The founders of Stripe and Pinterest on how to convince people to join your startup Stripe CEO Patrick Collison argues that part of the reason startups resonate so much is because the outcome is not guaranteed: "If it were guaranteed, it would be boring... Whether or not you're the best person in the world at what you do, you're probably not going to alter Google's trajectory. But if you really want to benchmark yourself and see how much of a contribution and impact you can make--which is a really compelling prospect for a lot of the best people--a startup is a much better place to test that." Pinterest founder Ben Silbermann emphasized this as well: "No smart person that you're hiring is under the illusion that you have a crystal ball into the future and that joining is a guaranteed thing. In fact, if you're telling them that and they select in, you shouldn't hire them because they didn't pass a basic intelligence test. I think it's important to tell them what's exciting and where you think the company can go. But also tell them where it will be hard and chart your best plan. And then tell them why their role can be instrumental--because it will be... What I would discourage doing is whitewashing all of that. If people are joining your company because they want all of the certainty and safety of working at Google but also the perks of working at a small startup with lots of responsibility and transparency, that's a really negative sign." Apparently in the early days of PayPal, Peter Thiel and Max Levchin would tell people after they interviewed all the reasons that the company would fail: "Visa and MasterCard want to kill us. We also might be doing something that's illegal. But if we succeed, we'll redefine payments." Don't whitewash the risks. Instead tell them how your startup will change the world if you succeed and how their role will be instrumental in affecting that change. Video source: Y Combinator (2014)

Paul Grahamโ€™s advice for future startup founders: โ€œJust learnโ€ โ€œIf you make a conscious effort to try and think of startup ideas, you will think of ideas that are not only bad but bad and plausible-soundingโ€”meaning you and everybody else will be fooled by them and youโ€™ll waste a lot of time before realizing theyโ€™re no good.โ€ As Paul Graham explains, the way to come up with good startup ideas is to take a step back: โ€œInstead of trying to make a conscious effort to think of startup ideas, turn your brain into the type that has startup ideas unconsciously.โ€ You do this by: 1. Learning a lot about things that matter 2. Working on problems that interest you 3. With people you like and respect (this is incidentally how you get co-founders at the same time as the idea) โ€œThe component of entrepreneurship that really matters is domain expertise. Larry Page is Larry Page because he was an expert on search. And he became an expert on search because he was genuinely interested in it, not because of some ulterior motive.โ€ PG continues: โ€œAt its best, starting a startup is merely an ulterior motive for curiosity, and youโ€™ll do it best if you introduce the ulterior motive at the end of the process. So here is the ultimate advice for young, would-be startup founders reduced to two words: Just learn.โ€ Video source: Y Combinator (2017)

Sam Altman on the biggest mistake startup CEOs make when scaling a company โ€œWhen youโ€™re a Seed or Series A company, you spend a huge amount of effort recruiting, but almost no effort retaining talent โ€” and that is [the right strategy] at the beginning. But if you donโ€™t shift to viewing retaining talent as much of your job as recruiting talent, you eventually have some level of a disaster on your hands.โ€ Sam recalls Mark Zuckerberg speaking at Y Combinator and saying he only hires people heโ€™d report to if the roles were reversed. Sam reflects on this: โ€œIf youโ€™re hiring people that are that good โ€” which you should be doing โ€” they have as many opportunities as you doโ€ฆ And so if you donโ€™t make the role good enough that you yourself would stay in it, then you have a hard time retaining your best people for a long period of time.โ€ Sam gives three pieces of tactical advice for CEOs who want to retain their best people: 1. Spend one-on-one time with your best people โ€œThe thing that your best 5-10 people crave the most is time with you, the CEO. And that is something that as people get busier, they spend less and less time on. Some of the best CEOs in our portfolio, every month they will take out for a one-on-one dinner or drinks or something each of their best 10 people. This is a huge time commitment. If you think about it, you only get 30 dinner slots in a month. Itโ€™s a really big thing to do. But I think it actually works because that is the thing these people really craveโ€ฆ They want you to ask them what you think they should be doing and listen to them and have a personal connection. Thatโ€™s super important.โ€ 2. Continually give them more responsibility โ€œI think if you stop giving people more responsibility, they will eventually leave. If they get to take on new tasks every year or additional tasks every year, theyโ€™re happier.โ€ 3. Proactively re-up their compensation โ€œI think most founders are very bad about proactively re-upping โ€” to the level that they should โ€” their top 5-10 lieutenants.โ€ Video source: Khosla Ventures (2016)

LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman: โ€œItโ€™ll take somewhere between three and five companies to be successfulโ€ Reid Hoffmanโ€™s first startup, SocialNet, failed before he went on to help build PayPal and found LinkedIn. In the clip below, he explains what he told his dad before starting SocialNet: โ€œItโ€™ll take somewhere between three and five companies to be successful. If you look at the statistics of it, the huge majority of these companies fail. Going into it, you may say โ€˜I bat better than averageโ€™, but even if you do, you cannot bat 800 or 1,000.โ€ He continues: โ€œI think [this framing] is really critical to do because when youโ€™re playing that game, youโ€™re thinking about โ€˜Iโ€™m playing really hard. Iโ€™m all in. I really want to win this. But Iโ€™m also thinking what the next game looks like.โ€™โ€ Whatโ€™s your relationship with investors? Whatโ€™s your relationship with your cofounders? Whatโ€™s your relationship with the team that you hire? Whatโ€™s your relationship with partners and customers? What are you learning? Taking a long-term view, maintaining your reputation and relationships, and constantly learning will set you up well for your next at bat. You should also realize that itโ€™s not necessarily a reflection on you or the end of the world if you do failโ€”even the best entrepreneurs will fail sometimes. Reid is a good example. Zverev says he has not spoken to a single player who likes the two week Masters events, โ€˜I donโ€™t even think fans like thatโ€ฆ I understand tennis is a business, but Iโ€™m not sure that business plan is working very well right nowโ€™ โ€œDo you think youโ€™ll play more of a schedule of 15 to 18 tournaments and really try to peak at the Slams? Zverev: โ€œThe thing is I would love to. But with how the ATP has done the touraments nowadays, itโ€™s impossible to. How are you gonna do that? You have the 9 Masters 1000 events, which are mandatory. Most of them are two week long events nowadays, except Monte Carlo and Paris Bercy, which I think are the best two weeks nowadays because youโ€™ve kind of in and out. I think for a fan and for every tennis player, like, Paris Bercy was awesome last year. I won it, which was even more awesome for me (laughs). You kind of get there, you play your 5 matches, and you get out of there. You donโ€™t have to stick around. You donโ€™t have to practice in between matches. You donโ€™t have to do all those things. Thatโ€™s how Masters events used to be. I think all the players loved it. Now the ATP has made 4 mandatory 500 events for you to play, which used to be 3, now itโ€™s 4. You kind of donโ€™t really get under 20 events except if you are pulling out of those big events. Iโ€™m not a fan of where this is going because if you take Alex de Minaur for example last year, he played his last match at Davis Cup November 25th, and played the first match at United Cup this year December 27th. So you have a month of off season. How are you gonna take two weeks off? How are you gonna prepare your body for a new season? How are you gonna train enough tennis? You donโ€™t have enough time to do all those things anymore. I think this is one subject where the ATP has to really think about it and kind of find a solution for it as well. To be honest, Iโ€™ve not heard a single player say that they love the two week masters events. I donโ€™t even think fans like that. They donโ€™t like waiting for two days for their favorite player to play again. I understand tennis is a business, but Iโ€™m not sure that business plan is working very well right now.โ€ (via Nothing Major Show)

๐ŸšจHunter Biden SLAMS Jared Kushner and Don Jr and the Iran War! โ€œWhatever you think about my father's policies, do you know one thing he didn't do? He didn't greenlight to turn Gaza into a Trump Golf Course with the maitre d' being Jared Kushner with $4 Billion in Saudi money! They had a problem with me as being this emblem of corruption. Don Jr. got the single largest loan guarantee from the Department of Defense EVER HANDED OUT of over $600 MILLION for a fusion energy company of which he has ZERO experience. They have gotten Jared Kushner, who's never run a private equity fund, has now a $4 BILLION private equity fund with 80% of the money coming from the Middle East of which he continues to raise as he is the ambassador-at-large on behalf of the Trump administration. Not as a political appointee, but simply as a son-in-law of the president to come to a peace deal of a war in Iran that THEY STARTED that has cost the economy BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars for a war that NOBODY WANTED. That EVERY president before him was pressured by the Israelis to get into and every single one, regardless what you think of them from George from Jimmy Carter through President Reagan, through both of the Bushes, through Clinton, through my dad said, โ€˜you're out of your damn minds!โ€™ So who benefits right now? You know who benefits? The people that are making trades of billions of dollars on market manipulation that occurred. It's literally out and open, but who's going to do anything about it?โ€

You know the thing with random rewards? The thing is that you never get what you want, right? And everyone is hoping for Manga Kenji Skin now... but is it really everyone? What does your heart most desire? If you look back at your life journey, are you where you wanted to be? And if not, why not? What changes would you have made in your life to be happy with yourself? Because this is what really matters. Your reaction to this reward is only a reflection of how deeply you feel inside, isn't it? Is the reward good? Is the reward bad? Isn't that only a matter of perspective? ANYWAY, enough talking, let's finally announce the reward you will receive today, after you watch this video, and after you read this text... But, what is the point of having the reward written here in this text, if it's also announced in the video AND announced in the game... isn't all of this pointless? What does it matter what door you open in the end, right? Some of them have hints, some of them don't, it's pretty much random. OR IS IT? The Mega Box door was pretty obvious, wasn't it? I guess some of them DO have hints, and some of them don't. We did say that in the video actually... the trick is to find out which ones are misleading and which ones are not. To be honest, the plain white door wasn't designed with Manga Kenji in mind... you were the ones who came up with your own theory and when it didn't land, you thought we fooled you, but in reality, you fooled yourself. But one thing I can say, we've seen a lot of crazy theories out there, and some of them are actually right, surprisingly. Maybe an accident, maybe whoever came up with that theory is a future version of me. It can happen, I read it in a book once. Or maybe not. ANYWAY, hope you have enjoyed today's reward, and let's bring the community together to vote for the best door today! #ScaryDoors
