A 3 year old girl playing on a Greek beach was blown out to sea by a sudden gale force wind and current. Her parents and lifeguards couldn't catch up with her and called the coast guard, who in turn contacted a nearby ferry. The girl was saved and reunited with her parents.

A Russian man led police in Florida on a dramatic marine chase for over an hour, after stealing a luxury yacht worth $2.5m. The man boarded the 68-foot vessel on Monday afternoon, before attempting the daring escape from the marina. Officers from Martin County ground and marine units were forced to ram the yacht into nearby mangroves in order to ground it. The man refused to surrender when deputies boarded the vessel, and tear gas was used to force him to come out.

On 27 June 2022, a crane was loading a 25 tonnes pressurized chemical storage container, containing chlorine, onto the container ship Forest 6 at the port of Aqaba, Jordan. The cranes' cable system failed. This accident caused thirteen deaths and 265 injuries at the port.

Oct 2015. The new cruiseship Norwegian Escape was being delivered from the Meyer Werft shipyard, Germany, down the River Ems toward the North Sea (sailing backward). She passed a small workboat. The azipod wake of the cruiseship pushed the boat under water There were no injuries

My typical morning as a pilot starts early. I wake up at 03:50 when our pilot coordinator informs me that a car will pick me up at 04:20. Due to a shortage of pilots in Vlissingen, I am given a ride to Vlissingen with a colleague. We arrive at 05:15. My colleague's ship is scheduled to arrive at Vlissingen Roads at 05:30, while mine is set to arrive at 06:00. Normally, if you are already in Vlissingen waiting, you would receive a 20-minute notice to proceed to the pilot boat. The pilot coordinator in Vlissingen tells me that I have to proceed to the "Wulpen" pilot boat. There are usually two Belgian pilot boats and one Dutch pilot boat available. I take a short walk from our pilot station to the "loodsensteiger," or pilot jetty, which is just down the stairs and across the street. When I board the pilot boat, I report to the skipper by providing my name, the ship I am assigned to, and its origin (North or West). I also inform him of the "sein," or signal, which in this case is "2A," indicating a category 2 vessel (under 150 meters in length overall) bound for Antwerp. The "Wulpen" takes me out to the vessel, where I climb on board. My colleague, who is the sea pilot, hands over the details of the ship along with relevant information regarding traffic. Off we go! I docked in Zandvliet Lock at 09:15 and returned home by 10:00. I am available again at 21:00, which today translates to an immediate phone call for another vessel.
