🚨 Elon Musk explained why Tesla cannot yet scale Cybercab deployments despite billions of FSD miles. • New vehicle chassis requires its own driving data • Temporary steering wheels and pedals used for validation • Software must be calibrated to Cybercab dynamics • Generalization across cities is progressing • Once validated, Cybercab numbers can ramp quickly Billions of miles on existing vehicles do not fully transfer to a purpose-built Robotaxi platform.

Elon shared his unfiltered take on hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles, calling them extremely silly and noting that multiple rebuttals have already been published online. He stressed that hydrogen is simply an energy storage mechanism, not a source of energy. You have to produce it first, and if you split water through electrolysis using solar power, the process is extremely inefficient. "If you say took a solar panel and used the energy from the solar panel to just charge a battery pack directly, compared to try to split water, take the hydrogen, dump the oxygen, compress the hydrogen to an extremely high pressure or liquefy it, and then put it in a car and run a fuel cell, it is about half the efficiency." Beyond the numbers, hydrogen brings serious practical headaches. It has very low density, acts as a pernicious molecule that causes metal embrittlement, leaks invisibly as a gas, and burns with an invisible flame once ignited. Elon argued that if you are going to pick an energy storage option, methane or propane would be far easier and more sensible. Even the best-case hydrogen fuel cell does not beat today’s batteries, so the entire approach makes no sense. He wrapped up by saying this will become super obvious in the next few years. "There’s no reason for us to have this debate. I’ve said my piece on this. It will be super obvious as time goes by."
