The idea that Christianity was โlostโ until the Reformation is not humility. It is historical amnesia. You do not reform something that does not exist. You break away from it. And the fact that Christianity functioned, evangelized, defined doctrine, and produced saints long before Protestantism ever appeared is not an insult. It is a problem that cannot be explained away.

He called them useful but not Scripture and even questioned parts of Daniel and Esther. The Church did not scramble to add anything back. At Trent it simply reaffirmed what Christians had already been reading since the beginning. Catholics did not change the Bible during the Reformation. The Reformation changed the Bible.
