Europe is melting! The size, intensity, and longevity of this #heatwave is enormous. Peak temperatures will reach 45°C / 100-115°F this week in #France . You are looking at temperature anomalies in the cloud layer over the next 2 weeks, which peak at +20°C. #Europe is Earth’s fastest warming continent, and European heat extremes are increasing faster than models project they should, likely due to changes in steering flow. In a rapid attribution study by Climameter it is estimated that #climatechange has made this June heatwave up to 4°C hotter (7°F) than it would have otherwise been without warming.

‼️ In house Hi Res Model escalates this weekend. GRAF Indicates #Bertha by early week as the storm drifts west away from Florida into the #Gulf. This model is very good, but I emphasize this is an incredibly tough forecast, and it may be wrong. I find it tends to spin things up too fast, and we are not yet in the GRAF wheelhouse of inside 48 hours. I only post this because it’s 3 days from now and as we go into the weekend I don’t want folks sleeping on this, and I want to be transparent with ya’ll. It’s nothing to be concerned about, just something to be aware off. Right now NHC development chance is at 30%. Otherwise on/ off downpours through the weekend.

It’s unreal to see this El Niño continue to astonish. Take a look at the subsurface heat build up in the last few frames of this. The anomalies are backing up, and heating up, like a traffic jam, in the Central Pacific. There’s a ton more fuel left in this tank! And it seems evident it will end up living up to the hype and seasonal model forecasts. Thanks Alex Boreham for the great visual.

This means Sea Surface Temps reached a certain level above normal, and the ocean and atmosphere “coupled” meaning they are now working in tandem to produce impacts. This event is widely advertised by models to be potentially the strongest on record. El Niño takes very hot water stored in the deep tropical west Pacific, pushing it east and up to the surface, lofting that heat into the atmosphere, which supercharges weather events and throws the climate off-kilter. This typical means more intense heatwaves & floods, but also it restrains the Atlantic hurricane season. So its impacts are both good and bad. Watch as #smoke 💨 from Canadian #fire 🔥 moves away, then backtracks towards Florida. This is due to the famous #Bermuda high and something we call atmospheric wave breaking where pieces of the jet stream break off and then meander. In this case the smoke gets caught up in this process and attempts to get back to the SE US by late week. By then it will be thin, diffuse and barely noticeable but it’s a good lesson that the atmosphere is a fluid and “It’s all connected!”

#Hurricaneerin is hungry. It will feast on hot water up to 88 degrees. After using this heat to power its engine, it will dissipate said heat. Leaving a cool ocean wake in its path, ~10 degrees lower than it found it. The water cools not just due to heat absorption, but also overturning /upwelling, wind and rain.

Wait for it… Since human’s industrialized the Earth has warmed 1.5°C or 2.7°F due to the heat-trapping greenhouse gases released from the burning of fossil fuels, changes in land use, and the feedbacks of both. This may not sound like much, but the living Earth System is just as sensitive to temperature changes as your body. If your body temperature rises 2.7°F, your lethargic. Double that and your life is in danger. That’s where Earth is headed in a few decades if we don’t take collective action to slow it. #climatechange #climateaction #stem #science #Earth

Another El Niño Record! Watch as heat “back ups” at the end. The heat building below the surface, which fuels the strength of El Niño, is higher than it’s ever been measured. This animation shows the heat just below the Tropical Pacific Ocean, moving from the West Pacific Warm Pool where it’s stored, to the East Pacific Surface where El Niño forms. Notice how at the end of the movie there’s a “heat backup” - like a traffic jam. That means there’s a lot more heat waiting under the surface to intensify our current El Niño event. It lends more evidence that this will be the strongest El Niño on record, and may end up reaching the high-end model scenarios. We’re already seeing the impacts: from a quiet Atlantic hurricane season, to an already invigorated subtropical jet stream with heavy rain along the #Gulf Coast, to big heat waves around the Globe. In fact, the “median” forecast for December of all of our computer models combined is slightly “above” the biggest event we know of back in 1877. (+2.9 vs +2.7 using ONI) While this peak intensity may or may not occur, all signs are pointing to a Super El Niño - a “natural” oscillation. We say #snowmageddon as a joke, but if ever there was a time to use it, it’s now!! Watch as the West Coast gets bombarded by at least 5 storms in 15 days, with up to 15 feet of snow in the high Sierra, and that may be an underestimate if the models verify. NWS says 8 feet possible by Wednesday. Incredible! #snow

There’s been a lot of chatter about the cold blue blob in the North Atlantic lately. Prof. Stefan Rahmstorf 🌏 🦣 just published a paper very recently. The cold blob (warming hole) is not new. But perhaps against the backdrop of blazing red El Niño maps, people are noticing it more. That’s good. It’s a big deal, a canary in the coal mine. Here’s a level headed discussion on the latest science on the #AMOC - potential collapse - yes the cold blue blob in the N Atlantic is very likely due to a slowing of that vital circulation which is responsible for 25% of Northward heat transport. That’s a lot. So any major disruption is a major problem. Maybe watch it at like 1.25-1.5X the speed because my pace was a little slow.
