Its landing gear collapsed, sending the Harrier into a 4,000-foot belly slide as its fuel, weapons and pods caught fire. But the pilot stayed with the burning aircraft. Why? Four aircraft were waiting on the runway. He steered the crippled Harrier away from them before ejecting as flames reached the cockpit. He survived with minor injuries. The Harrier was destroyed. No enemy fire brought it down. This was a landing accident that became a fight to keep a burning aircraft from taking others with it. Watch the final seconds.
