The provincial department of Transport and Community Safety says the officers were conducting a routine speed operation near Mekete Lodge when a VW Polo was detected traveling at 139 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. It is reported that the driver failed to comply with lawful instructions to stop. With support from the N1 Highway Brigade and the Polokwane Traffic Control Centre, officers pursued the vehicle until the driver was accosted on the D4100 road near Ga-Malope village in the Sekhukhune District. The suspect was arrested and handed over to Polokwane Police Station for further processing. The court appearance of the accused is not yet confirmed.

We stopped several buses that were headed to Zimbabwe that were carrying dozens of passengers. Vehicles must be roadworthy for the protection of other motorists and passengers. TMPD inspected 48 vehicles that were headed to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. 27 were found to be heavily overload. Additionally, unroadworthy trailers were impounded. When we launched our festive safety plan, we had committed to strengthening law enforcement on our major highways routes. The vehicle was carrying 117 occupants – 1 driver, 101 passengers and 15 minors – 52 passengers beyond its legal capacity. The bus, en route from Gauteng to Malawi, became immobilised a short distance from the Polokwane weigh‑bridge while being redirected to the Provincial Traffic Control Centre (PTCC). During the stop, the driver attempted to flee the scene. He was promptly intercepted, restrained and arrested by officers from the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Limpopo Traffic Officers. The bus will remain at the PTCC until the excess passengers are removed and the prescribed fine is settled. Further investigations are underway.
