type of slag that forms naturally from volcanic rock) with one part powdered lime. As early as 3rd Century BC, Romans used pozzolana instead of sand in concrete in their construction. This gave their structures supreme strength and stability. As not every bridge built by Romans had luxury of building its piers on land, Romans used cofferdams where the piers would fall within a body of water. Romans used cofferdam as temporary structure that allowed construction of a bridge pier in a space of water. Cofferdams that were used by Romans were simpler than ones used in contemporary construction, but their function is identical. First, Romans would dig a ring of timber logs into river bed. #TheNextPrinceEP7 the score mood placement was genius & the build up was everything. it's like your heart's thumping along with it 😂 the first half of the scene started intense (1-3), viewers could feel the tension building up. they probably wanted to portray how they're feeling (especially Charan), on their forbidden relationship between the Prince & his guard. a lot of hesitation, adrenaline, "I shouldn't be doing this", as he's still in his guard uniform, clearly showing the difference in their ranks but still holding that passionate feeling they're sharing at that moment. the bgm changed once charan took off his uniform and took his first move. it's as if he left his status, rank, and duty behind. Moonlight Magic marks a change of mood from hesitation & tension to pure longing love, no more prince & guard, it's just Charan & Khanin. it was so good, i hope they'll release a full album of OST including the orchestra and such, I love it.

Tradition holds that St. Paul wrote his final epistle, 2 Timothy, from this very prison during his second Roman imprisonment. Other letters may have been composed or finalized here or nearby. From this sacred spot, Peter was led to his upside-down crucifixion on Vatican Hill, and Paul to his beheading outside the city. For more than 1,300 years, pilgrims have descended these steps to pray where the two great Apostles of Christ spent their final days. Some of my brethren from Southern Kaduna, with all due respect and appreciation of their documented long standing issues and dynamics, are buying and swallowing, hook, line and sinker, the narratives from their new found lovers that El-Rufai is demonic and evil, without pondering over their fate over history and time, even long before Nasir El-Rufai appeared on the scene, and placing them side by side to determine factually and objectively, how truly worse or better El-Rufai was for their cause and fate. I do not want to mention some of my APC brethren to whom El-Rufai has suddenly transformed from hero to villain, simply because he told us some hard truths about our party; truths which most of us know and some have equally voiced out. Tragically, some say, not unexpectedly, some of my brethren from the South East, many of whom have never crossed River Niger to the North, have already jumped in the fray and joined in the bandwagon of 'he hates Igbos and Christians' 'El-Rufai is evil', etc., much the same way they did to Buhari, without any sensible proof and without pondering over the motive of those orchestrating and feeding them such narrative. No lesson having been learnt. For a man whose watch word as Minister for FCT was excellence. Or did anyone hear that he favored any particular tribe or religion while he went about restoring the Abuja masterplan as its Minister? I have been in the FCT and I know firsthand. Put your ears to the ground, beyond the hype and the noise and hear stories about today. A man who as Governor of the cosmopolitan Kaduna state engaged Nigerians - Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa, Christian and Muslim and men and women alike, so long as they could add value to his governance of the state. Including many of those joining betrayers and ungrateful elements to castigate him today. I was not one of them, but I can't in good conscience pretend that I did not know. A man who inspite of his limitations as chief security officer of the state on paper, understood that security was paramount to delivering his mandate for the people who elected him and who God temporarily placed him in authority over. He was tough on every part, North and South alike, when need was. For him, criminality was criminality, no matter who orchestrated it. That is not to say that he was a saint or made no mistakes, but he who is a saint among us and of no sin, should cast the first stone. Compare and contrast your own state and state Governor with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s Kaduna state and El-Rufai as a Governor. Unfortunately, the increasing tragedy of our politics today, is that it blurs the lines between common sense and nonsense, truth and lies, friends and frenemies and reality and illusions; making heroes out of villains and vice versa, making many to defend who and what they like and not what is right, and making people to embrace those they should sensibly avoid like a plague and to hate those they should ordinarily love and vice versa.

An endangered flower like the white fritillaries in a construction zone can bring a project to a grinding halt, putting jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk. The balance between conservation and progress in California is reaching unhealthy proportions. Nate’s business woes are not rooted in him wanting to con people. And yet, he now has to face the consequences of this thin line he has been walking to maintain investor confidence versus cutting visible corners so he could better manage his costs. Regardless of her melodrama about not wanting to be poor (thanks to her mother’s incessant poisoning of the well), Cassie’s biggest desire in life is to be loved. And for better or for worse, Cassie & Nate have taken the vows to be there for each other. I predict she goes out into the world to make money in ways she knows how, to service this debt she’s inherited as Mrs. Jacobs. I know Jacob and Sydney will push the limits of their characters caught in these ludicrous scenarios. I am seated for this! Maddy’s uncomfortable presence at the wedding, Marsha’s jabs at her, her witnessing the love Nate & Cassie seem to have for each other, are beautifully and painfully captured by Alexa. She truly owns her role as Maddy, who is a pro at faking it till she makes it. She’s hurt by the life she didn’t get but she should feel blessed about making an honest living where she stands on her own. Being rich is a nice aspiration but sometimes the prices to be paid are too high. Nate is now dismembered from the desire to maintain their affluent status. Jules’ plot is tragic. The character who seems to have the most sense of self in high school, who whole heartedly and unapologetically embraced her queerness, is now a walking shell with no sense of integrity. It will be interesting to see what Sam imagines for her to reclaim herself again. Rue navigating this new world of crime is a challenging role for Zendaya she’s knocking out of the ball park. I know she’s just getting started. Looking forward to more of her sassy, gender bending antics as her plot unfolds. Loving this season!!

I had the thrill of a lifetime getting to sing backup for Monte Warden at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday. I feel like I've been floating for days. My husband and I have been huge fans of Monte -- an absolute Texas legend -- for years. He has two great bands -- the Wagoneers and The Dangerous Few. We've seen both at their Austin residencies (at the famous Broken Spoke and Parker Jazz Club, respectively) and in other locales. I got to be backstage last year when he performed solo at the Opry. It's weird to have an inanimate object give off such an energy as the Opry stage does. Everyone who matters has sung from there and you can totally feel that. The crowd on Saturday night was AWESOME. They were there to have fun and be entertained and had a great energy also. It was the anniversary of Elvis's death so Monte sang the two songs Elvis performed at the Opry in 1954 -- Blue Moon of Kentucky and That's All Right. Elvis received a famously tough reception, with the crowd thinking he was way too rock n' roll for a country music stage. As he left the stage, one guy told him he should probably just go back to Memphis and keep driving a truck. He would never perform there again. Monte told the crowd he hoped for a better reception and boy did they provide. Monte also performed a spiritual he wrote with his beautiful wife Brandi (who also sang BGV and is one of my favorite people on earth) called Steadfast Love. And we got to sing back up on that as well. Legends T. Graham Brown and Don Schlitz played that night as did newer artists Jordan Davis and Kylie Morgan -- it was so fun to meet them and watch them from backstage. Also this absolutely phenomenal bluegrass kid named Wyatt Ellis. We got ready in Porter Wagoner's old dressing room, decorated with photos of his career and some of his famous garb. Monte joked that night to the crowd that if you ever get the opportunity to perform at the Opry, you should do so. I COULD NOT agree more. Here's a bit of us singing Steadfast Love.

For the past week, I have been utterly speechless and spellbound by the graciousness I see displayed all around me by people of all colors. I have been blessed to visit the Holy City of Mecca. I have made my seven circuits around the Ka’ba, led by a young Mutawaf named Muhammad. I drank water from the well of Zem Zem. I ran seven times back and forth between the hills of Mt. Al-Safa and Al-Marwah. I have prayed in the ancient city of Mina, and I have prayed on Mt. Arafat. There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blonds to black skin Africans. But we were all participating in the same rituals, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had lead me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white. America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have considered ‘white’, but the ‘white’ attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all colors together, irrespective of their color. You may be shocked by these words coming from me. But on this pilgrimage, what I have seen, and experienced, has forced me to re-arrange much of my thought patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions. This was not too difficult for me. Despite my firm convictions, I have always been a man who tries to face facts, and to accept the reality of life as new experiences and new knowledge unfolds it. I have always kept an open mind, which is necessary to the flexibility that must go hand in hand with every form of intelligent search for truth. I think sometimes dogs are sent to us. We’ve all had that feeling right? This is certainly the case with Sonny who recently got adopted from us and I wanted to shine the light on his owners and share a remarkable story. In the video you will see the amazing Sena. They saved her and built her back up and selflessly gave her the end to her life she deserved. After she left this world Beth was devastated but that’s when she spotted Sonny. As Beth says… When I saw the clip of Sonny looking up from the sofa, it literally felt like I was looking into Senas eyes because she often had that same expression. I cried most of the day thinking about him and I just had that gut feeling that she’d sent him to us. Same eyes, similar fur, resilient spirit - then the fact he could only be adopted in Thailand and had been waiting 220 days. It all just felt like fate. Now he’s home he continues to show similarities, the way his butt wiggles with his tail, the way he will go outside to sunbathe for a few minutes then come back in, how protective he is of myself and Gonz. But Sonny is younger and healthier than Sena, it’s almost like she sent us him to continue to love and enjoy all the things she couldn’t do due to her health. I think we can all agree Sonny has found the ideal parents and although he will never replace Sena he was certainly sent to the wonderful Beth and Gonz. Some things are just meant to be.
