On December 26, 2025, deputies from our felony unit were in the 2200 block of Buchanan Bay Circle doing surveillance of a homicide suspect so they could serve a DNA search warrant in a murder that happened on Christmas Eve. While deputies were surveilling the residence, two men – the homicide suspect and another man - came out and the second man opened fire on deputies, striking one of our unmarked vehicles. One deputy returned fire, striking the 20-year-old shooter. Deputies rendered aid until paramedics were able to get to the scene and transport the man to the hospital, where he is undergoing surgery tonight. He will face charges for shooting at our deputies. The suspect in our homicide case – who was also armed with a handgun – was detained and was being questioned by our detectives late this evening. As is our standard procedure, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting and will turn over its findings to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once that process is completed, OCSO will conduct its own internal investigation. The deputy who fired his weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave.

This could have been much worse. Last night around 8:20 p.m., JCSO deputies responded to a reported fire on Meyers Gulch Road. Multiple callers reported smoke and flames, with flames reaching approximately 20 feet. When deputies arrived, they found a shed on fire very close to a home. Deputies confirmed no one was inside the home, then used fire extinguishers and dirt to slow the fire and keep it from spreading to the house until Evergreen Fire arrived. Evergreen Fire took over and fully extinguished the fire. The cause remains under investigation. Thank you to the residents who called this in quickly, our deputies who acted fast, and Evergreen Fire for getting this fire out before it became something far worse. Evergreen Fire/Rescue

In 2017, Kent County deputies responded to a trailer in Gaines Township where Ortiz-Nieves had been left to care for several children under the age of 11, including Mejias. When deputies arrived, they found the boy "actively dying on the kitchen floor." An autopsy later revealed that he died from internal bleeding caused by an abdominal tear, an injury investigators determined could only have been inflicted by an adult. The autopsy also showed that Mejias had injuries to the top of his head, lower back, and buttocks, along with two broken ribs that were in the process of healing.

Last night, Washoe County Sheriff’s Office DFR (Drone as First Responder) pilots used RapidSOS live 911 monitoring to launch one of our unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as a drone, in response to a report of a suspicious person in the backyard of a residence in Sparks. The drone was airborne and on scene within three minutes of the call being broadcast to patrol deputies. Once overhead, DFR pilots began canvassing the area and relaying real-time information to responding deputies. Using thermal imaging in low-light conditions, the drone successfully located the suspect in the backyard of a nearby residence on Cromwell Place. Pilots continued to provide live updates on the suspect’s location and behavior, allowing deputies to safely detain the individual without incident. Further investigation revealed the suspect, identified as Ryan Davis, 38, had forcibly entered a residence and moved through multiple neighboring backyards prior to being located. Davis was arrested and transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked on a felony charge of home invasion and an additional charge of trespassing. This incident highlights the outstanding coordination between patrol deputies and our DFR pilots, demonstrating how advanced aerial technology is not used for routine surveillance or to monitor lawful activity. DFRs are deployed for specific, time-limited public safety purposes—their use allows deputies to gain real-time situational awareness before making contact, often reducing the need for force and lowering risk to both the public and responding officers. NEW: 13-year-old girl abducted from her home by her mother's ex-boyfriend, who is shot and killed by sheriffs after he pulls a gun on them in Florida. Marion County Sheriff’s Office sent out an amber alert for a 13-year-old girl who had been taken from her home. Deputies say that a citizen saw the alert and recognized the vehicle, prompting them to call 911. NEW: 13-year-old girl abducted from her home by her mother's ex-boyfriend, who is shot and killed by sheriffs after he pulls a gun on them in Florida. Marion County Sheriff’s Office sent out an amber alert for a 13-year-old girl who had been taken from her home. Deputies say that a citizen saw the alert and recognized the vehicle, prompting them to call 911. Along with a License Plate Reader, deputies tracked down 45-year-old Jason Castillo, who tried to flee when they tried to pull him over. Deputies PIT maneuvered Castillo, the ex-boyfriend of the girl's mother, and shot him when he pointed the gun at the sheriff's deputies. Thornton was seen inside a Tesla at a charging station at a Wawa on East Hillsborough Avenue. Deputies searched the vehicle, where they located a handgun with multiple rounds of ammunition, marijuana, oxycodone, and multiple credit/debit cards belonging to other individuals. Thornton, a three-time convicted felon is facing numerous charges including, Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification of Another (5 or More), Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Armed Possession of Controlled Substance, and multiple felony warrants. More than $1,200 in cash was also seized.
