Limpopo Traffic Officers intercepted a suspected overloaded bus on the N1 near the Mashishing off-ramp in Polokwane. The bus, travelling from Malawi to Johannesburg, is licensed to carry 70 passengers but was allegedly transporting 90 people. Authorities also found that the passenger list reflected only 25 passengers. SAPS and Immigration officials were called to the scene and investigations are ongoing. During the stop, the driver attempted to flee the scene. He was promptly intercepted, restrained and arrested by officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Limpopo Traffic Officers. The bus will remain at the PTCC until the excess passengers are removed and the prescribed fine is settled. Further investigations are underway.

The bus traveling from Kasese to Bweyale when a concerned passenger shared the incident on social platforms, alerting police authorities to the dangerous behavior. Acting on the tip, we tracked the bus & intercepted it at Buswekere along the Hoima–Fort Portal road. However, the driver & conductor abandoned the bus & fled. We commend the action taken by the passenger who raised the alarm. We urge all passengers to remain vigilant & responsible, especially in such a period. Had one of the most horrifying experiences while traveling from Chandigarh to Jaipur today in Aircraft 6E7261 by IndiGo. We were made to wait for about 10-15 minutes in the queue in the scorching sun and when we entered the Plane, to our shock, the ACs weren't working and the flight took off without the ACs on! Right from the take off to landing, the ACs were off and all the passengers were made to 'Suffer' throughout the journey. No one addressed the serious concern during the flight. In fact, the air hostess ‘generously’ distributed tissue papers to the passengers to wipe off their sweat. Most of the passengers including women and children were restless and agitated, which can be seen clearly in the video. Helpless passengers were fanning themselves with papers to keep cool. It was clearly a major technical issue but the authorities concerned just wanted to mince money that is why the health and comfort of the passengers was put at stake. I urge DGCA Airports Authority of India to take strict action against #IndigoAirlines and the authorities concerned so that the passengers don’t have to go through such traumatic experience again.

The attackers reportedly stated they were only interested in cash, not mobile phones. Several buses were intercepted, with the victims’ bus being the second from Kumasi. We joined TMPD at the Phumlani Toll Plaza for an inspection of vehicles that were headed for cross-boarder festive season travel. We stopped several buses that were headed to Zimbabwe that were carrying dozens of passengers. Vehicles must be roadworthy for the protection of other motorists and passengers. TMPD inspected 48 vehicles that were headed to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. 27 were found to be heavily overload. Additionally, unroadworthy trailers were impounded. When we launched our festive safety plan, we had committed to strengthening law enforcement on our major highways routes. Yesterday, I had to make a u-turn while heading to my barber's, on receiving reports of a valid threat of extreme violence from Saudi Airlines' Kano-bound passengers who were stranded in Abuja due bad weather in Kano. Some other airlines had also diverted to Abuja for the same reason. I stood amidst over 200 angry passengers, pacifying, reprimanding, and resolving. This is the most adrenaline-rushing part of my job. It requires tact, firmness, wisdom, and team work. But it is risky. Some passengers are extremely violent. A huge, hulk-like, and highly vexed passenger threatened to beat me up yesterday. I looked at him. Initially, I was angry. But I saw the worry in his eyes and decided to handle him differently. We became best friends and he has invited me to his Lagos residence. I will not go, sha. I must acknowledge the support of our Honourable Minister, Festus Keyamo SAN, who insisted that the rights of the passengers be prioritised. He continued to ask for updates on the welfare of passengers late into the night. I am proud of the efforts put in by my DGCA, Capt. Chris Najomo over this matter. In closing, I will say this. Passengers have a responsibility to understand the situations that are beyond the control of airlines. We must minimize the resort to violence inside aircraft and airport terminals this year.

Yesterday, I had to make a u-turn while heading to my barber's, on receiving reports of a valid threat of extreme violence from Saudi Airlines' Kano-bound passengers who were stranded in Abuja due bad weather in Kano. Some other airlines had also diverted to Abuja for the same reason. I stood amidst over 200 angry passengers, pacifying, reprimanding, and resolving. This is the most adrenaline-rushing part of my job. It requires tact, firmness, wisdom, and team work. But it is risky. Some passengers are extremely violent. A huge, hulk-like, and highly vexed passenger threatened to beat me up yesterday. I looked at him. Initially, I was angry. But I saw the worry in his eyes and decided to handle him differently. We became best friends and he has invited me to his Lagos residence. I will not go, sha.
