El Niño is born! Destined to be the biggest in 150 years +?? NOAA declares: El Niño Advisory This morning conditions in the Eastern Pacific met the criteria for El Niño. This means Sea Surface Temps reached a certain level above normal, and the ocean and atmosphere “coupled” meaning they are now working in tandem to produce impacts. This event is widely advertised by models to be potentially the strongest on record. El Niño takes very hot water stored in the deep tropical west Pacific, pushing it east and up to the surface, lofting that heat into the atmosphere, which supercharges weather events and throws the climate off-kilter. This typical means more intense heatwaves & floods, but also it restrains the Atlantic hurricane season. So its impacts are both good and bad. One thing seems virtually certain: the heat released into the atmosphere will make for some unprecedented events through 2027, and on top of longterm warming, the hottest global temperatures in many tens of 1000s of years. #ElNino #florida #storm #heatwave #flood #drought

The models are very aggressive and if they are right we may tie or break records set ~100 years ago. These are wind chills for Tuesday morning BUT it is not out of the question that North FL will see actual low temps near freezing next Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Fire up the fireplaces! You don't have one? You have a week to get it :)

That warmth will shove the frigid Polar Vortex south, with multiple cold plunges in the batters box for the next 10-15 days in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. Some rare and remarkable processes are taking place this week, that we are not likely to observe for a long time! These 2 Atlantic hurricanes are closer than any since at least the 1960s. They are now connected - in each other’s orbit, pivoting. Stop 1. Notice the calm area at the pivot point between the two storms caused by sinking air. Stop 2. #Humberto dissipates and #Imelda cannibalizes its moisture and energy, passes over #Bermuda, grows, then heads out to sea. (2 hurricanes can NOT merge both as hurricanes. There’s been a lot of chatter about the cold blue blob in the North Atlantic lately. Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf 🌏 🦣 just published a paper very recently. The cold blob (warming hole) is not new. But perhaps against the backdrop of blazing red El Niño maps, people are noticing it more. That’s good. It’s a big deal, a canary in the coal mine. Here’s a level headed discussion on the latest science on the #AMOC - potential collapse - yes the cold blue blob in the N Atlantic is very likely due to a slowing of that vital circulation which is responsible for 25% of Northward heat transport. That’s a lot. So any major disruption is a major problem. Maybe watch it at like 1.25-1.5X the speed because my pace was a little slow.

In fact, the “median” forecast for December of all of our computer models combined is slightly “above” the biggest event we know of back in 1877. (+2.9 vs +2.7 using ONI) While this peak intensity may or may not occur, all signs are pointing to a Super El Niño - a “natural” oscillation. That will expel stored heat from the deep Tropical Pacific - on top of significant longterm warming - heating Earth to record levels not measured before in late 2026-2027, powering extreme heat waves, droughts, and rain storms… while also suppressing Atlantic hurricane season 1/ #ElNino #extremeweather #science

❄️ By definition this will be a Bomb cyclone, and it now looks to become a paralyzing coastal #blizzard for New England, Long Island, and perhaps coastal New Jersey and New York City. Many will receive over a foot of snow Sunday into Monday. Coastal gusts in SE New England may reach #hurricane force 75mph+. This is the latest Hi-Res GRAF (IBM) available as of 4pm Friday. In my opinion it’s likely too far north and west with the heaviest snow, so take snow totals N/W of NYC with a grain of salt, for now, until we get closer to the storm. Still coastal locations in Long Island and SE New England will likely see 1-2 feet! One more note: I love snow, so for me, no snow is too much despite what the legend says :) ❄️ #snow #storm Tri-State Weather Adam tocksin

This weekend looks brutal across #Florida! As cold as I can remember. A bomb cyclone, with the “potential” for very heavy Southeast Coast #snow, will propel bitterly cold air south into the state. The real possibility exists for wind chills ranging from the single digits north to 20s as far south as Miami on Sunday. Stay tuned!

A super cool phenomenon is happening today, as a strong cold front dives into the Gulf! Called Tehuano Winds - wind is funneled through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec mountain gap in S Mexico - becoming a wind firehose into the Pacific, with gusts 💨 reaching near hurricane force. These winds bring rough seas, upwell nutrients, and sometimes, when they happen early enough in autumn, can help spawn the spin needed to aid hurricane formation. Science!!

The shear size of the area impacted, and more importantly the southern reach, has the potential to cripple communities for days. The setup: extremely cold Artic Air forced south. A vigorous subtropical moisture stream forced north. Where they meet, thick #ice 🧊 in the South, heavy #snow ❄️ on the north side. Ice up to 2” thick? Snow to 18”? It’s all possible, the question is exactly where. Too early for #storm specifics. A note for folks in the Northeast, this movie only goes through Sunday night. More ❄️ possible Monday!

COLD & SNOWY EUROPE! Brutal cold across Northern Europe (20°C below normal now) will overspread most of Europe soon, with cold dropping into the #Mediterranean, #Italy and the #Balkans. Over the next 10 days heavy snow will fall in spots with over 100 CM in parts of the Balkans and 50cm+ over the Alps and central Italian mountain ranges. This is all due to unusually warm air over Greenland, called the Greenland Block.
