Yesterday, a huge wildfire ripped through our farm, causing many thousands of dollars' worth of damage. Irrigation pipes, solar panels, silage sausages, and stovers were just destroyed. The first time I really feel like quitting this gutu project. Over 100ha's burnt. Painful. But at least no animals or people died.

Yesterday was a wake up call on the brutality of nature. The wind was lifting flames 30 feet in the air. Most our farm workers were off. We could only fight to save the homestead coz we have thatch. I failed to save the thatching grass we had been cutting for the last 3 months. I failed to save our silage. I failed to save the borehole solars at 2 locations. I failed to save my wife’s irrigation pipes and drip pipes. We had not buried most pipes as we needed to test all connections. It’s devastating that we are NOT insured for fire. Something I’ll correct going forward. But FIRE guards DID NOT work. The wind was just overpowering. We will never be caught like this again. But I now realise that battling forces of nature like fire isn’t a joke. You do your best but it’s in Gods hands. #SurvivingGutu

Our 7 cow moms are now giving us a total of about 15litres of milk per day for human consumption (the rest is drank by calves). We have more than we need as a family and staff. We are tired of eating hodzeko daily and have no more storage. My wife has ordered supplies from SA for us to start making some cheese 🧀 for now will let the calves have their way as we can’t keep accumulating milk.

Our 7 cow moms are now giving us a total of about 15litres of milk per day for human consumption (the rest is drank by calves). We have more than we need as a family and staff. We are tired of eating hodzeko daily and have no more storage. My wife has ordered supplies from SA for us to start making some cheese 🧀 for now will let the calves have their way as we can’t keep accumulating milk.

Holes are more productive and efficient that ploughing land, for water, soil and labour. Feed a family of 6 on 16th of a ha. 🔥🔥 #SurvivingGutu

Whenever I post with machinery I get bombarded by my zim diaspora experts about Health and Safety , PPE and “you should”. Perfection is the enemy of progress. The west was built first, coal, asbestos, drilling , hard labour. The and only then , when they achieved and were prosperous , did they start all this other shit to slow you down. We have to work with what we have comrades. What we don’t have in money, we have in time. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
